I wonder if the bike movement in SF should pivot to bike lockers on residential streets.
"I don't bike in the city because I have no place to store a bike in my apartment building" is almost as common a story as "...because I'm scared of traffic." Maybe we would get less resistance pushing there at this moment. #sfpol

For any of my comrades who are using SNAP, I wish I had something better to say than "if you crush 4 buckeyes with a hammer and tie the pulp in a sock you can wash a good sized load of laundry." English Ivy also has saponins, but I've never been able to make soap from it myself.
Ivy is everywhere. Buckeyes (Horse Chestnuts) are common in city parks (there are a ton in Seattle).
Yucca is also a good source of saponins, but it also has silica. That makes it a good scrubby soap. You can find these plants all over they're pretty common to find in yards.
If you can find acorns still (it's a bit late, but who knows), acorn grits are great and something you can survive on for a bit. Acorns need processing (it's easy to look up, but feel free to ask or check out one or Black Forager's videos on it).
If you've been following me for a bit, you probably already know all this. But if you don't, I hope it helps.
Any other forager folks are welcome to drop hints here that might be useful to folks in the city.

Reviewing my sample ballot for Concord's municipal elections Tuesday; my recommendations:
- Mayor: I like both Byron and Kate West. Vote your conscience.
- Councilor-at-large: Fisto is my first choice, then either Amanda Grady Sexton or Fred Keach. Definitely not Robert Washburn, though.
- Ward 6 Councilor: Vote Aislinn Kalob!
- School Board: Vote Cara Meeker!
- Sale of Eastman: Kinda wish we could know who it'd be sold to first, but sure, why not
- Social districts: Sure, although I'll want to follow this up by attending the city council meetings where they work out the details, and make sure they limit them to individual fully-pedestrianized city blocks (e.g. Bicentennial Square, Eagle Square)
- Keno: It is currently prohibited. It is necessary to vote YES on this question to continue to prohibit it (because otherwise new state law would require it to be allowed by-right), so I say yes, do that, vote to prohibit it.

Many of us are in @… and @… ’s situation here: plastics are collected for recycling, but few/none enter the recycling stream. In that situation:
- Robin’s response is the first and best one: use less.
- In addition, I’d advocate for (1) continuing to recycle what you can’t avoid using and (2) give that city gov endless headaches about their failure to recycle. Show there’s demand for recyclability, get whatever tiny fraction does get recycled out of the waste stream, •and• make headaches for people in positions of power for plastic failing to live up to that demand.
I would •not• just stop recycling. Don’t just give up. My 2¢.

Finished "All the Sinners Bleed" by S.A. Cosby. Titus Crown, the first black sheriff of a rural VA county, is hunting down a serial killer amidst simmering racial tensions.
While Charon County is fictional, the given geography might make it Surry or Charles City counties, places I've spent a good amount of time working with sheriff's offices. Cosby nails the law enforcement vibe & mirrors my observations of race relations in SE VA.

This is the best critique of SF's Family Zoning Plan I've seen, from Fernando Martí, who knows his stuff.
“Zoning is not the primary constraint to construction today — not in SF where it costs $800,000 or more to build a unit of housing. Nor is environmental review or planning approvals. If these were the constraints to production, then we wouldn’t have tens of thousands of already approved market-rate units unable to get construction financing”

I couldn't agree more with this essay from Quintin Mecke, director of CCHO, a group of community affordable housing non-profits. When SF "moderate" politicians underfund housing, it's not something they're forced to do. It's not fiscal responsibility. It's a political choice and a disastrous one.

I've decided to take a year-long break from living according to my most cherished values. In 2026, I'll just do whatever and disregard any difference between good and bad things. But don't worry, I plan to return to having a moral compass on January 1, 2027.

I subscribed to Jacobin when they had some deal, but I don't actually read it. Classic champagne socialist behavior. Leftists will be like, "Win an election? That pales in comparison to my idea, subscribing to Jacobin" and then not read Jacobin

A GenX white woman complained to her visitor from France that this building and park were gentrification, and the area “used to be fields.” The French guy actually corrected her: he remembered it was a parking lot on his last visit. The building is also 100% affordable.

In which SFMTA staff "recommend" (but they're not letting the board vote, they're just going to do it) expanding Waymo, Uber, and Lyft onto what was supposed to be car-free Market 24/7.

I’m helping put together a campaign for municipal #socialHousing here in San Francisco. If you’re already familiar with social housing, how would you define it? If you’re newer to the idea, what’s a question you have about social housing, or something you hope it can achieve?

Haymarket Books has ebooks on sale for $2 until Nov. 7. Some of my favorite books published by them are:
Abolish Rent: on the potential of tenant organizing
Let This Radicalize You: a guide to activism over the long haul
No Cop City, No Cop World: lessons from Atlanta's Cop City fight
Perfect Victims: unpacks anti-Palestinian narratives you may not realize you've internalized

This car was reportedly going 80 to 100 mph. That shouldn't be possible on a (sub)urban street. Every other commonly used consumer product has basic safeguards: you can't accidentally set your toaster to 2,000°F. Speed limiters in all cars now!

Under the Trump regime, if anything can go wrong in this country, it will. When Democrats regain power, they must immediately repeal Murphy's law.
