#ReleaseThursday #OpenSourceXmas A little present (to some of you)... Been meaning to release these recent additions before the holidays, but only getting around to it now. The most important new things are these:

Screenshot of a section of the thi.ng/units package readme giving an overview of the new formula DSL provided. The included code examples show how to:

- compute weight in grams of A4 paper with 320 grams per square meter
- compute weight in kg of 1/2 inch thick 200x300mm glass plate
- same as previous but using the `glass` density preset

"The old world is dying,” Antonio Gramsci once wrote.
“And the new world struggles to be born.”
In such interregnums, the Italian Marxist philosopher suggested, “every act, even the smallest,
may acquire decisive weight”.
In 2025, western leaders appeared convinced they – and we – were living through one such transitional period, as the world of international relations established after the second world war crashed to a halt.
During such eras, Gramsci more f…

Why do you follow me? Multiple choice...
(Just saw someone else do such a poll and it reminded me to do the same...)

Unlike his predecessors,
Trump does not even pretend that his imperialism serves any purpose nobler than American domination
For Trump, “America first” didn’t imply any legal or moral opposition to foreign invasions.
To the contrary, he criticized Bush for not seizing Iraq’s oil.
He denounced regime change and nation building because they allegedly expended American blood and treasure on behalf of non-Americans.
Instead, Trump promised short wars in which onl…

10 years and a few days ago, I was running a DIY Synth workshop with STM32F7 dev boards in our kitchen in North London... Still have ~10 of these boards.
Here are also two videos (live performances) of some softsynths (some with MIDI via USB support) which we built in these workshops (I did quite a few of those in that year)...

View of the upper section of Oytal and surrounding majestic mountains, as seen from a narrow hiking path near the ridge, a 1000 meters above the valley. #WinterWonderland arrived early this year...
(From our #EveningWalk in the Ammergau Alps last night... 25-30cm fresh powder everywhere, -7℃, no people, but lots of animal tracks)

A path curving into the distance through a beautiful snowed-in winter forest. A thick layer of fresh powder snow on the ground and tree branches. Cold blue light. This was an interesting problem to work on (back in 2017): A visualization of a path planner for 3D printing (FDM) a single layer/mesh structure of a multi-layer textile. Two setups of the same path strategy which optimized for longest continuous sub-paths and minimum rapids (distance without filament extrusion) between sub-paths. The planner supported six strategies in total, incl. optimizing for straight sub-paths and minimum amounts of "recent" crossings (to allow filament to co…

Animation showing a subdivided quadmesh (consisting of ~320 faces) which is being iteratively highlighted by orange paths navigating the edges of the mesh to show progress of the path planner. Initially the paths are longer, but are becoming shorter as more edges of the mesh have already been visited. Visited edges are then shown as thick gray lines.

Monday night dinner at The Shining...
(Literally... a snowed-in Timberline Lodge in winter of 2018, the drive up there very much like the scene in the movie, 2 meters of snow on either side of the road and a huge snowdrift reaching up to the top of the roof of the lodge...)
#MonochromeMonday

Black and white night-time shot of the entrance area of Timberline Lodge with a huge snowdrift up until the top of the roof (equivalent of 4 floors). The sky is completely black and the scene is only lit by the big flood lights installed.

Reflective pause in Cirque de Troumouse, Pyrenees (just too grand to photograph)...
#FootpathFriday #LandscapePhotography #Photography

A small lake/pond in a high alpine landscape of only grasses and talus fields visible. The shallow water in the lake is very dark and reflecting some of the nearby mountain peaks of the surrounding 270 degree cirque. The framing of the image is such that only the reflection of the peaks and some of the clouds are visible.

Sonnenberg ridge entirely living up to its name...
(Made the most of the last warm weather yesterday afternoon to hike/climb along this beautiful long ridge with many cliffs, roped sections, some cute chamois and hardly any people — temporarily felt like late August, yet in two days supposedly snow starting...)
#SilentSunday

A narrow path along a very narrow ridge of light gray rocks, steep slopes dropping off on either side. The south-facing right side is mostly forested, illuminated by the warm afternoon sun. Blue sky with some streaky clouds.
Steep slopes with yellow brown dried grasses leading down into the valley between some cliffs of light gray rocks and forest. Everything bathed in warm golden light. The valley floor is visible with dense forest, a section of the Linder river and tall mountains rising up on the other side of the valley. Hazy sky.
The silhouette of a standalone rock needle and some nearby trees along the ridge. The sun and some mountains are partially visible from behind the rock. Beautiful red/brown grasses.
(Almost) white, vertical cliffs seen through the forest, illuminated by the late afternoon sun. A small section of blue sky above.

"What is an ocean but a multitude of drops." — David Mitchell
Final tweaks (version 11 by now) of the tone curve for digital negatives for my current combination of emulsion & developer: It's pretty impressive how even minute changes to black & white points of the curve have quite noticeable impact on the rest. I've also been experimenting with reducing emulsion from 8 8 1 drops to 7 7 1 drops, but that makes that 1 drop of contrast agent ~13% stronger (too st…

View of a small tunnel entrance (2-3 meters wide) into a glacially eroded colorful rock face consisting of slightly curved strata of different minerals and colors ranging from blueish-green grays to rusty orange.
