The kettle sits outdoors, possibly on a wooden surface, and reflects light off its smooth surface. In the background, a concrete or stone structure adds to the impression of abandonment or neglect. Spotted a newly cleaned-up area across the street from the northeast tip of Bernal Heights Park, with some little plants like this coyote brush (Baccharis pilularis). It's nice to see this kind of stewardship and especially the use of SF native plants

A small shrub with spiny green leaves grows in a vertical form, perhaps 2-3 feet high, in a roadside garden era mulched with twigs and thin wood chips, alongside a few other small plants and a stone. A metal guardrail runs across the back of the space, and in the corner is a larger, more mature shrub with tall pinkish-orange flowers (that I don't think is native).

It's not "better" for BART to have been more dependent on fares for its revenue than other systems; that's why fares are sky-high, often more than the marginal cost of driving, and why it lacked resilience during a pandemic. Otherwise, many good points here.

Tak's hands locked. "I haven't seen her. Madame B. might know where she is." And unlocked. "Hey, I saw the big advertisement in the Times, all over page three. Congratulations." Tak frowned. "By the way, what did you do at the coming of the great white light? Orange, I guess it was, really. You got any opinions to pass the time with while we wait to see if there's going to be a tomorrow?"

Videos Contradict the Federal Account of the Killing
An I.C.U. nurse shot by federal agents was an American citizen with no criminal record, the city police chief said.
Federal authorities said the slain man, #Alex #Pretti, had approached agents with a gun.
But videos show…

“Alex was a kindhearted soul
who cared deeply for his family and friends
and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital.”
“Alex wanted to make a difference in this world.
Unfortunately, he will not be with us to see his impact.”
“I do not throw around the ‘hero’ term lightly.
However his last thought and act was to protect a woman.

An oil refinery fire near the Texas coast was put out Tuesday and a shelter-in-place order was lifted,
hours after a large explosion at the complex shot plumes of smoke into the air, officials said.
No one was injured in Monday’s explosion at the Valero refinery in Port Arthur,
about 90 miles (145 kilometers) east of Houston, Mayor Charlotte M. Moses said. She had urged residents in parts of the west side of the city to stay put.

A tall outdoor staircase runs alongside gardens up a steep hill. There's a house at the top, indicating this is in a residential neighborhood. The steps are concrete edged with strips of metal, and metal handrails run along the sides.

Interesting: Minneapolis is actually converting downtown offices to residential, not just using it as an excuse to cut taxes while not converting any, like San Francisco.
Sounds like a bad deal for the public, though. The new units are expensive, up to $4,695 for 1415ft², and to get them the city is waiving all affordability requirements, and MN is considering subsidizing through tax credits as well.

So SF public school teachers had to go on strike and it was considered a historic win when their strike resulted in 5% raises, but SF cops just waltz in and get a 14% raise by default.
The cops are robbing our city blind. Stop voting for pro-cop "moderates" who enable this!

"The forest gardens were filled with plants that benefited humans, but they also continue to provide food for birds, bears, and insect pollinators, even after 150 years of neglect."
Notice how this debunks mainstream conservationism's dichotomy between "wild" land conserved for the environment's sake, and land developed for human use. Here, human activity improved the land's use both for humans AND the wider web of life we're part of.

the anti-car movement in SF doesn't really think long-term and it shows. anything that doesn't seem politically possible right now in the short term, we just shrug off as impossible and ignore. what would it take to change this?

I'm noticing people treating this as mere dysfunction, but it's not. City Hall is keeping most of the commissions intact because the whole purpose of “commission reform” was to justify an executive power grab, not because anyone seriously thought having too many commissions was a major issue.
And the executive power grab is still happening. 1/

SF politics is supposed to be a knife fight in a phone booth, but I don't see that energy from transit/safe-streets orgs that should be calling out Daniel Lurie on his carbrain. They're all trying to suck up to him for access instead. Seems like a recipe for failure. #sfpol
