You need to go into Preferences and turn off "Show AI video cards" (and it is good to turn off everything else as well.)

I have no idea how regular people are supposed to navigate macOS any more. "Please go to (obscure subsection of settings) and enable (3 different settings in three different places) in order for your scanner software to work."

The MacBookPro disaster is complete, more or less.
The problem: after installing macos 26.0.1 the MBP failed to reboot successfully. It kept going to the apple logo and the progress bar stopped, and eventually the mac went to Recovery Mode.
Tried:
1. re-install macos Tahoe - no luck.
2. reset NVRAM
3. reset SMC
4. re-install from Time Machine backup on NAS. Took 44 hours.

Thunderbird (141.0 on MacOS) now insists on using a "Junk" folder, whether that exists or not. And even if one tries to override that T-bird puts it back to "Junk".

In schools, it's pretty common to use a "locked-down browser" (eg, during tests) on Chromebooks. I was more surprised to hear from my kid that this also exists on MacOS. How does this work? Does it use Lockdown Mode? How is an app able to enable this, instead of the user?

Having not started my personal macOS in about 2 month it now requires trillion gigabytes of updates to be downloaded first ... feels a bit like Windows tbh.

The new MacOS update makes the DVD player (the thing for SuperDrives - surprised they aren't Magic Drives, now that I think about it) janky as hell. This is a well-known issue, according to my perfunctory web searches. Drops to something like 5FPS. Works fine otherwise, but annoying.
Two questions: Does anyone know if this is this likely to be fixed? And if not, and also while we wait, is there a DVD player someone can recommend? VLC needs Rosetta and its UI has always been borderline unusable anyway. Yes, I tried it again, but it switched randomly from German to Spanish and had no navigation menu for the disk itself. I'm looking for something that can read the disk and works like the native DVD player, minus the jank. But maybe the jank is fundamental. That's really what I'm trying to find out.
For now, I'll use a non-updated Mac but I will want to update it at some point. Ironists need not remind me about my recent rant regarding updates.

I've been porting some code from C 17 to C 23. Many nice improvements in the language!
A side note: Clang is so much worse than GCC in almost everything, from compilation times, runtime performance, to C 23 coverage... Staggering!
GCC alone is a good reason to dump MacOS for GNU/Linux (among many others).
