❝One unit-level message bluntly said "no fat soldiers."❞
Read this story. Get it out. This is important.
❝“If soldiers have political views that are in opposition to the current administration and they don't want to be in the audience then they need to speak with their leadership and get swapped out,” another note to troops said.❞
In a country where the military is one of the more respected institutions, people need — NEED — to hear this:
They engineered the audience. They faked the appearance of soldiers’ support.
They staged it like reality TV.

Calamus 21 Music always round me
A celebration of life, the metaphor of music all around us if only you can hear it. The last line is what gives me pause, it suggests an interesting nuance of meaning.
I do not think the performers know themselves—But now I think I begin to know them.
I'm a little pressed to find a gay reading of this poem, it doesn't have the usual paeans to manly love. There is a pleasant exuberance and sensuality to it, "shuddering luciously" and all. But it's the beginning lines that really catch me:
Music always round me ... yet long untaught I did not hear,
But now the chorus I hear, and am elated,
It's like there's a secret world of pleasure that Whitman only recently has learned to enjoy himself. A feeling similar to the epiphany of coming out to oneself.

We don’t need a general solution for how we accommodate trans kids in sports. It can be handled on a case by case basis. It’s being hypothesized into absurd scale to trigger reaction. There’s no “catastrophe” possible. There are a few dozen specific cases and they are different enough that they should be handled independently.
The details in real cases always seem to argue in favor of the trans kid’s choice.

When I say that the protesters were angry but not violent, I guess I should also say this:
In the sick imagination of white supremacy, for a Black or brown person to be angry •is• for them to be violent, by definition.
So when you hear people saying “they were violent,” those people are flat wrong — but they may also be describing something that is in fact completely real and completely consistent in their mind.

Finished "Far from the Tree" by Robin Benway last night. For me, it was a gripping and absolutely delightful read. I can recognize that I'm absolutely unequipped to judge whether it authentically reflects the experiences of many or few of the people whose situations are similar to the protagonists', but I find myself fervently hopeful for the former, even as I recognize such hopes in the part of people like me can be part of ultimately harmful publishing selection feedback loops. (If anyone reading this happens to have read the book and found it distasteful, I'd love to hear that.) Notwithstanding my probably overcautious uncertainty, I'll definitely be seeking out more books by Benway. At the very least, I really enjoyed her little joining and framing metaphors, and the pacing and plot construction were good, with lots of nicely interwoven implications arising through the buildup, and an ending that left me satisfied (albeit, I'm an inveterate optimist, YMMV).

Calamus 24 I hear it is charged against me
This poem feels just so typically Whitman, but lesser somehow. Not one of my favorites.
He says he is "charged that I seek to destroy institutions". Charged by whom, one wonders, is he really so important? He sort of denies this, or is ambivalent to it, and then gets to the queer part:
I will establish ... the institution of the dear love of comrades
And here we are again at the central queer question: just what does he mean by "dear love of comrades"? As I read these poems I'm increasingly thinking it's both things. Sure, it's brotherly love, adhesiveness, a sort of robust fraternity. But so much of his writing and life is homoerotic it has to also have that charge. It can be both.
I feel like I've heard that phrase "the institution of the dear love of comrades" repeated often.

That's why you can find cages filled with little birds for sale at the bigger Buddhist temples here in Saigon.
To sell them, you'll have to catch them first. So, in many trees lining a canal here, you'll hear birds chirping away.
Or is it the mp3 player you hear?
On the left you see a small cage, filled with birds that were lured in there by the mp3 player (in a little plastic bag) on the right of the photo. Difficult to spot, but you'll get there.

"Dr. Dobb’s would cover every month some programming topic with an excellent series of monographs and a wide array of sample code, interviews, and even excellent humor. In the latter case, an honorary mention goes to Verity Stob, because of their uncanny description of the daily life of a software developer in the Microsoft galaxy of the late 1990s. Those who witnessed the good old days of `On Error Resume Next` are now nodding their heads in despair. I hear you."

Generating Shakespeare-like text with an n-gram language model is straight forward and quite simple. But, don't expect to much of it. It will not be able to recreate a lost Shakespear play for you ;-) It's merely a parrot, making up well sounding sentences out of fragments of original Shakespeare texts...

Here’s the real actual definition of “artificial intelligence,” the true technical meaning in research and engineering circles when it’s not being used as marketing hype.
Artificial intelligence is anything that
1. humans are generally good at, and
2. computers were recently bad at.
That’s it. That’s all it means. You’ll hear people refine it and dress it up, but that’s the heart of the definition. (Check Wikipedia!)

Had a good chat with C this morning and she said she has no interest in sleeping with anyone else and that she loves me and only wants to be with me. I pushed her hard to make sure she wasn’t just saying what she thought I wanted to hear, and she convinced me that she’s sincere and that I misunderstood our conversation on Saturday.

I'm not advocating psychopathy, but hear me out. Aren't psychopaths happier than everyone else? They feel no empathy, so they don't feel guilty or remorseful for anything they've ever done. They feel superior to those around them. What they want, at this moment, is basically all they will ever care about.
Seems like a fairly placid internal life, to me...

I often read and hear that ChatGPT and other Gen AI solutions are the future and will replace us all - especially in IT. As someone that moved cities and switch universities for an AI focus I was of course super curious about this and therefore often try ChatGPT out just for funsies.
All that I can say, is: Don't do it. I tried coding with ChatGPT, and while it produces okeyish results for Python and Java, it will completely fail if you try more complicated and less common things (…
