To give myself a break tonight, I'm focused on the state of the Federation instead. #StarTrek
Just got these messages from @seengoals@mastodon.social, one of the members of Gaza Verified, basically accusing me of running a fundraiser for Gaza and keeping the proceeds (I have no fundraiser on any fundraising site anywhere) and extorting me to share his fundraiser or he’ll apparently go public with it.
So here’s what’s going to happening instead: Nabil has been removed Gaza Verified (
Any time I can get my Bandcamp wishlist under 60 items I'm like, unreasonably surprised with myself 😂
Perhaps the main difference between myself and vibe coders is that we have completely different backgrounds.
I've learned coding as a kid, with no friends and no Internet. I didn't do it because it was cool; nerdy stuff was the exact opposite of cool and was likely to get you bullied. I didn't do it because it promised good salary; as a 10-year old, I didn't ponder much about my future, let alone salary. I did it because I was bored, and it was something interesting to do.
I didn't do specific exercises, but rather created whatever I've found interesting. I wasn't graded, I had all the time in the world, and I've enjoyed solving problems. Even if I had access to the Internet, I doubt I would start looking for ready solutions and copy-pasting them. My code was always mine, and I was proud of it; at least at the time.
Of course, nowadays I do stuff I don't enjoy as well. But I'm a grown man who takes responsibility for what I do. And even if my code is shit, it is my shit, and 100% eco.

Nerd sniped myself this time: after getting sniped yesterday with showing that for primes `p >= 5` that `24 | p^2 - 1`, I decided to look at primes `p, q` where `p, q >= 5` and see if `24 | p^2 - q^2`.

I had not yet submitted myself to a deep dive into Thiel's theology, but it's way more interesting than I had imagined, and explains why he would call his company Palantir, which has always seemed a baffling choice to me. Apparently he's read One Piece, and imagines himself to be constructing A World Government?!?
Also I feel I understand a lot of things about Silicon Valley better now including lots of stuff about social network harms & corporate goals/policies. Belief in Girard's theory of mimetic desire (which I'd not encountered before) explains so much of SV founders' behavior and also it being at least partially reflective of reality explains both their success and some of their harms.
I still remember the abject horror I felt when some "ConservaMom" on twotter back in the day 'pointed out' to those who wanted free and universal health care that a Ferrari would no more have value if everyone had one.
I don't know what exactly I replied, but it got me an instant block and I'd be ashamed of myself if it hadn't.
It really is a brain worm. But is there any hope for the affected? I think even in my most demented free-market-believer day…
Asking an AI assistant if smashing myself in the face with a hammer is a good idea.
I took a weekend today after pushing myself pretty hard the last 3 and especially yesterday. I now regret that. I slept well, felt fine when I woke up, didn't go do physical labor, and was bored, frustrated, and hungry all day.
People like me don't need breaks, we just need to work until we physically and mentally collapse, then recuperate. High speed, low drag, tailspin, crash, and phoenix.
Sonnet 035 - XXXV
No more be grieved at that which thou hast done:
Roses have thorns, and silver fountains mud:
Clouds and eclipses stain both moon and sun,
And loathsome canker lives in sweetest bud.
All men make faults, and even I in this,
Authorizing thy trespass with compare,
Myself corrupting, salving thy amiss,
Excusing thy sins more than thy sins are;
For to thy sensual fault I bring in sense,
Thy adverse party is thy advocat…
The suicide pod now has a built in AI to check any user's wellbeing to see if they're fit to commit suicide. That has to be the easiest peace of software to ever exist, because if anyone trusts an artificial intelligence with their own life, they're certainly not mentally fit and need help.
On a more serious note: the assisted suicide debate is an important one, where I clearly position myself on the side of it's legalization. However, I could only truly support it with a better health…
Had a dream last night where I offered shelter from some incoming rain in the "cat storage" shed.

This could be long. It's hard to express my thoughts on this.
I had a bit of a heart to heart with my son today. My son is a student at Minneapolis College of Art and Design. He's 26. I'm white, his mother is third generation Mexican-American. To me, my kids are just my kids, I see myself and my ex-wife both in them. But he has been pushing me to realize for some time that isn't how the rest of the people around us see them. They don't see me in them at all, they ju…
Folks, I know there is so much “corrective” action online and pedantry and caustic behavior (especially in the gay community - is it present among lesbians too?) … So, I’m starting to a) keep my pedantry to myself b) but when I DO speak up …

The rule of law has always been flawed and fragile, always been applied with inconsistency and injustice, always applied partially and with partiality —
but I’m still having trouble getting my head around the fact that it is just not even part of our reality here in Minneapolis as these masked kidnappers rove around town.
I keep having to check myself: the question is never, never “What are the rules?” The only relevant question is “What do they think they can get away with today?” That’s it.
The more I zoom into ORMs, the more I’m convinced you need to be a lot smarter to operate them correctly and deterministically than you need to be to write some SQL and map rows on structs/classes.
Case in point, I wrote myself a package to make transaction management explicit and when adding SQLAlchemy ORM support: holy autobegin, Batman!
Add `autobegin=False` to your sessionmaker/Session and watch your app burn.

Collecting the Shards
Over the past few weeks, I have published several new books. From the outside, that can look like some kind of creative superpower. Like I locked myself in a room, drank a heroic amount of coffee, and sprinted through a stack of fresh manuscripts until the world blurred and the covers appeared. That is not what happened.

I was reading up about a drug on the manufacturer's website for a paid project in my other life where I'm not an erotica writer and the text was, I kid you not, AI generated. What's funny is that while I was reading I was thinking to myself that pharmacy companies are so happy to sue each other, it would be daft to use AI generated text. Yet here we are. Sigh.

Moving services to the EU
Like a lot of Europeans, I realise that the US isn't a reliable partner anymore.
I am just talking about myself here, and not my employer, or my family.
I do use a lot of services that are based in the US, and some I will probably not migrate in the near future.
But when I receive a bill, it is a good moment to consider if it is a candidate for migration.

The reason RAM prices went up 4x is that a massive amount of not-yet-manufactured memory was bought with money that doesn't really exist… to be put into GPUs that haven't been made yet… to be installed in data centers that haven't been built… powered by infrastructure that may never exist… to satisfy demand that isn't actually there… in order to generate profits that are mathematically impossible…

Sin of self-love possesseth all mine eye
And all my soul, and all my every part;
And for this sin there is no remedy,
