"The average modern person, by one calculation, spends more than 1,600 hours a year to pay for their cars, their insurance, fuel and repairs. We go to jobs partly to pay for the cars, and we need the cars mostly to get to jobs. We spend four of our sixteen waking hours on the road or gathering the resources for the car."

Nice to present our paper in progress at 'Education Policy in India: contexts, texts, and institutions', conference at the Indira Mahindra School of Education, India.
We ask: Who goes to 'better quality' government and private schools in Delhi? Who accesses free private school seats? Who knows about them?
We find income and caste criteria, used to implement access, aren't enough. Using multi-dimensional deprivation indicators we find a hidden group.

Uncovering the ‘hidden class’: What can a multi-dimensional view of deprivation tell us about access to education in Delhi?

This image captures a serene winter landscape, dominated by a gently flowing river that meanders through a tranquil forest setting. The trees, heavily laden with snow, stand as silent sentinels along the riverbanks, adding a sense of peaceful solitude to the scene. The entire tableau is shrouded in a soft, ethereal fog, which lends an almost mystical quality to the landscape. The photograph is presented in black and white, which emphasizes the stark contrasts between the snow-covered areas and …

A frequent topic in #quantifiedself is how wearables tend to be black boxes – and how it’s hard to understand how a hidden change of algorithm can influence how the same raw sensor signal means differently processed data over time.
Turns out Apple Health records the algorithm version that processes “surface temperature” data from an Apple Watch into “skin temperature”. Unfortunately it’s limited to this one variable as far as I can see. Would love this to be the default for all data!

ALMA, as part of the Event Horizon Telescope, is unveiling a new image of our Milky Way's supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A*, in which strong magnetic fields can be seen…
The most exciting part is that this hints to a jet that would be hidden from our vantage point in our galaxy… but imagine that! We might be like M87, just at a smaller scale!

Event Horizon Telescope image of Sag A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy.

The background is mostly black, but a kind of hairy, slightly squashed donut shape in orange can be seen. The central blackness is the shadow of the Sag A*.

The hairy aspect comes from visualising the strength of the magnetic field.
Messier object 87 by Hubble space telescope.
This is the galactic core shown as a composite image of visible and infrared observations in order to resolve the blue jet.
The field of view is about 1.5 arc minutes across, the jet extends to about a third of an arc minute (or 20 arc seconds) with a width of about 2 arc seconds (absolute length 5 kly at a distance of 53 Mly).
