Read this story. Get it out. This is important.

In a country where the military is one of the more respected institutions, people need — NEED — to hear this:
They engineered the audience. They faked the appearance of soldiers’ support.
They staged it like reality TV.

Calamus 21 Music always round me
A celebration of life, the metaphor of music all around us if only you can hear it. The last line is what gives me pause, it suggests an interesting nuance of meaning.
I do not think the performers know themselves—But now I think I begin to know them.
I'm a little pressed to find a gay reading of this poem, it doesn't have the usual paeans to manly love. There is a pleasant exuberance and sensuality to it, "shuddering luciously" and all. But it's the beginning lines that really catch me:
Music always round me ... yet long untaught I did not hear,
But now the chorus I hear, and am elated,
It's like there's a secret world of pleasure that Whitman only recently has learned to enjoy himself. A feeling similar to the epiphany of coming out to oneself.
#WordWeavers 9 June: MC POV: Whose advice do you value the most?
MC: There are some people I listen to, whose advice I consider. But one of the few that can make me go along with a course of action despite my misgivings, is my brother. But don't you dare tell him that, he'll never let me hear the end of it. I trust him with my life, but sometimes he's insufferable.
She’s right, you know.
We don’t need a general solution for how we accommodate trans kids in sports. It can be handled on a case by case basis. It’s being hypothesized into absurd scale to trigger reaction. There’s no “catastrophe” possible. There are a few dozen specific cases and they are different enough that they should be handled independently.
The details in real cases always seem to argue in favor of the trans kid’s choice.

When I say that the protesters were angry but not violent, I guess I should also say this:
In the sick imagination of white supremacy, for a Black or brown person to be angry •is• for them to be violent, by definition.
So when you hear people saying “they were violent,” those people are flat wrong — but they may also be describing something that is in fact completely real and completely consistent in their mind.
Every time I hear the words, "I just feel like..." in conversation, I try to excuse myself from the discussion because that's a tell that the speaker's put no forethought into their argument & likely has no actual evidence of the point they're making.
Don't workshop your homespun logic on me.
What are your favorite "accessibility red flags"?

Finished "Far from the Tree" by Robin Benway last night. For me, it was a gripping and absolutely delightful read. I can recognize that I'm absolutely unequipped to judge whether it authentically reflects the experiences of many or few of the people whose situations are similar to the protagonists', but I find myself fervently hopeful for the former, even as I recognize such hopes in the part of people like me can be part of ultimately harmful publishing selection feedback loops. (If anyone reading this happens to have read the book and found it distasteful, I'd love to hear that.) Notwithstanding my probably overcautious uncertainty, I'll definitely be seeking out more books by Benway. At the very least, I really enjoyed her little joining and framing metaphors, and the pacing and plot construction were good, with lots of nicely interwoven implications arising through the buildup, and an ending that left me satisfied (albeit, I'm an inveterate optimist, YMMV).

Calamus 24 I hear it is charged against me
This poem feels just so typically Whitman, but lesser somehow. Not one of my favorites.
He says he is "charged that I seek to destroy institutions". Charged by whom, one wonders, is he really so important? He sort of denies this, or is ambivalent to it, and then gets to the queer part:
I will establish ... the institution of the dear love of comrades
And here we are again at the central queer question: just what does he mean by "dear love of comrades"? As I read these poems I'm increasingly thinking it's both things. Sure, it's brotherly love, adhesiveness, a sort of robust fraternity. But so much of his writing and life is homoerotic it has to also have that charge. It can be both.
I feel like I've heard that phrase "the institution of the dear love of comrades" repeated often.
People keep yapping to me at work while I wear my earplugs (them not realizing I have earplugs in) so I got earmuffs instead so people can more easily see that I might not hear them well (also means I can leave my house keys in my locker at the office).
Also some different filters (a bit less dampening and less damping on the higher-ends) for my earplugs (that I mostly use for driving my car n stuff).
