English Alt Text: A black-and-white photo depicts an urban scene with a large semi-circular metal sculpture in the foreground, partially hidden by a hedge. Behind it are modern high-rise buildings with glass facades and Chinese signage. The buildings feature vertical lines and grid patterns, suggesting a commercial or business district. The contrast between the natural hedge and sleek architecture highlights the blend of nature and urban design.

English Alt Text: A black-and-white photo shows the exterior of Schindler German Beer Hall in Beijing. The signage includes both English and Chinese text, with logos for German beer brands like Weihenstephan above the entrance. Below, another sign reads “BEIJING CHINA.” In front of the building, a sculpture of two human figures in motion—possibly dancers—adds an artistic touch. The architecture blends German beer hall aesthetics with local Chinese elements, creating a …

English Alt Text: A black-and-white street scene captures a cyclist in the foreground wearing a helmet and patterned clothing. A white car partially obscures the view. In the background, tall trees line the street, and a person walks on the sidewalk. A large abstract sculpture with looping forms stands near the trees. Two signs are visible: one indicates a parking lot 50 meters ahead, and the other points to a public toilet. The image reflects a typical urban environme…

English Alt Text: An outdoor art installation features dynamic sculptures of children in playful poses, appearing to run or fly with joyful expressions. Each child sculpture is mounted on a separate platform and arranged in a line, creating a sense of motion and interaction. In the foreground, a large abstract metal structure frames the scene. Behind the sculptures are display boards with text and images, likely describing the exhibit. A building with vertical banners …

Why was I today years old when I learned about bio-photovoltaics?
This is a technology which instead of using silicon wafers as the basis for photovoltaic cells, uses a sandwich comprising
1. A transparent window, to allow sunlight in;
2. Algae, to photosynthesise sugars;
3. A membrane to keep the algae separate from the bacteria;
4. Bacteria, which consume sugar and generate electricity;
5. A filter, to allow the biological components to breathe.

Indirect CW for teen pregnancy, rape, death.
Just finished "Girls Like Us" by Randi Pink. Pink has a knack for telling stories that capture the grim but also vibrant nuances of African-American history. I previously read "Under the Heron's Light" which has more elements of magical realism and connects more directly to the history of enslavement; "Girls Like Us" is more historical fiction, with a bridge at the end to contemporary times (circa 2019, when the book was published). It tells the story of a disparate group of mostly-Black teens who are pregnant in 1972, and shows a range of different outcomes as varied as the backstories of the different girls. Rather than just separate vignettes, the girls' stories are women together into a single plot, and Pink is a expert at pulling us in to deeply contemplate all the complexities of these girls' lives, showing rather than telling us truths about the politics of teen pregnancy and abortion, and how even though the choices involved don't have simple answers, taking those choices out of the hands of the people they most intimately affect is cruel and deadly.

Apparently ICE abducted parents and just left their young kids just sitting there alone, unassisted and unattended — in not one but •two• separate incidents in the Twin Cities in the last few days.
In one case, they left school-age kids alone in the house after a pre-dawn raid. In another, they snatched a father driving his kids home and just left the kids there in the car.

Abstract: We present an in-depth analysis on how to build and train neural networks to estimate the spatial distribution of scattered radiation fields for radiation protection dosimetry in medical radiation fields, such as those found in Interventional Radiology and Cardiology. Therefore, we present three different synthetically generated datasets with increasing complexity for training, using a Monte-Carlo Simulation application based on Geant4. On those datasets, we evaluate convolutional and fully connected architectures of neural networks to demonstrate which design decisions work well for reconstructing the fluence and spectra distributions over the spatial domain of such radiation fields. All used datasets as well as our training pipeline are published as open source in separate repositories.

Added 'a few' math tests to picolibc today. These create reference values using nickle with its arbitrary precision floating point arithmetic. The result is a list of functions which need work to improve their accuracy. Most are "close", with known errors of 1 or 2 ulp, but tgamma is in rough shape with errors of 56 ulp for binary64 and 97ulp for binary128. The complex functions are almost all in very rough shape with errors of thousands of ulps.

Der Blick gesellschaftlicher Diskussionen verengt sich immer mehr auf die Technologie. Auf diese Weise wird alles Nicht-Technologische ausgeblendet, was aber fundamental wäre, um selbst das Technologische zu verstehen:

Day 16: Mayra Cuevas & Marie Marquardt
Okay so this is cheating, but they're co-authors of multiple books together, and there's no way for me to separate their contributions... I've already got too many authors I'd like to list, so why not?
I read their book "Does My Body Offend You?" and absolutely loved it; it's a celebration of teen activism while also being a deep exploration of feminist issues through practical situations that bring out the complicated side of things, which the authors refuse to reduce back to a simple formulaic answer. It has a supporting cast of appropriately-complex male characters that help in exploring the nuances of issues like the line between female empowerment & male gratification, and it brings race and macho culture into the conversion as well.
CW for sexual harassment & deep discussion of the resultant trauma.
I'll cheat again here to sneak in mention of two male authors whose work resonates with theirs: Mark Oshiro's "Anger is a Gift" has a more pessimistic/complex take on teen activism along with a gay romance (CW for racist cop murder), while Jeremy Whitley's graphic novel "Navigating With You" deals with queer romance & disability, while having a main character pairing that echoes those from "Does My Body Offend You?" in a lot of ways. Another connection (to non-men authors this time) is with "Go With the Flow" by Lily Williams and Karen Schneemann. Their graphic novel about teen activism and periods is a bit more didactic and has a much lighter tone, but it does necessarily have some overlapping themes.
To bring it back to Cuevas & Marquhardt, their writing is great and their ability to discuss such complex topics with such nuance, all wrapped up in a story that feels completely natural, is amazing to me, and makes their book feel like one of the most valuable to recommend to others.
In writing this I've realized a grave oversight in the list so far that I'll have to correct tomorrow, but I'm quickly running out of days. The didn't-quite-make-it list is going to be full of more excellent authors, and I'm honestly starting to wonder whether it might actually be harder to name 20 male authors I respect now that I've found the sense to be mostly somewhere between disgusted and disappointed with so many of the male authors I enjoyed as a teen.

Over the course of a few dates, he’d make this mistake often, where he’d talk about Trump in the first person. And I came to realise that while I was trying to separate Jared from who he voted for, he may have been personally struggling to do the exact same thing, just in a very different way. It became clear to me that he truly loved Trump not just because he identified with Trump the politician but because he identified with Trump the person being considered ‘bad’ by progressive standards.

The Trump administration has vowed to crack down on what it calls hate speech. It has labeled antifa, a loosely organized anti-fascist group, a terrorist organization.

The funding cliff for the telehealth and home-hospital care programs is separate from shutdown negotiations,
but both programs are caught up waiting for congressional action.
Some providers have been warning patients for months that their appointments may no longer be reimbursed,
while others are remaining hopeful that Congress will come through with a last-minute funding plan.

The Los Angeles Sheriff's department produced the names of about 8,500 deputies

They claimed that producing photographs of the deputies would violate their right to privacy and might endanger them in the future, if they ever go undercover.
But the department’s rationale seemed suspect because it also refused to comply with separate requests for headshots of three deputies who have b…
