What is a #name? It is not me, but it is mine. It signifies me. It identifies me. Many cultures historically and presently allow, or even mandate, that individuals choose their name, often ritually, at mileposts in their lives. Maybe more than once, as need be. Maybe more than one name concurrently. But our govt doesn’t like it when trans folk, for instance, adopt a new name when their “circumstances”…

Speaking of name changes, J.D. Vance has changed his name several times. His name doesn’t match his birth certificate. Guess he can’t vote either.

Who am I kidding? Of course he can vote. Because he checks off all the boxes of privilege. And of course Kris Jenner can vote, because (if she actually votes at all, I dunno) she likely votes republican. MAGA must be really confused there, if they even think about it. What’s her passport say?

Obviously the people in charge will do whatever they can…

If your supervisor suggests to submit a paper to a venue of a field relevant for your dissertation, addressing the architecture of the system you develop and which is the heart of your dissertation, maybe, just maybe, it’s not the very best idea to say: I don’t see what could be interesting here, it’s just a bunch of Python classes

I eventually got her on Linux (initially with Mint). Maybe 15 years ago?
She started a new job and they gave her a new macbook, and she haaaaaates it. I can't tell if it's because she just got used to Linux, or if it's because Apple has actually made their OS worse in the past 15 years.

There's maybe a second of slack between when I could have first seen her, my known reaction time (0.6s), & the time it takes to decelerate at half a G from 17mph to stopped (0.5G is about max for a bicycle).

The upper half of the frame is mostly filled by red white and blue streaks radiating out from the center (but starting halfway out) under a dark blue sky: behind and below that are streaks and puffs of smoke and under that the silhouettes of trees, a big cloud of smokes and a few motion streaked lights.

Weather forecast was about rain and maybe lightning ... so we just biked to your lokal mountain and did a quick loop in high humidity.

This made people give standing ovations in 2004 (and cost you ~$12,500 in today's money)… how many pixels* do you have at home now?
*maybe separate by display pixels and sensor pixels

14 year old comes into my office and asks if he can borrow my copy of Snow Crash.
Me:
“Oh you’re interested in that kind book now, I suppose. Cool. Yeah you can definitely borrow it!”
*me, remembering how that book ends*
“Ummmm maybe we should save that one for later. Here’s my copy of Cyptonomicon. You’ll love it.”
He’s on a pretty long leash as far as content goes, but he does not need to read about the events surrounding the dentata quite yet… 😬

I gather that Trump’s truth dot social runs on an #ActivityPub server. What if a private server were to federate with it in order to troll them, maybe feed them psyops crap, conspiracy fodder, fuck with them. Such a server might run behind a vpn, up only in stretches just long enough to get in & out to drop new shit and collect responses. Probably more

To anyone familiar with Alzheimer's disease: is it true that AD patients can have phases where they remember everything properly, and then go back to having forgotten those things?
Is there any research done on that aspect? I don't even know how to call it...
Edit: maybe "temporary lucidity"? I found a new york times article on "terminal lucidity" although it seem…

@… Best use for them that I can think of. They really aren't needed in DC, but if they are here they should do landscaping. Maybe some could be lifeguards at the public pools, too.

#ThursDeath this week is awesome new LP 'Flesh of Chaos' by death/thrash (mostly death) outfit CYCLOPIC. Cyclopic only has a couple members, they hail from a mix of Kazakhstan, Russia, and Germany. This is a cool record - maybe Obituary vibes, and I feel like I also some Morbid Angel or other OSDM stuff. And how about that cover art. 🔥

Twice in 2 weeks I’ve seen a guy 20-30yo on an ev-#wheelchair zipping down the street in our neighborhood. Not like the tanks in AARP tv ads. Regular tube-frame w/ black seat and back, big wheels back & small ones front. I wasn’t close enough to see how stripped-down it was. Not low-rider like marathoners use. Full upright. He was booking. Zigging and zagging like on a bike. Maybe that’s why he’s riding a chair now? If I see him again I’ll try to have a chat, ask him about his chair mods…

#randomCrap

some downy seed heads of some wildflower with a low sun behind them. it could of been bristly ox-tounge, idk, i was not paying enough attention to ID them later. anyroad, there is a blurry wind turbine in the background.
maybe an hour later, sun is setting, the snap is at an angle to get some of the horizon in and the turbine. it's a silhouette of the wind turbine in the foreground. no room to walk backwards any further. orangey brown sky, clouds obscuring the sunset. closer clouds are wispier.

once again, #Sigh (even though not surprising). Maybe this will make voters press their electeds for meaningful action? (if they do not, the damage only increases)

This is puzzling for me..
Do you know people who frequently use genAI / LLM (maybe yourself?)
Are these people aware of the current and future environmental cost of genAI and its datacenters, when we should instead be reducing those in order to save the planet? (let's try and forget about all the other problems it has for now)
If so, how do you / they justify using genAI despite those costs? (multiple choices possible)
