Not quite Canadian Shield, but close... and at much higher elevation (~2300m)
(Another impression from the same region from yesterday's pictures, see description there...)
#MountainMonday #LandscapePhotography

A tundra-like scene of (a section of) some enormous sloped boulders, smoothed and scraped off by thousands of years of glacial movement, now slowly overgrown by beautiful dry, orange grasses and small trees (larches), which are also slowly taking on their autumn colors. The rocks have a pinkish brown color with yellow/green lichens growing in some regions. The background is a uniform green-gray color, i.e. the color of the glacier lake with its milky water and some very, very faint reflections.

Abstract Landscapes
(Bernina range, on the approach to Lago di Fellaria, Sep 2025)
Everything about this place is so special: the road to the trailhead (with 1700m elevation gain), the scale of the majestic ~4000er (meters) mountains with their glaciated peaks. Observing the different levels/layers of this upper valley where the glaciers have already mostly receded, the parts which have been flooded with a reservoir (slowly drying out), the equally spectacular & tragic waterfa…

The bottom half of the image has a completely different character and colors and shows the lower part of the former glacier which had been a reservoir for the…

Multi-layered mountain landscape, in terms of distance, elevation and light. A mountain hut (Hanauer Hütte) is standing on the precipice of a large rock wall, the cables of its supply cable car leading up to it from the valley. Behind it, the ridge line of Schneekarlespitze and the north face of Dremelspitze in the haze. Most of the lower valley parts are already in deep shade from the surrounding peaks. Only a band of yellow/orange larches standing in the penumbra are still catching the beauti…

Published another couple of new versions of thi.ng/genart-api, mainly involving updates to the Layer (layer.com) platform adapter, adding config options and minor quality of life improvements (e.g. handling of private [aka artist-only] params)
I also updated the readme, clarifying the current versionin…

(Ammergauer Alps, November 2024)
#FootpathFriday #LandscapePhotography #Alps

First person video, walking on a narrow path along a ridge, looking down very steep slopes on either side, covered in dried grass and forests, rocky cliffs. Views as far as the eye can see. Late afternoon sun with beautiful warm light. Serene clear sky.

Ever so fitting for our trying times, and a growing conflict for quite a few people (incl. myself), I imagine...
"Absurdism is the philosophical theory that the universe is irrational and meaningless. It states that trying to find meaning leads people into conflict with a seemingly meaningless world. This conflict can be between rational humanity and an irrational universe, between intention and outcome, or between subjective assessment and objective worth..."

TIL you can use `ffprobe` to get the GPS location of an iPhone video like so:
```
ffprobe -i input.mov -print_format json -show_format -v quiet
```
The resulting JSON output contains a key `com.apple.quicktime.location.ISO6709` with the concatenated latitude, longitude, altitude, like so:` 46.6240 012.0345 1866.934/`
There's also a `com.apple.quicktime.location.accuracy.horizontal` key with the lat/lon precision in meters...

After almost a week of refactoring and experimenting with several different approaches, I've updated my Zig nD SIMD vector library to be compatible with the latest Zig 0.15.1, and at the same time cleaned up some internals.
The solution I settled on is a mix of techniques proposed by others, and was needed due to the removal of the struct/namespace-merging syntax in the new Zig version, which this library heavily relies on. I don't like that the new source code is now more than…

Monday night dinner at The Shining...
(Literally... a snowed-in Timberline Lodge in winter of 2018, the drive up there very much like the scene in the movie, 2 meters of snow on either side of the road and a huge snowdrift reaching up to the top of the roof of the lodge...)
#MonochromeMonday

Black and white night-time shot of the entrance area of Timberline Lodge with a huge snowdrift up until the top of the roof (equivalent of 4 floors). The sky is completely black and the scene is only lit by the big flood lights installed.

Belated #MountainMonday ... Ever been in a place which made you feel you're maybe walking in dream (and it's not a nightmare)? This picture absolutely summarizes why I love the mountains the most in October...
(Had to de-saturate the colors because of polarization filter used, otherwise only slightly cropped and minutely raised shadows)

A wide and stunning mountain landscape with a small path leading through a dense colorful low-growth alpine vegetation (heather, bushes, blueberries, mosses) in different shades of browns, oranges, greens & reds. Gray rocks interspersed on the mountain slope which is leading down into a narrow canyon on the left-hand side. Large mountain peaks with a dusting of snow in the background. Pale blue sky with streaky clouds.

High contrast black and white photo of a narrow path along the edge of a rocky cliff falling off vertically less than a meter away on the right. Steep slopes with dwarf mountain pines on the left handside, some of the trees in the foreground catching the evening sun. How many more memorials to remember and warn of the horrors of war? Lessons learned, when? Ever? The same patterns repeating, over and over...
(This memorial is to remember the Italo/Austrian "White War", part of the WW1 frontline in the Dolomites at 2300m...)
#SilentSunday #LandscapePhotography

An obelisk war memorial standing on the precipice of a small grassy plateau in a high alpine setting, a deep valley immediately behind it and layers of craggy mountain ridges behind. It's close to sunset and only some of the peaks are illuminated by the sun. Layers of cloud/fog forming.

Sonnenberg ridge entirely living up to its name...
(Made the most of the last warm weather yesterday afternoon to hike/climb along this beautiful long ridge with many cliffs, roped sections, some cute chamois and hardly any people — temporarily felt like late August, yet in two days supposedly snow starting...)
#SilentSunday

A narrow path along a very narrow ridge of light gray rocks, steep slopes dropping off on either side. The south-facing right side is mostly forested, illuminated by the warm afternoon sun. Blue sky with some streaky clouds.
Steep slopes with yellow brown dried grasses leading down into the valley between some cliffs of light gray rocks and forest. Everything bathed in warm golden light. The valley floor is visible with dense forest, a section of the Linder river and tall mountains rising up on the other side of the valley. Hazy sky.
The silhouette of a standalone rock needle and some nearby trees along the ridge. The sun and some mountains are partially visible from behind the rock. Beautiful red/brown grasses.
(Almost) white, vertical cliffs seen through the forest, illuminated by the late afternoon sun. A small section of blue sky above.

#SilentSunday #LandscapePhotography #Photography

View of a small tunnel entrance (2-3 meters wide) into a glacially eroded colorful rock face consisting of slightly curved strata of different minerals and colors ranging from blueish-green grays to rusty orange. The higher up sections show signs of glacial plucking and trigger the imagination how that place must have looked filled with ice... A tall mountain peak in the far back. Clear, deep blue sky.
