I love this painting, because you can almost smell the soil. The wire on the fence, and the nettles in front, give a striking composition against the view behind the garden. Then you realise when it was painted.
Stanley Spencer - Landscape in North Wales - 1938
#art #wales

A painting of a garden, looking over a rustic fence, and past some cultivated soil and a red shed, to the sweeping view of wide valley and hills behind. The artist uses lots of lush green, and it is painted in a very realistic style, but with a softness to the brush strokes.

In The Garden Of Eden.
(From one of my favorite hikes last year, October 2025... a place of absolute solitude, harmony, peace and positive vibes, a feast for the eyes)
#FootpathFriday #LandscapePhotography

The upper part of a high alpine glacial valley in the most beautiful autumn colors with golden yellow grasses, small bushes with orange leaves, red patches of heather and blueberries, and small swiss pines dotted here and there. A small waterfall emerges between some of the rock cliffs. The snow capped peaks of large mountain in the hazy background. Clear blue sky with a single small white cloud

The front of the new Computing and Information Science building looked like a garden center when they were installing the landscaping
#photo #photography #cornell

In the foreground a mulch field with trees in bags resting on top, to the left and center a striking building with vertical window rows bent almost like an "L", blue sky above, and a gently curved big building that comes across as small in the wide angle view. A line of glistening points across the diagonal and a polygonal orange shape in the lower left were made by light from the sun (out of the frame to the upper right) bouncing around in my lens.

“How did it feel for the man who built a home, only to watch it turn to the rubble? How does a farmer stand before the land he tended year after year, now lying barren—no scent of soil, no whisper of harvest? How does a father tell his son the school he loved is gone, that the garden where he played is now only a rumor in the rubble? How does a mother walk through the ghost of a playground, finding a small shoe, a torn notebook, a toy she once mended? How do neighbors look at one another, wo…

Today in the drizzle I stopped by the Living Library, a beautiful native plant garden near SF's Balboa Park at the San Jose/Seneca intersection. Highly recommend a visit to see some #ceanothus in bloom and California poppies and island mallows beginning to, and much more.

A lush green garden with various shrubs and forbs, a curving stone path to the left, a couple of trees, and there's a two-story school building with sand-colored walls off to the side. There's an information panel that's too distant to make out the text in this photo.
A shrub with large leaves and a few small pink flowers. Seems to be Malva assurgentiflora, or island mallow.
A row of two or three shrubs that look like one shrub at first glance, but there are two distinct types of flowers: one variety is more blue-indigo and larger, the other is smaller and purple. They have dark green leaves and are something in the Ceanothus genus, or mountain lilac.
Information panel titled: "California Native Plants: The ecological benefits of planting Native San Francisco. Life frames a living library."

A bunch of text I can't fit here about the benefits of planting native, restoring nature, one plant at a time. A colorful drawing shows some California native plants and their associated pollinators: California poppy and native bees, milkweed and monarch butterfly, yarrow and hummingbird, buckwheat and native bee, toyon and cedar waxwing.

Wow, loving our greenhouse - already have the first tomatoes turning red! Only a couple weeks into summer (not even proper summer, 22 Dec in Aotearoa, yet) Crazy! This is months before we've ever had ripening fruit pre-greenhouse.

Photo from near the ground in a garden patch inside a greenhouse, looking at a small group of tomatoes on a tomato bush, two of which are turning red. A number of other tomato plants are nearby, some with many still green tomatoes. In the foreground is a timber upright with wires going through it which run the length of the garden and are used to tie up the tomatoes in a row. The plants are tied to the steel wires with strips of old bicycle inner tubes. They work great!

Ellen Patton has been a joy to add to our learning and engagement team and to our staff as a whole. A native Athenian, she grew up visiting the museum, which helped her forge strong connections with both the artwork and her family. “I think that having these great memories in the museum makes me want to push for everyone who visits to have a connective experience,” Patton said.

I stopped buying books (or anything, really) from Amazon years ago, when it became apparent the working conditions at their many processing centres are appalling and they were actively busting unions. I have never regretted that stance, and I have always been able to find the books, etc. I need from other sources.
I hope more authors — and big name ones too — will follow this lead.

'writing is more than just the process by which you obtain a piece of text, right? it's also about finding out what you wanted to say in the first place, and how you wanted to say it. this post existed in my head first as a thought, then it started to gel into words, and then i tried pulling those words out to arrange them in a way that (hopefully) gets my point across. ... i alone can get the thought out and writing is how i do that.'

The city is racing toward net-zero by 2050 with bold moves: diverting 100% of garden waste from landfills by 2040, building micro-grids in informal settlements, and creating jobs while cutting emissions.
Their approach is becoming a model for scalable climate solutions across the continent.

Spotted a newly cleaned-up area across the street from the northeast tip of Bernal Heights Park, with some little plants like this coyote brush (Baccharis pilularis). It's nice to see this kind of stewardship and especially the use of SF native plants

A small shrub with spiny green leaves grows in a vertical form, perhaps 2-3 feet high, in a roadside garden era mulched with twigs and thin wood chips, alongside a few other small plants and a stone. A metal guardrail runs across the back of the space, and in the corner is a larger, more mature shrub with tall pinkish-orange flowers (that I don't think is native).

First running day of robotic lawnmower here. Not too bad a performance given the length of the grass and complexity of garden. It only needed rescuing once (reported a wheel drive problem) I suspect because of the grass length.

We have come to Scottsdales Garden Centre, mostly to experience the overload of the Christmas animated models display, which is just so over the top that it's wonderful. #christmas #loudsunday #cambridge

A Christmas model fairground in a display case in a shop, just so over-full with lights and snow and trains. People mill around.
A model mountain scene with Christmas trees, model houses, and lots of twinkling lights and fake snow. Ultimate kitsch. Everything is on sale here too.

Foodies forgive us, though we know exactly what we do. We had so much garlic from the garden this year that now absolutely has to be late planted, eaten or stored that we have resorted to Jarlic. 🌱 #gardening #oklahoma

My phone camera doesn't do justice to this tiny wing I found on the ground under a flowering fennel in the garden. It's about 2 cm length. #fairieslivehere

never seen California poppy grow this tall before
(that's coyote mint on the left)

sidewalk garden with a 2.5 feet tall (not in bloom) California poppy plant, a non-woody plant with sort of parsley-like green leaves and a green stem.

to the lower left is a smaller coyote mint, with spear-like green leaves radiating outward in groups of four.
