It is cold in northern parts of the world. Studded tyres are awesome. If you do not have them, forgot to mount them or cannot afford to invest for your usage, I am here for you.
The number of times I have been caught out and unicycled on snow and ice is quite high. If I can do it, you can do it. Just take it easy! Oh and wear a helmet, even if you do not normally. That kind of a fall is exactly what they are for.

Cycling on regular/unstudded tyres

Riding on ice with normal tyres is entirely possible in much the same way that walking on ice is, so long as you are careful. The key is to avoid sudden movements, such as changes in direction and speed. With that in mind, here is a quick summary of some tips.

Cycle slower: This gives you more time to observe problems and means less harsh braking.
Keep it consistent: Try and keep your speed as consistent as possible. When you do need to stop, slow down very…

My initial thoughts as I read through the Canadian summary:
- While it mentions a political revolution in the U.S., with Trump removing or ignoring controls on his powers, it doesn't talk about how critical their midterms are.
- If the Democrats fail to take control of the House and Senate, then 2027 and beyond will be worse. Trump, senile and aging badly, will be a puppet for the worst elements in the U.S government.
- There's a real possibility that midterms could get canceled outright as Trump seeks absolute power.
- Smaller risks, in terms of impact, are food and health safety.
- The U.S. is removing all restrictions on profit in their food chain. Inspection agencies are being dismantled and legislation eliminated. Yet we continue to import goods from them.
- The anti-vaccine strategy at the very top is leading to surges in COVID, flu, measles and more. How long until that spills over our border.

Irked because my watch showed 7.5 km (not that I was looking at it desperately or anything…) 😉
An afternoon meeting prevented my running in daylight on the greenway, so I headed over to one of the high schools to use their track. (My favorite track at the middle school is still all torn apart for some sort of culvert work. 😤)
One end is all pine trees and the fragrant smell each lap was lovely.
4/1 minute run/walk intervals for 7.46 km in 57:43, average pace of 7:44/km.

An outdoor run summary displaying 613 active calories burned and a distance of 7.46 kilometers.
Looking down the main straightaway at night towards all the pine trees at the far end. Also visible in the far distance are the yellow uprights of an American football goalpost.

No, #Adobe / PickYourPoison, I don't want you to make an "#AI summary" of that book that I'm reading on my tablet. I already told you many times, yet you keep insisting... I wonder if you understand what it means to respect others' decisions.
Given that the word "consent" means jack shit to you, I'll try by rationalizing:
I read because I like to and I want to; and I choose books over short snippets of text because I intend to delve into the nuances and fine details.

Working on improving error reporting in ngscopeclient rather than having filters simply silently produce no output, or log to stdout, when something goes wrong.
Here's my current WIP: the block that has problems displays a warning icon and summary title up top, then you can mouse over it to see more detailed error information.
Thoughts? Anything I should change before I start working on adding this sort of feedback to more filter blocks?

Screenshot of a ngscopeclient filter graph with an eye pattern block displaying an exclamation point icon and the text "missing inputs" above it. A tooltip next to this message reads "No clock input connected".

Grok (Expert) is useful for filtering search engine slop into a summary with relevant, sourced, checkable web links
Neither of these necessarily produce The Truth, but in this example, Grok generates significantly more reliable output when precision matters. As time goes on and the volume of hallucinated nonsense on the Web mounts higher, Grok's ability to attribute its assertions t…

I think the best summary until now about Post-quantum cryptography is from Peter Gutmann in the cryptography mailing-list.

Given that after 20 years and hundreds of millions of dollars spent researchers have yet to demonstrate a single legitimate cryptanalysis result using a quantum physics experiment, it's a bit like arguing over which brand of unicorn repellent is the most cromulent.

The current state of things in terms of pure vs. hybrid systems seems to be:

Fuck off #Adobe #AdobeAcrobat.
Its an API specification overview. _Its ONLY NINE PAGES_.
Also what the crap is a "PDF Space" - keep your space germs away from my PDF.

The title bar of Adobe Acrobat having just opened a nine page document. It "helpfully" suggests

`This appears to be a long document. Save time by reading a summary using AI Assistant.`

And it also prompts me to `Try PDF Spaces`... whatever the hell those are. No thanks.

December newsletter consists almost entirely of last week's end-of-year summary.
There's also December's links and boosts and that bit about the new year's war.
But the great and special people who want it in email have it on their way to their inboxes now and the rest of you who frankly deserve to be arrested and deported like a president can read it here if you want.

Playing around with Antigravity, vibe coded a social media summarizer that makes a summary of the last 48 hours of my bluesky and mastodon timelines, using python, a local database of the posts on my laptop and APIs of mentioned services. Works greats after squashing some bugs and a few iterations. Interestingly you need to know a little bit about coding to use it efficienctly, even in "vibecode" mode.

Highly likely that we're committing to an additional 3 meters (10 ft) of sea level rise as we speak. Yes, it'll take time to fully materialize, but when will the enormous damage that we're signing up for sink in with voters and policy makers?

Good Morning #Canada
If you are a vintage Canadian, you will remember a 1973 commercial comparing the health of a 30-year-old Canadian to a 60-year-old Swede or taking a #BodyBreak with Hal Johnson and Joanne McLeod. The nonprofit organization #ParticipACTION has either motivated you to start an exercise program or caused you to feel guilty about being a couch potato. From 1971 to 2001, ParticipACTION operated independently, with government support, and focused on improving the health of Canadians through physical activity. It disappeared for a few years but was relaunched in 2007 as a nonprofit with guaranteed support from the federal government (funding and administrative).
Every year, they release the ParticipACTION Report Card, and for 2025, the data shows a failing grade in most categories. I acknowledge my contribution, or lack thereof. Despite the well documented positive impact of exercise, we are falling short.

An excellent summary here via @… about how the structures of our civil society have failed to stop ICE from becoming Trump’s Brownshirts.
The one thing the piece omits: someone •is• stopping ICE. It’s the citizens filling the streets, honking and shouting and filming and generally harassing ICE, doing the work our government has failed to do. If it were not for that response being so widespread, sustained, and forceful, we’d be in far worse place right now. mastodon.social/@AnnaAnthro/11

You see a detective on the TV and he’s interviewing all the suspects asking them what they were doing on the night of the murder a month ago last Tuesday night.
And on the TV, the suspects all know. Right away.
If you asked me ten years ago though, I’d have had barely any clue. If you’re lucky it’d have been something planned in my calendar but mostly, dunno. Watching TV maybe? No idea what show. Was that a night I was in the pub?
As we all get older this problem increases I’m told. Eventually full on senility sets in.
But what if you have already built the habit to record what you’re doing? To be able to look back and revise and review how you spent your days? An external aid as a crutch to your own forgetful brain’s cortex?
So I started this Exocortex Log over a decade ago and now I can answer: Ten years ago on Tuesday I was having dinner with the guitarist from my band and his girlfriend and they burned the pudding.
The app has been half finished and barely able to even record let alone review for most of that time, but now it’s ready enough that someone else might use it too if they want.
Try it out: #lifeLog #app #memoryAid
