I was in My local hardware store yesterday and saw that they had pallets of salt piled high. Just as spring is on the brink of pushing another winter from our memory, the salt mines have apparently turned the corner on earlier supply chain issues. Upon returning home my curiosity, and a lack of having anything important to do in #Retirement, prompted me to look at sources of road salt. I kinda knew it was mined in Ontario, because of Windsor Salt in (checks notes) Windsor. But I was surprised that Canada was a salt powerhouse in terms of production, and that the largest salt mine in the world is in Goderich, Ontario. More accurately, over 540 metres below the prettiest town in Ontario and extending 3.7km under Lake Huron.

Went to the new Capital Brewing Lager House in the new East Trading Hall (which I think used to be Anzac Park East). I had the steak frites, which was pretty good with a nice smokey flavour and tarragon butter. The only slight let-down was the packet gravy (which just tastes of salt, MSG, corn starch and Parisian brown) - but the steak's good with the butter and you can drown your chips in the gravy. Their house lager's pretty acceptable too. The building is still a little incomplete…

Today was one of the rare occasions when I bought gas (petrol) for my plugin hybrid car. I went to the local Shell station to use its car wash as a great deal of salt is being put on the road recently and I wanted to protect the car, if I could.

As a belated public service announcement, here is some fairly bland reporting on snow removal tools. If you live in Toronto, where 50 cm of the white just fell, all shovels and snow blowers will be sold out in every store by 8:42 am. Pro tip - salt doesn't work on 2 feet of snow. Here in Belle Ewart, where we received 20ish cm from #MotherNature, I will be using 2 regular shovels, one with an ergonomic sexy curve, and my handy single stage battery blower. The electric blower struggles with the chunky heavy stuff the evil plow operator dumps at the end of my driveway but so far it hasn't been defeated. Remember to lift with your legs, which I've never seen anyone do.
