It's the Day of Hermes aka Mercurius Day aka #Wednesday! 🐏
"It is said that after death, the tutelary god (daimon) of each person, to whom he had been allotted in life, leads him to a place where the dead are gathered together [i.e. Hermes]; then they are judged and depart to the other world with the guide."
Plato, Phaedo 107c

Athenian red-figure amphora depicting the god Hermes weighing souls (psychostasis). In Book 5 of the Odyssey, Hermes, messenger of the gods, is sent to tell the nymph Kalypso to allow Odysseus to leave so he can return home after several years of being detained on the island of Ogygia. Hermes is also known as the god of boundaries, and as such he is Psychopompos, or “soul-guide”: He leads the souls of the dead to the house of Hades. In a sense, Odysseus is dead, imprisoned on an island in the m…

On an island in the Arctic Ocean, in a region that is warming as much as seven times as fast as the rest of the planet, the food chain is being turned upside down.
Underwater kelp forests are surging into once-frozen waters, replacing other native species.
Reindeer, cut off from traditional foraging routes over vanishing sea ice, now graze on seaweed when they cannot reach inland grasses and lichen.
And polar bears, deprived of the ice platforms they once used to hunt seals, …

Trump declined to approve more than $400 million in military aid to Taiwan this summer,
as he tries to negotiate a trade deal and potential summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

The decision, which may still be reversed, marks a U-turn in U.S. policy toward the self-governing island that China claims as its own territory.

Two people familiar with the matter said the package was worth more than $400 million and would have been “more lethal” than past rounds of aid to Taiwan…

I don't post my runs very often, but this one was pretty nice. 20k on the Vliehors, the largest sand plain in Europe. I was a little late, so I spent most of the time running in the sunset.
Met some seals on the way.

Some seals lying on a sandy beach, with the sea behind them. The light is low and yellow-pink.
A beach marked with many little puddles, in the late stages of a sunset. In the foreground is a small wooden structure. This is the "drenkelingen huisje" which was built as a refugee for sailers who washed up here.
A shoreline in the sunset. We see small waves rolling into a beach. In the distance is a lighthouse. This is the western most tip of Vlieland. The lighthouse is that of the neighboring island.

I think the root of the “AI” evil is when AI researchers in the 1960s recognized that they outrageously underestimated the complexity of the human mind.
They became humiliated by their promises that AGI was just a few years away—and then went full goblin mode that’s lasting to this day.
Some of the OG researchers took it quite badly that they stalled and weren’t in the limelight anymore.
‣ Marvin Minsky (co-founder of MIT AI lab and arguably the most important early AI bro) went on to visit Epstein’s island multiple times.
‣ Karl Steinbuch, who came up with the German term for computer science ("Informatik")—who also was a literal Nazi (and likely war criminal) in World War II—later wrote articles in ultra-right magazines about things like “equal rights rob women of their children”.
‣ John McCarthy (inventor of Lisp, co-authored document that coined the term “Artificial Intelligence”) was a staunch Republican who years later claimed (in a serious article) that “thermostats have beliefs”.
[one moment, I am receiving more information]
‣ There’s a second Epstein Island AI pioneer? Who also was Chief Learning Officer at… Trump University? That would be Roger Schank (founded one of the first AI companies in the 1980s AI boom, it even had an IPO. Of course the 1980s AI bubble burst).
Obviously all of the above received all the awards in computer science and are very revered people.

Content warning: bitcoin conference report

Despite much opinion to the contrary, the government money we use is crappy.
I'm at bitfest in Manchester to find out if Bitcoin could be a better money.
It could hardly be worse.
The mood is still good, people are joking about recent devaluation rather than crying. Those who aren't all in are trying to buy more at the discount.
After an introduction by Mad Bitcoins, Joe Bryan explains the problem with government money.
He imagines an island on which two types of money are tried, with a dividing wall between them.
When economic problems hit, government can just print more money on the fiat side. Everyone now using money which is worth less. Distorting prices, inflating asset prices, making the rich (who hold assets) richer and the poor (who have to pay inflated prices) poorer. Driving wealth inequality.
On the hard money side, government must tax properly. Take in more from the rich rather than inflating to take it from the poor. Reducing wealth inequality.
On the government money side, the wealthy monitize houses, stocks, resources. Saving in money is impossible, its inflated away. So they save in assets and hording resources. Capital is misallocated. The youth can't afford houses. Poverty traps are caused. The only way out is printing more for benefits. Making it all worse. More economic crises, more printing. More government debt.
Eventually, the wall is broken. Government money people can save in the hard money instead. It reduces the value of government money further. More printing. More inflation.
Eventually, war. Funded by printed money.
The dollar is the best of a bad bunch all other government money is falling in value even faster.
I wonder, is bitcoin really this better money though? It's limited, hard, and can't be printed without energy investment.
I'm still unsure that fixing money fixes the world.
--
Note: "crypto" is mostly more like government money than bitcoin. It can be printed indefinitely by it's makers, does not cost it's makers to print. Crypto is usually just a scam people to get more bitcoin. Bitcoin is not crypto.

The Trump administration is not attacking the "excesses" of "woke" scholarship. They're at war with the very idea of power analysis, with the feeling of deep empathy with the oppressed, with ethical commitment to make a just world.

It wasn’t so much what Zohran Mamdani said. It was how he said it.

“We’re going to stand up for Haiti, because you taught the world about freedom!” the Democratic nominee for mayor of New York exclaimed to an elated crowd at a Haitian music festival in June, fresh off his upset victory in the primary.

Mr. Mamdani pronounced the island nation’s name “AH-ee-tee” — near-perfect Creole elocution.

“When I heard him say that, I smiled,” recalled Brian Purnell, one of Mr. Mamdani’s former professor…
He would also become one of the most visible representations of a new generation of progressives — whose formative years as young adults were shaped by elite colleges where, over the last decade, theories of social and racial justice became even more deeply ingrained in liberal arts education.

Mr. Mamdani graduated in 2014 from Bowdoin College, in Brunswick, Maine, with a bachelor’s degree in Africana studies. And his experience there — readings of critical race theorists in the classroom and …

Good Morning #Canada
Sunday mornings should include some relaxation, a good cup of coffee, and a tale of one man forging a legacy of independence. Today we present to you the story of American businessman Russell Arundel who, in 1949, claimed sovereignty over approximately 4 acres of Outer Bald Tusket Island, off the southern tip of Nova Scotia. After purchasing the island for $750, Arundel announced the principality of Outer Baldonia with its own charter, a flag, currency, passports, and an organized military that consisted of 69 fishermen (all Admirals). Citizens of the principality who caught a Bluefin tuna and paid a $50 fee were accorded the rank of prince. Government officials included Prince of Princes Russell Arundel, Chancellor Elson Boudreau, and Ambassador Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary Ron Wallace. The Canadian government mostly ignored the farce but an official Russian communication declared Outer Baldonia a fascist state.

The new fence is basically done!!
Funny story that will hit home to anyone on Vancouver Island:
Two days ago the builders hadn’t added the new top section to the big gate in the back. A very large buck/deer jumped the fence and bent the wire so they had to try and bend it back out the best they could”
This is particularly funny for us because the other side, near the chicken coop (before it was there) the old fencing was bent from an over-eager bear trying to climb in.
Just mother nature ensuring balance, new and old, bent and unbent.
I am glad we are now bylaw-compliant for the #poolpond and the edibles should be out of the reach of the larger animals (racoons and birds and cats and squirrels and whatever other small creatures are inescapable)
The arbutus tree is now leaning against the fence. We'll see if it gets the message and grows in a more vertical kind of way naturally relieving stress from the fence, or if we might have to provide in a portal.
The most surprising part they managed to conquer was lifting the grape as high as they did! Very satisfied with that development!

Good Morning #Canada
In July 1871, the City of Victoria officially became the capital of British Columbia, when the province joined the rest of Canada. At the time, the city was larger than Vancouver and had served as the most important settlement in the area for decades. The Colony of Vancouver Island also stamped their little feet and demanded that Victoria be designated as the capital in return for the island to join with the mainland to become part of Canada. Captain James Cook was the first British person to set foot on Vancouver Island in 1778, and in 1843, Fort Victoria was established by the Hudson's Bay Company. There is a long history of Vancouver Island serving as a naval base, and today, Victoria is the home of Canada’s Pacific Coast naval and military headquarters in nearby Esquimalt. Victoria is a top tourist destination and is regularly rated top 5 worldwide as an awesome place to live.

Have a beautiful Day of Aphrodite aka Venus' Day aka Frigg's Day aka Friday 🌹

🏛 Aphrodite Anadyomene from Ptolemaic Egypt made from faience, late 2nd century BCE.
#DayOfAphrodite

A true product of a multicultural society in Ptolemaic Egypt, this statuette combines a classical image of the Greek goddess Aphrodite appearing from the sea, just born, with the typically Egyptian material, faience. Egyptian artists achieved the characteristic brilliant blue of faience in a complex process combining ground quartz with a mixture of alkali.

The goddess is shown entirely nude, her hands raised to wring out her hair. At her left is a greatly schematized urn with garment thrown ov…
