With these recent days of news showing that the Trump regime is on their heels about ICE, my refrain has been: “It’s working. Punch harder.”
Last night I let myself savor the “It’s working” part for a few happy minutes, but this morning I’m squarely focused on “Punch harder.”

I’ve found myself reacting and doing a double-take on some replies to messages that I get from both friends and colleagues. Are they using ”AI” to reply to me (or in group chats)? When the whole world is morphing into an uncanny valley where I no longer know who I’m talking to I really don’t feel safe anymore. I don’t straight out ask because I feel rude doing so, and I also think I’m terrified by the potential of being right.

I share this because it’s important to understand that the impulse to turn to AI seems strongest when a worker is stretched thin, burnt out, sick, or otherwise unable to meet a deadline.
I’ve seen this before, and experienced it myself in 2024 / early 2025 before I quit using LLMs.
I think those of us who are against LLMs and want to reduce society’s dependence on these tools need to contend with that and look for solutions both for individual situations and on a larger scale.

Since I got suspended (zero-tolerance) from Warframe for inappropriate (TransRights) language in region chat, I went ahead and grabbed Stardew Valley on Steam while it was on sale instead. I’ll pick it up on GOG later, don’t worry.

I don't think I'm ever going to enjoy gifts.
I can get why people would give them to children. After all, children don't have their own budget. However, I'm talking about occasional gifts, not a new toy every second week, because "we must outcompete the other grandparents". But to adults?
Once I've heard that you should gift people with what they won't buy themselves. Well, that's won't work for me. I'm a minimalist. If I don't need something, I don't want to have it. Unnecessary junk is only emotional burden to me.
I can get why you'd enjoy something handmade. But something people bought? If I need something, I can buy it myself, when I need it. And I definitely don't need people to prove to me that they never cared to learn who I am, and just buy whatever they like or whatever is "fashionable"; which usually means exactly the opposite of what I'd prefer (i.e. something minimalistic). Or even worse, I don't need people manipulating me through gifts.
Sweets? Besides my diabetes, I don't really enjoy expensive shit that people generally buy because it's what's advertised. For the money they waste on it, I'd buy three times as much sweets I'd actually enjoy.
Gift cards? Oh yes, "you aren't supposed to give money, so let's just give the equivalent of money that's actually worth less than money". Actual money? And here we reach the true nonsense; we exchange the same amount of money, so it's just pointless gesture. Unless one of us gives less money…
What I'd really like, as a gift? Maybe that people would finally bother accepting me as who I am. The absolute minimum of caring that I hate consumerism, and not fueling it "for me".

Like a lot of Europeans, I realise that the US isn't a reliable partner anymore.
I am just talking about myself here, and not my employer, or my family.
I do use a lot of services that are based in the US, and some I will probably not migrate in the near future.
But when I receive a bill, it is a good moment to consider if it is a candidate for migration.

I think it is fair to say that most well-to-do people would not uproot generational homelands and livelihood to take a chance being an unknown in a foreign landscape, even if one has connections there, and yet, this current migration dwarfs the post-WWII flux. Sure, maybe I myself set out on the horizon in search of (mild) adventure, but I find it hard to believe 4% of humanity are crazy like me.
That alone speaks volumes at how successful we are at governing the planet, assuming, of course, that data matters in the least, which, presently, it does not.

I find it useful to remind myself that bloodless bureaucratic language serves not only to reflect some actually existing state of things, but also to create new realities that are anathema to many in terms that seem unassailable. But that's the thing about human-made systems - they have been, can currently, and always will be changed.

“Make the seats adjustable” is a thought I bring to teaching, for example: Does the context I’m creating for learning accommodate people with all different kinds of minds? What variations am I not accommodating? Can I make some things more individually adjustable to better embrace those variations? Can multiple instructors / learning environments / schools offer the flexibility that I can’t offer myself?
Total adjustability is impossible; infinite flexibility is impossible. But as an ongoing effort, as a •direction•, this work is both feasible and useful.

These stories are relentless, and even when we aren’t seeing ICE with our own eyes, we’re carrying the weight of hearing these stories — carrying each other’s burden of witness. The story-sharing is both a part of the weight we carry and a part of the healing we do together.
It’s hard. But I do feel like I repaired something in myself over the weekend, first watching the right-wing hate march get humiliated and then making time with friends.
