There’s this place we walk by pretty regularly that’s semi-abandoned. The owner replaces parts when they fall off and there are lights at night, but the front and back have been left to return to nature. This chunk of land is worth ~$2.5M Canadian, so an odd situation. Anyhow, I enjoy watching the progress of the informal small-scale rewilding.

I'm finally trying printing with Spiderflex (77-82A shore) filament. The print speeds remind me of my first 3d printer. Two tiny parts totaling under 3g took about an hour, printing with a maximum speed of 10mm/s. But having really flexible TPE is really handy; there's really no reasonable alternative!
Now I have new feet for my KX3, and honestly they might be better than the originals (sorry Elecraft!) They are at least as grippy on the table surface, and they are a closer fit on the …

Just finished "Far Sector" written by N. K. Jemisin and illustrated by Jamal Campbell. I don't normally go for Marvel/DC comics stuff and this was a good reminder why. Jemisin's authorship was the draw for me here, as well as some curiosity about what I might be missing out on by avoiding the classic comics lineage. I won't go into too much detail about particulars, but suffice to say it ends up feeling to me line a very neoliberal story dressed up in a veneer of radicalism, which is not what I'd expected of Jemisin. Particularly in light of current events, the "good cops" aspects of the storyline ring truly hollow. There's still a lot of neat parts, but I guess I also wound up disappointed by the sci-fi aspects in a lot off ways. I truly think Jemisin is capable of better than this, based on her other (excellent) work.

I’m somewhat annoyed by big parts of the “AI” discourse (“it’s useless” is patently wrong/wishful thinking and “it’s morally wrong” won’t convince anyone) so this banger by Cory Doctorow was godsend:

Back story: In some parts of Vancouver, if you’re putting up a new building (typically condo/retail) you can get tax breaks or more square feet or some such bonus if you preserve the original facade. This place was torn down quite a while ago but the facade, propped up by the metal framework, remains. A policy misfire in this case because it was a really crappy brick frontage and would not be missed.

I live in California.
California was extorted from Mexico by the so-called "Mexican War" or 1846.
