Reflective pause in Cirque de Troumouse, Pyrenees (just too grand to photograph)...
#FootpathFriday #LandscapePhotography #Photography

A small lake/pond in a high alpine landscape of only grasses and talus fields visible. The shallow water in the lake is very dark and reflecting some of the nearby mountain peaks of the surrounding 270 degree cirque. The framing of the image is such that only the reflection of the peaks and some of the clouds are visible.

Been in-depth studying the PDF file format spec for the past few days... it's mind boggling that this format with its capacity for monstrous complexity managed to become the de-facto standard for modern documents. So many questionable decisions & undue flexibility in there (in the wrong places) making even a simple task of reliable metadata extraction (for example) incredibly hard... I understand and value flexibility, but not at this cost! Guess I will have to keep on using one of t…

I read up about the history of the German/Austrian Alpenverein[1] and its former widespread antisemitism and exclusion of women, starting from very early on (from the mid/late 1800s). Several of its regional sections were explicitly founded for "christian baptized, aryan citiizens" only. Already in the early 1920s, 90% of the club's sections voluntarily adopted the so called Aryan paragraph[2] in their bylaws, jews were expelled and not even allowed to enter some of the mountai…

The Hochjoch Hospiz at the end of the Rofental, near the former confluence of three (formerly) major glaciers in the central Alps: Hintereisferner, Kesselwandferner and Hochjochferner. These days all of these glaciers are s…

Favorite landscape and time of year.
(Upper glacial valleys are often so colorful and especially in autumn, when the colors of the many different types of rocks are complemented by those of the tundra vegetation up there... it's a harsh climate/environment, at the same time so peaceful/friendly [if the weather is right] — a feast for the eyes and good for the soul... yet, each time also a bittersweet experience, seeing how fast glaciers are disappearing)

View of a high alpine, rocky tundra landscape with low growth vegetation, some isolated larch trees and large sections of colorful red bedrock exposed. Large mountains in the background on the other side of the valley, their dry grassy slopes basking in the golden afternoon sun (unlike the foreground which is already in semi-shade). Clear blue sky with some small clouds.

Tags are sets. Many apps support tagging of content, but most of them (incl. Mastodon) treat tags only as singular/isolated topic filters, akin to a flat folder-based approach. But tagging can be so, so much more powerful when treating tags as sets and offering users the possibility to combine and query tagged content as sets (think Venn diagrams), i.e. allowing tags to be combined using AND/OR/NOT aka intersection/union/difference operations...
Below is a simple query engine to do jus…

Piz Cambrena (3607m) and its glacier viewed from Bernina Pass at sunset, two weeks ago... A sliver of Lago Bianco in the foreground.

Photo of a glaciated mountain massif (Piz Cambrena) in a vast high alpine landscape. The two main branches of its glacier have largely retracted and only the higher up parts are now just feeding several waterfalls flowing through the exposed bedrock further below. Steep bare rock slopes, giving way to rolling meadows of brown dried grass near the pass. A sliver of the large mountain lake at the foot of the mountain is visible at the bottom of the image with a path leading around the lake. Pink/…

The Big Short Guy Just Bet $1 Billion That the AI Bubble Pops
"According to the Securities and Exchange Commission filings, his fund, Scion Asset Management, bought $187.6 million in puts on Nvidia and $912 million in puts on Palantir, as CNN reports.
Burry similarly made a long-term $1 billion bet from 2005 onwards against the US mortgage market, anticipating its collapse. His fund rose a whopping 489 percent when the market did subsequently fall apart in 2008."

(Another impression from the same region from yesterday's pictures, see description there...)
#MountainMonday #LandscapePhotography

A tundra-like scene of (a section of) some enormous sloped boulders, smoothed and scraped off by thousands of years of glacial movement, now slowly overgrown by beautiful dry, orange grasses and small trees (larches), which are also slowly taking on their autumn colors. The rocks have a pinkish brown color with yellow/green lichens growing in some regions. The background is a uniform green-gray color, i.e. the color of the glacier lake with its milky water and some very, very faint reflections.

No Fishing on this morning walk...
(From a beautiful and positively frozen Sunday AM in late 2022... I shared those images already back then, but hey...)
#SilentSunday #LandscapePhotography

A small narrow pier fully covered in snow, in a completely frozen over lake in the woods. Snow covered branches reaching in from all sides, providing a nice framing. The cold bright light perfectly matches the peaceful frozen mood of this calm morning.
The golden glow of the early morning sun is breaking through the bare trees on a hill slope in a wintry beech forest. A dense patch of young trees, still with their dry rusty leaves on. They're almost fully snow covered near the ground, the sun just partially reaching them. Vanilla sky.

A small path is leading through lush golden yellow/brown grassy slopes in an otherwise empty looking landscape towards an old 4-floor mountain hut at the horizon, the Hochjoch Hospiz (built 1927). Behind the hut a section of another larger mountain is visible. Semi-overcast pale blue sky.

A path curving into the distance through a beautiful snowed-in winter forest. A thick layer of fresh powder snow on the ground and tree branches. Cold blue light.
