I see @… has a similar reaction about a study that says something we want to hear.
Re that second remark, “The *point* of AI is to make cognitive abilities irrelevant,” well, that’s the thing that’s up for debate right now. Making cognitive abilities (and thus labor, and people) irrelevant is very much the marketing pitch of the hype bubble. That pitch is about cost cutting, and about fear and intimidation — an intoxicating, investor-frothing mixture of fantasy and terror.
It’s not the only vision of AI, however.

A common comment I hear from AI fanbois is you need to refine your prompt, and need to ask many times. And so they do.
Each prompt consumes 16oz of water just to answer, maybe double if you used voice, and a massive amount of energy and natural resources, so conservatively, what does each and every prompt REALLY cost? We do know OpenAI spent $12M to extract $9M, so maybe $10/prompt?
How is this "good for business"?

We don’t need a general solution for how we accommodate trans kids in sports. It can be handled on a case by case basis. It’s being hypothesized into absurd scale to trigger reaction. There’s no “catastrophe” possible. There are a few dozen specific cases and they are different enough that they should be handled independently.
The details in real cases always seem to argue in favor of the trans kid’s choice.

Calamus 24 I hear it is charged against me
This poem feels just so typically Whitman, but lesser somehow. Not one of my favorites.
He says he is "charged that I seek to destroy institutions". Charged by whom, one wonders, is he really so important? He sort of denies this, or is ambivalent to it, and then gets to the queer part:
I will establish ... the institution of the dear love of comrades
And here we are again at the central queer question: just what does he mean by "dear love of comrades"? As I read these poems I'm increasingly thinking it's both things. Sure, it's brotherly love, adhesiveness, a sort of robust fraternity. But so much of his writing and life is homoerotic it has to also have that charge. It can be both.
I feel like I've heard that phrase "the institution of the dear love of comrades" repeated often.

Finished "Far from the Tree" by Robin Benway last night. For me, it was a gripping and absolutely delightful read. I can recognize that I'm absolutely unequipped to judge whether it authentically reflects the experiences of many or few of the people whose situations are similar to the protagonists', but I find myself fervently hopeful for the former, even as I recognize such hopes in the part of people like me can be part of ultimately harmful publishing selection feedback loops. (If anyone reading this happens to have read the book and found it distasteful, I'd love to hear that.) Notwithstanding my probably overcautious uncertainty, I'll definitely be seeking out more books by Benway. At the very least, I really enjoyed her little joining and framing metaphors, and the pacing and plot construction were good, with lots of nicely interwoven implications arising through the buildup, and an ending that left me satisfied (albeit, I'm an inveterate optimist, YMMV).

You know that thing we hear from Americans all the time?
"If Bush gets elected again, I'm leaving the USA."
"If Obama doesn't win, I'm moving to Canada."
"If Trump wins, I need an exit plan."
Well, this time it's actually happening. Not just words, but I personally know several people who are not just threatening to leave the United States, but they actually have a plan and are literally in the middle of packing and shipping…

ANIMATION INDUSTRY IN DANGER : WORLD UNIONS DECLARE EMERGENCY IN THE FACE OF GENERATIVE Al USE. Graphic with the text Let's Stop AI Generated Art.
ENGLISH VERSION

This statement was composed by a collective of international Animation Unions, federations, and organisations calling for action in regards to the usage of generative Artificial Intelligence and its destructive impact, not only on the global animation industry and the craft itself, but also on everyone who is employed by it, our culture and our planet. The animation industry is suffering, after the explosion of the streaming bubble and the pandemic. The workers are feeling the …
This same technology is being used to foster dissent, confusion and distrust among the public. This unchecked growth and unjustified techno-optimism comes with incredible environmental consequences, including expanding demand for computing power, larger carbon footprints, shifts in patterns of electricity and water demands and an accelerated depletion of natural resources. As such, there is a need for protection frameworks around GenAl, centered around transparency, compensation, control on the…
We invite all workers, students and allies to join us in Annecy festival, to discuss concerns and defense against GenAl, and to hear unions representatives read the statement on Thursday, June 12th, at 2 PM, on the Paquier (and then a map graphic)

Setting a caged animal free is good for your karma.
That's why you can find cages filled with little birds for sale at the bigger Buddhist temples here in Saigon.
To sell them, you'll have to catch them first. So, in many trees lining a canal here, you'll hear birds chirping away.
Or is it the mp3 player you hear?
On the left you see a small cage, filled with birds that were lured in there by the mp3 player (in a little plastic bag) on the right of the photo. Difficult to spot, but you'll get there.
During the week cages are picked up and rotated out for empty ones.

When I say that the protesters were angry but not violent, I guess I should also say this:
In the sick imagination of white supremacy, for a Black or brown person to be angry •is• for them to be violent, by definition.
So when you hear people saying “they were violent,” those people are flat wrong — but they may also be describing something that is in fact completely real and completely consistent in their mind.

Ever hear of the legitimate file sharing service files.catbox[.]moe? It’s really uncommon and you should probably block it in your environment.
Read Palo Alto’s overview of a DarkCloud Steamer campaign that makes use of a catbox.moe file share to distribute its payload here.

The kind of autist who is too skint to buy proper headphones but will get terminally attached to that one and ONLY THAT ONE pair of cheap earplugs that she can stand, and then years later identifies the model and oh look, yeah they do actually technically sound better than the other equally cheap ones, yes I do actually hear the difference between 5-24kHz frequency range and 20-20kHz.

“I know faithful people, including faithful preachers, who persist in hope for the future, against all odds, grounded in their hope in God’s steadfastness. That hope emboldens them both to hear and preach the truth of God’s compassion and of God’s justice, and to act accordingly. Their hope emboldens me.”

Every time I hear the words, "I just feel like..." in conversation, I try to excuse myself from the discussion because that's a tell that the speaker's put no forethought into their argument & likely has no actual evidence of the point they're making.
Don't workshop your homespun logic on me.

Trump's budget eliminating funding for #IMLS --and so many other critical federal programs-- means we can't wait for court cases to proceed, but need to keep the pressure on our elected officials to stop this budgetary assault on our country. I just called my representative and senators and hope that you all will as well.

Here’s the real actual definition of “artificial intelligence,” the true technical meaning in research and engineering circles when it’s not being used as marketing hype.
Artificial intelligence is anything that
1. humans are generally good at, and
2. computers were recently bad at.
That’s it. That’s all it means. You’ll hear people refine it and dress it up, but that’s the heart of the definition. (Check Wikipedia!)
