uspolitics, trump
I keep seeing smart people writing stuff like
> [the US] kept peace through strength balanced with restraint, and wielded influence through culture, values, and diplomacy
I understand that #Trump is terrible and some people feel tempted to idealize what they had before him, but we should be more discerning, or otherwise it becomes impossible to understand how this happened in the first place.
Let's start with some questions:
- peace where? and for who? was it true peace, or "Pax Romana"?
- are we going to take seriously that statement on "restraint"? after all the lies, internal witch hunting, sanctions, coups, wars, invasions, genocides, and last but not least, 2 unnecessary nuclear strikes on Japan?
Now, on "culture, values, and diplomacy". Sure. Why not. Not everything was going to be bad, right?
But the thing is, abusive husbands aren't bad all the time either. From time to time they know how to be sweet and seem to care: one present here, flowers the next day, a little bit of gaslighting, and fake apologies after that "accidental" slap.
Given enough time (if the wife is still alive), at some point the victim decides to leave, and then all hell breaks loose. Trump is the manifestation of that moment. He does not represent a change in #USA's nature, but a hidden side that was "always" there, just waiting to play its role.
Others believe this is because #US citizens have been intentionally dumbed down by a combination of propaganda and a disfunctional education system, and I'm sure it's partly true... But let's see what many of their most brilliant and educated citizens are choosing to do with their lives today: https://sfstandard.com/2025/03/12/stanford-students-want-in-on-the-military-tech-gold-rush/
So, all I'm asking is: please drop the act. It was always a clusterfuck.
Stupidly, today I decided to play around with the DuckDuckGo ai (duck.ai) to see if I could get it to write the code for me to change the resolution of a dataset to the native model resolution.
I *knew* that LLM were bad at math. But I didn’t realize HOW bad.
I asked it to change a 0.25 by 0.25 georeferenced global array to 1 by 1.25 degrees.
Maybe I was naïve in thinking it would ‘know’ that there are 180 degrees of latitude and 360 degrees on longitude.
But I had to do 5 prompts to get that piece corrected. Admittedly, I did not correct it directly— I corrected it as I would a student by prompting that there was an error in a particular line. (And yes- I realize it isn’t human and this is the wrong approach.)
I think I’m done with AI for now. I would have failed a student taking a class with me who didn’t have this most basic of knowledge down the first 5 minutes of class.
I keep thinking that LLM are sewing machines. They do a lot of good in the hands of someone who knows how to make them work, but they are only marginally better than hand-stitching when given to someone like me.
Is there a LLM that can write code in FORTRAN?

Finally, with a hundred thousand dead, two thirds of the buildings bombed, all the hospitals and infrastructure destroyed, more than a million people on the verge of starvation, and Israel's leadership even more openly bragging about their intent to ethnically cleanse the area, it's gone on "too long".
Well done Lammy and Starmer. You finally noticed eh?
So trade deal talks are off, and weapons export licenses are... Well. We'll see. "Always Under Review" they say.
And the main reason for the slight and tiny change in emphasis? Mostly Trump. They are following Trump. They feel easier criticizing Israel's genocide now Trump looks easier with it.

Germany in a nutshell:
There is no law that regulates how old tires on a normal car can be before they have to be replaced. Meaning: You can drive 300km/h on the Autobahn with 12 year old tires as long as they have enough profile.
BUT: If you have a trailer which is licensed to be towed with up to 100km/h you have to change tires every 6 years, else you are only allowed to tow it with 80km/h
To dig slightly deeper here, I think that there's a feedback loop between "fall in love/wait for your perfect match (and by the way girls the only career you should aspire to is the literally unattainable 'princess'" Disney stuff and this "my characters are complex I'm so sophisticated; they suffer but it's not intolerable and their lives are good enough despite the imperfections" crap that gets praised as so evocative of the human condition. In fact, I think it merely evokes the condition of its authors & fans who were poisoned by the Disney in their youth and who have remained bad as relationships ever since, though this is not exactly their fault. In any case, their white middle-aged wisdom-shaped-but-quite bitter and intricately-constructed-so-it's-hard-to-see-the-really-untrue-character-facets work ends up keeping their audience within the "romance is luck" cult by way of reassuring them that a middling romance with lots of doubt and complications is "just life" even though the author doesn't actually have any broader perspective on what life is than anyone else.
This has turned into a bit of a rant, but I think I'll just add that reading Mama by Nikkya Hargrove just before Dream State helped immensely to see how the distant & awkward parent-child relationships of the latter are not a product of human nature but instead of white western culture & capitalism.
(The defeatism about climate change is a whole nother dimension of wrong about Dream State, by that's a separate rant.)

Oddly satisfying to find that the reason our metrics change between one event and another is because one has a hard coded value instead of a real one, and that it's been that way since inception, two years before I started.

Sorry to see the FEMA head fired. He’s right, eliminating FEMA is a terrible idea. Just canceling “non-disaster” funding will harm Americans and not really save money. Each dollar spent in preparedness saves $6-13 in post-disaster recovery, depending on how it is measured. Well, if there were no disasters, we’d save money, but pretending climate change isn’t real won’t help there either. By the way, states already do a ton of disaster preparedness and management—FEMA is the central standardi…

#NewPaper out: Anne Reichmuth , Kühn I, Schmidt A, Doktor D (2025) Forested Natura 2000 sites under climate change: effects of tree species distribution shifts. Web Ecology 25: 59–89.
We have modelled and analysed the effect of possible tree species distribution shift in Norway spruce (Picea abies), European beech (Fagus sylvatica), and two oak species (Quercus petraea and Quercus robur), considered jointly on forested Natura 2000 sites, an EU-wide conservation area network. The modelling procedure was performed using 3 to 4 bio-climatic variables derived from 26 variables of the EURO-CORDEX Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) climate simulations for the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) 2.6, 4.5, and 8.5 until 2098. Our results reveal a severe decline in Picea within Natura 2000 sites in central Europe and lower elevations and confirm a strong shift towards higher elevations and latitudes. This amounts to an 18 % absolute mean change (−18 % mean loss, 15 % mean gain). Quercus sp. reveal similar results, with 23 % absolute mean change (−23 % loss, 24 % gain) at Natura 2000 sites, whereas Fagus remains stable throughout the model results with 8 % absolute mean change (−7 % loss, 9 % gain). As ecosystems of any type are highly dynamic, climate change can lead to additional severe pressure on statically defined conservation goals and associated management activities.

We still make estimates of future climate change today.
