A favorite dental assistant who long worked on my teeth once mentioned that she’d also had Pete Docter in her care at an orthodontia clinic when he was young, and she still vividly remembered his teeth — not in a good way or a bad way, just in a “she’s a professional and every set of teeth is unique” kind of way.

Finally some progress. But it's baffling.
The very first step of the de-embed filter is to execute FFTs of dinFwd to vectorTempBuf3 and dinRev to vectorTempBuf1.
It appears that somehow the FFTs trade places in the failure scenario, with the frequency domain version of dinFwd being written to vectorTempBuf1 and dinRev going to vectorTempBuf3.
I don't even know where to start debugging this, it smells like something going wrong in the depths of vkFFT with some state …

You can only do this once you've developed taste and skill and gone the wrong direction a bunch. You cannot shortcut this experience, but as someone told me at a time I was not quite ready to hear it, the job of the senior engineer is to bring clarity.
Decisions get made so fast, before we're really ready for them, and in conflict. The results are mediocre to bad. It's up to us to sort through the mess and say "this way" out of it. Not as dictators or authorities, but as people who understand the territory. And who can spot when their teams are going in circles and pick a path out.

When I got in to tech, things felt fragile. After years of trying to fix things, I spent more years feeling as though the information apocalypse was immanent. Everywhere I turned, something was broken horribly. I can't even count the number of times I've just had to be like, "oh fuck. That's really bad. I knew it was bad, but like... oh fuck."
We have *all* had our identity stolen. I don't even know how many times my social security number has been in a data breach. How many of my medical records are on the market? But yeah, sure, let's accelerate that.
The problem was never that we couldn't find problems. The problem has always been "leadership" being unwilling to invest in fixing them. The problem has always been this mind-set of growth-at-any-cost.
I tuck these things away in my brain, and they sit there gnawing on my sanity, like little RFK worms.

I have basically mildly positive feelings about Gemini Nano being available in Chrome. I don't use Chrome, but lots of stuff should be done on-device, not off. That's a win.
If "software shouldn't have features i don't like" is the argument you're actually making, that's not really a good argument. Even when the feature is an LLM model.
"Chrome is getting big and bloated and we can do better” is absolutely a good argument you can make.
And then the real kicker: Google pushing the web platform around through dominance is just the real ick here. It's the same sort of thing monopoly power enables. Companies that own verticals in the economy or a product market can dictate rather than negotiate. This is, in general, bad. Google does this, not because the ideas its employees put forward are good, but because they work out to be in Google's interests. And those interests can run counter to the rest of the world.
That's what we have to push back on.
