Rereading Jane Guyer's "Marginal Gains: Monetary Transactions in Atlantic Africa" for class next week. When I first read it, I could feel the scales falling from my eyes. Guyer does a brilliant job digging into actual money use, showing how economic theory is imperialist and the ways in which it can prevent understanding on-the-ground practices that, when considered differently, make all kinds of sense. I cannot overstate how much I love this book.
