I've been thinking about getting a new action camera since my 14 year old GoPro died. I know people love the Insta360 cams but I'm not a fan of proprietary file formats.
I'm still pissed at GoPro for hardware that stopped working, but I do have a ton of GoPro mounts already and they just use MP4 for their video files.
The Insta360 can shoot in non-360 mode, though I don't know if that still uses the proprietary format.
I guess I gotta go read some reviews.

Good Morning #Canada
Last week I registered with Ontario's Healthcare Connect program to help us get a family doctor in the Barrie area. Our previous family doctor retired in November and we were still covered by the clinic but it's in Brampton, more than 90 minutes away. So I'm now relying on Dougie to keep his promise to find a family doctor for all Ontarians by June 2026. I mean he's done so well with housing, environmental goals, Eglinton Crosstown....
Did you know that 83% of Canadians now report they have regular access to a family doctor which means an approximate 500K improvement in the past two years. That still leaves about 6M of us without a family physician. Family physician shortages are the highest in the territories (>55%), Quebec (21.5%) and British Columbia (17.7%), and the provinces of Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia have the fewest family physicians per 100 000 persons in the population.

I love what Tauri has done, a lightweight version of Electron, where you author the backend code in Rust.
But while I love Rust, I do not love it for app building, and I wanted to have that HTML-model for programming but available in Swift.
I used assorted AI tools to port Tauri to Swift (it still reuses the big chunks of code from Tauri), but now you can write HTML desktop apps in Swift:

Although the growth rate (%) of global CO2 emissions has gone down, the increase in absolute terms is still pretty much a straight line:
On average, we're increasing the amount of CO2 that we dump in the atmosphere by around 450 million tonnes every year. Making the climate crisis worse faster.

The Britannica is better written. It flows well. It is approachable. It proceeds from broad overview to coherent detail in a way that helps meet the reader where they’re at. The professional editorial oversight shows.

The LLMs are useful for some tasks, I'm currently tidying up, proof reading and editing a document written by many international co-authors.
The LLM I'm using can very quickly correct grammar and spelling mistakes and produces much easier to understand text from occasionally tortured paragraphs. It still needs an experts eye (mine!) to check no mistakes have been introduced or complexities over-simplified.
This is actually the first time I've used an LLM for this task. It's making it much faster and less painful.
It also explains a lot about academic publishing lately..

Day 30: Elizabeth Moon
This last spot (somehow 32 days after my last post, but oh well) was a tough decision, but Moon brings us full circle back to fantasy/sci-fi, and also back to books I enjoyed as a teenager. Her politics don't really match up to Le Guin or Jemisin, but her military experience make for books that are much more interesting than standard fantasy fare in terms of their battles & outcomes (something "A Song of Ice and Fire" achieved by cribbing from history but couldn't extrapolate nearly as well). I liked (and still mostly like) her (unironically) strong female protagonists, even if her (especially more recent) forays into "good king" territory leave something to be desired. Still, in Paksenarion the way we get to see the world from a foot-soldier's perspective before transitioning into something more is pretty special and very rare in fantasy (I love the elven ruins scene as Paks travels over the mountains as an inflection point). Battles are won or lost on tactics, shifting politics, and logistics moreso than some epic magical gimmick, which is a wonderful departure from the fantasy norm.
Her work does come with a content warning for rape, although she addresses it with more nuance and respect than any male SF/F author of her generation. Ex-evangelicals might also find her stuff hard to read, as while she's against conservative Christianity, she's very much still a Christian and that makes its way into her writing. Even if her (not bad but not radical enough) politics lead her writing into less-satisfying places at times, part of my respect for her comes from following her on Twitter for a while, where she was a pretty decent human being...
Overall, Paksenarrion is my favorite of her works, although I've enjoyed some of her sci-fi too and read the follow-up series. While it inherits some of Tolkien's baggage, Moon's ability to deeply humanize her hero and depict a believable balance between magic being real but not the answer to all problems is great.
I've reached 30 at this point, and while I've got more authors on my shortlist, I think I'll end things out tomorrow with a dump of also-rans rather than continuing to write up one per day. I may even include a man or two in that group (probably with at least non-{white cishet} perspective). Honestly, doing this challenge I first thought that sexism might have made it difficult, but here at the end I'm realizing that ironically, the misogyny that holds non-man authors to a higher standard means that (given plenty have still made it through) it's hard to think of male authors who compare with this group.
Looking back on the mostly-male authors of SF/F in my teenage years, for example, I'm now struggling to think of a single one whose work I'd recommend to my kids (having cheated and checked one of my old lists, Pratchett, Jaques, and Asimov qualify but they're outnumbered by those I'm now actively ashamed to admit I enjoyed). If I were given a choice between reading only non-men or non-woman authors for the rest of my life (yes I'm giving myself enby authors as a freebie; they're generally great) I'd very easily choose non-men. I think the only place where (to my knowledge) not enough non-men authors have been allowed through to outshine the fields of male mediocrity yet is in videogames sadly. I have a very long list of beloved games and did include some game designers here, but I'm hard-pressed to think of many other non-man game designers I'd include in the genuinely respect column (I'll include at least two tomorrow but might cheat a bit).
TL;DR: this was fun and you should do it too.

Hummm.
So I was thinking about how with a couple of caster-boards and straps, the bed could be upturned and stowed in the studio. Probably? I should have figured for a fold-away really.
Still. Could work...
Then, without a bed in there, the place could turn into a dining room.
I was thinking about a shape of a table for a dinner party in there.
Oh my god.
This semi-circle table curve of wood and attachable table-legs and fold-able stools might just fit, like, under the bed normally?
Looks perfect for a card-game or a Dungeon Master setup.
Could that table and it's legs and it's chairs all fit under the bed? Probably not at it's current height. But I want to raise it a bit anyway.
🤔
Oh my god, look at this though. The projector is pointed at the wall behind the throne surrounded by the seats for the council of seven.
This could be built.
Not right away, but eventually?

Fortunately, incapacitating "AI" is fairly easy. It's all still just computers & code.
I mean, I like the analogy but it has a limit. AI is like 2-digit years: a bad idea that many people always knew was shoddy but no one fixed until everyone did because they had to.
I don't know what the equivalent might be for "AI" but I expect that sometime next year we'll start seeing BIG stumbles that result in orgs running away (individually) from it.

"You scored 9 out of 10. Nicely done! Your knowledge is impressive. But there's still room to improve! Of everyone who has taken the quiz, 6 percent had more correct answers, and 91 percent had fewer correct answers."
Got a lucky guess on one.

It's 08:00 in the morning, here at 55°N 4°W, and the sun will in theory rise in ten minutes. But it's still dark.
And we're still 24 days away from the turning of the year: it will get still darker before the light begins to return. And, as in every year, the warmth will lag a couple of months behind the light, retarded by the thermal mass of the atmosphere and the earth.
This is not my favourite season.

I've been working on a bit of a larger project. It is still very much a work in progress. It's an attempt to combine blog and mastodon posts with other things I've written in the past, along with some original analysis, into a zine. I'm probably about 2/3 of the way through.
It's primarily focused on political theory and critique, which, I think, deviates a bit from how a lot of other folks view the world. It's pretty explicitly anarchist, though I don't think I've actually put the word "anarchism" or referenced the ideology anywhere so explicitly.
I'd love feedback (especially around editing and flow) if anyone would be willing to put eyes on it and tell me what they think:

NFL futures: Rams still Super Bowl favorites; 49ers close gap espn.com/espn/betting/story/_/

They told the poor white man:
"You may be starving,
you may be broke,
but at least you aren't one of Them."
It worked.
The poor whites stopped fighting the rich.
They started guarding the rich.
They accepted their poverty -- because they had been given a false sense of superiority.
The "Divide and Rule" algorithm was born.
350 years later, the campaign is still running.

Looking at the ARMv8-A ARM and I see implementer ID 0x44 is DEC.
I'm... very confident DEC has never built an ARMv8 CPU core.
Is this just copy-pasted from earlier docs because DEC had an ARM architecture license in years past? Or is this license still valid and held by DEC's successors (I think DEC -> Compaq -> HP -> HPE, does HPE make custom ARM cores?)

Experimental credit based flow control in TS.NET plus ngscopeclient for reduced buffer bloat and much better performance over LANs.
This is 2x 50M points (100M points per trigger) updating at around 8.3-8.5 Hz over 10/40GbE.
The TS.NET side of this isn't merged and there's still some bugs to chase but it's looking *really* good.

Washington folks: anybody know the history of WAC 308-330-500 and adjacent statutes? What was the rationale?
When did it stop being enforced? And why? It's clearly a dead law, I've never seen a bicycle license plate in the ten years I've lived here. Although I guess a cop in a bad mood could probably still ticket you for violating it if they really wanted to.
