I can understand maybe not being able to comprehend this due to age (he's 79).
But there's a lot of young people who don't have problems with images like these which show wrong things, make up stuff that's weird, look creepy and misspell text.
I wonder if perhaps repeated COVID infections contribute to people's mental decline that is similar to age-related mental issues.

From The Georgia Straight
"The Park Theatre is closing and maybe I shouldn’t be taking it as hard as I am
"It’s unknown what will happen to the physical space the Park is set to depart. Figuratively, it will undoubtedly leave a massive hole in the city’s cultural fabric. It’s also a huge loss for Cambie Village.
"The Park’s final day of operation will be October 26. I plan to stop by there before then to smell the popcorn."

I started reading Manga.
At the moment I'm reading two.
1.Atom: The beginning
2. Hirayasumi
Atom is fine but i think its to futuristic for me or maybe to realistic with all the AI and robotics. But Hirayasumi is so nice and cozy to read, maybe i am more a fan of slice of life kind of Manga. So i might pass on Atom and read goodnight PUNPUN after i finished the Hirayasumi.

New Gist: No Contest
"There are, perhaps, alternative worlds where lots of things are different. Fianna Fšil maybe decide to run an MEP instead of a MIA. Or one where a fleet of no-hopers got nominated and we spent the whole campaign having to listen to the media asking candidates their opinions on the Latin mass and if cocaine bloat is a positive feature in a President. "
Also, I explain exactly what kind of idiot I have recently been.

Catherine Connolly: What do I know?

Back at the start of these Gists I said that Catherine Connolly was having a mare of a campaign. This, of course, was because I am an idiot. And, in this case, I was a particularly shameful kind of idiot. Like the most flabby-minded middle aged golf bore at the end of the club bar, I mistook my media diet for reality. Shame on me.

I spent much of today cleaning my office. It's amazing how messy it gets due to ongoing projects (my own and client projects) and so much paper. I was saving a lot of it for paper making but I've still got plenty of pulp in the fridge to use.
On Friday, the plan is no shopping, just cleaning the basement getting rid of cruft, maybe finding some things to donate or give away if possible.

Occasionally, I log into LinkedIn purely to check messages. Sometimes, I find a promoted message or an ad, maybe a connection request. Usually, nothing. Content often feel fake, and it's often difficult to find content that I'm interested in there. Is it even a site for businesses to connect, and people find work any more?
Back when it wasn't owned by Meta, I used to enjoy Instagram. Now it feels like a shop. I still miss scrolling through the feed, discovering content from the people that I followed. Sadly, a lot of creators that I liked are still on there, and nowhere else.
Mastodon is pretty much my only online home now, and I'm very thankful for it!

Beneath a soft, overcast sky, an ancient tree stands as a towering sentinel in a lush, misty forest. Writing unit tests for my random number generation library continues to be difficult. My tests are failing because the bias in the distribution exceeds my expectations, but I'm wondering whether I should just repeat the test more times and permit it to exceed expectations some of the time (as long as it does it symmetrically/rarely/etc. My gut tells me that second-order expectations aren't any better than first-order expectations, but another part of me disagrees.
Thinking more as I write this (writing is thinking): second-order tests can at least give me better info to work with towards fixing things I think! So maybe I'll invest in them.

I don't think I'm ever going to enjoy gifts.
I can get why people would give them to children. After all, children don't have their own budget. However, I'm talking about occasional gifts, not a new toy every second week, because "we must outcompete the other grandparents". But to adults?
Once I've heard that you should gift people with what they won't buy themselves. Well, that's won't work for me. I'm a minimalist. If I don't need something, I don't want to have it. Unnecessary junk is only emotional burden to me.
I can get why you'd enjoy something handmade. But something people bought? If I need something, I can buy it myself, when I need it. And I definitely don't need people to prove to me that they never cared to learn who I am, and just buy whatever they like or whatever is "fashionable"; which usually means exactly the opposite of what I'd prefer (i.e. something minimalistic). Or even worse, I don't need people manipulating me through gifts.
Sweets? Besides my diabetes, I don't really enjoy expensive shit that people generally buy because it's what's advertised. For the money they waste on it, I'd buy three times as much sweets I'd actually enjoy.
Gift cards? Oh yes, "you aren't supposed to give money, so let's just give the equivalent of money that's actually worth less than money". Actual money? And here we reach the true nonsense; we exchange the same amount of money, so it's just pointless gesture. Unless one of us gives less money…
What I'd really like, as a gift? Maybe that people would finally bother accepting me as who I am. The absolute minimum of caring that I hate consumerism, and not fueling it "for me".

LLMs never make mistakes or hallucinate, as this presupposes they actually know what they’re doing—they don’t: they have no concept of what words mean.
They don’t even deal with language, as they generate chains of big numbers based on statistical correlations.
The resulting transformation into human-readable text is always only a statistical approximation of what a real answer could maybe look like.
By sheer chance sometimes LLMs are even correct (usually for trivial things); however above a certain length of answer it is always wrong.

Recipes are full of directions like “when the top starts to brown” or “when it is firm to the touch but not hard.”
Very often, the thing the directions are taking about is not the actual important trait, but a •proxy• for something important you can’t see directly. Maybe the inside of the bread is fully baked when the top starts to brown. Maybe dangerous bacteria are killed when the quiche is firm to the touch. (I am making this up; don’t @ me about quiche.)
Proxy indicators, heuristics, rules of thumb, call them what you like: they’re essential in cooking.

Content warning: Loss and grief

I keep thinking that I should text a friend of mine, tell him how much I've been writing, tell him I mentioned him in something I wrote. Then I remember he died like 4 years ago.
Edit:
It must have been more like 6 or something now that I'm thinking about it. It was part of the way through the first Trump administration. He would have really appreciated the way Trump is unraveling now. One of the last times we talked he was like... "You know man, You used to play 'Baby, I'm an anarchist' and I'd think... ' don't want to throw a brick through a Starbucks window. I kinda like their coffee sometimes.' But the way things have been going lately, I'm kind of looking around and thinking you might be right. Fuck Starbucks. Where's that brick?"
At least I won the SRV vs the Hendrix version of Voodoo Chile debate. Hendrix is just better.
We used to talk about music, especially punk (and rockabilly, and ska, and 2 tone), and poetry, and beer. He liked hop stupid, but I always thought it didn't have the body to match the hops and I always preferred Racer 5. Of course, this time of year we'd be shifting in to red and stout season, and I'd be excited for Lagunitas Russian Imperial and this year's Bourbon County Stout batch.
He was really big in to Star Wars. He missed all of Andor, which is probably the best thing to have come out since the original 3. But I guess he also missed the new trilogy, so maybe it balances out.
He would have really liked all the good music I've run across in the last few years. He had a music blog for a bit.
Yeah... I don't know why it's hitting me so hard now, other than maybe I never had time to really process it before.

Content warning: re: bitcoin conference report

A panel on bitcoin treasury companies.
Because investment law makes it hard for institutions to buy bitcoin in their funds. You can't own BTC in you tax free ISA. So some companies that do hold bitcoin, notably microstrategy, became proxy investments. If you can't hold BTC you could maybe own a company that owns BTC instead.
Microstrategy started because it's ceo realized it's dollar treasury was being debased by dollar printing. So tried buying BTC instead, with fantastic success.
Copycat companies proliferated. They boomed and then busted. One panelist calls that a grift. A way to memeticly pump share price.
A line can be drawn between profitable companies just storing their profit in bitcoin Vs those raising debt to buy without having a profitable business.
Imagine a world transiting from using seashells for money to using gold coins. A company gathers seashells from investors to buy gold coins, which will do better than sea shells. Trouble is the next step where the company pays back it's investors with... More seashells.
If you own shares in the company, you do not own bitcoin. You'll just get more old fashioned bank money.
Still. It's worked as marketing, more people being convinced BTC has value.
If you do buy a treasury company, check it's bitcoin not "digital assets" including shitcoins.

I think it is fair to say that most well-to-do people would not uproot generational homelands and livelihood to take a chance being an unknown in a foreign landscape, even if one has connections there, and yet, this current migration dwarfs the post-WWII flux. Sure, maybe I myself set out on the horizon in search of (mild) adventure, but I find it hard to believe 4% of humanity are crazy like me.
That alone speaks volumes at how successful we are at governing the planet, assuming, of course, that data matters in the least, which, presently, it does not.

Good Morning #Canada
The list of abandoned towns in PEI is apparently so short that no one has produced any really scary histories. It makes sense being a small island that there isn't enough distance to truly "abandon" a settlement. Maybe a house here or there, perhaps a short street. But that means you are more likely to be living next door to a haunted location. So today, we have a list of ghostly tales from around the island that may, or may not, be myth. Remember, don't go into the old shed with all the sharp farm tools....

saw jimmy cliff once, like 20 years ago, when i was on vacation with my family & he happened to be playing on the island where we were. he came on wayyyy late, maybe even after midnight, following like a half-dozen local reggae acts, & holy shit that voice was right there. so captivating & joyous.

The number of Computer Misuse Act 1990 prosecutions hasn't really risen in the last five years, despite the perception of a rise in "cyber crime". Maybe this indicates a ceiling on the resources allocated to investigate and prosecute, or maybe not.

RE: hachyderm.io/@thomasfuchs/1156
Maybe you think all of this is irrelevant now, who gives a fuck about a media format more than 50 years old?
Well, fun fact, the design of SD cards is referencing the design of floppy disks, and were specifically made thin enough to be used in floppy adapters (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FlashPath).
Yes, they made an adapter to stick your SD card in and read and write it in a standard floppy disk drive; though you would need to install special software to use it (ironically that software probably came on a CD).
Why would they do such a thing? Because there was no (widespread) USB.

So I was pretty enthusiastic about #DNS4EU at first.
Then I've discovered it blocklisted some random pastebin. Well, it happens. I mean, pastebins frequently get into trouble because of people pasting random shit. So I've filed an unblock request. I've suddenly got a mail to confirm registration in some random company's system — I suspect it was related to DNS4EU, but no clear indication. I've ignored it.
Then they've blocklisted my mail provider, for no apparent reason. It's still blocked. I've switched to the "unfiltered" version to be able to access my mail again.
Today I've gotten a mail via my backup MX. My main MX is up. My educated guess is that sysadmins using DNS4EU now get my mail redirected to their "site blocked" server. Isn't that great?
PS. Maybe if more people filed unblock requests for "poczta.ftdl.pl", it would help. It's a non-profit e-mail provider.

I had to switch to the milk crate on the back of the bike today to deliver a large package at work, so no "bike light box" today, but I also need to not do a long ride after work as sunset is at 5:56pm today.
Maybe I'll rig up a temporary bike light at work... we've got all the parts!

Hey Generous Folks -- I wanted to put a message up for 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. #16DaysAgainstGBV #16Days
Rather than an ask for donations, I want to encourage you to find your local spaces in your own community that help women and people of all genders who are fleeing gender based violence or intimate partner violence.
Maybe *you* can raise a few dollars, volunteer at a local space, or help out in other ways. Maybe you've never done that. It might seem scary! I guarantee you, you'll love it. Whether you raise $50 or $500, or nothing at all, by becoming part of it, you'll make a difference
I'm signing up, as I have for a few years now, for another year at Coldest Night of the Year (#IntimatePartnerViolence #Canada #CanPoli #CdnPoli

Content warning: re: bitcoin conference report

Thomas voegtlin talks about nostr spam. It's very censorship resistance means spam can't be stopped by moderators.
One way to stop spam is require proof of work before your client accepts a message. A large difficult hash.
But big hashing machines are more available to spammers than people.
Can't use likes or zaps cuz they can be faked with sybil attacks.
Instead: notaries and proveably burned satoshis.
Your public messages are classified as ham rather than spam if you burn enough money.
Nostr event types to prove it are suggested. Including burning to upvote others messages
Don't think I like deliberately burning the money, and seems to me a web of trust might work without doing that? Pay to post also peanizes there poor.
But it isn't really burned here, it's shaed out to miners to continue a subsidy when the block rewards run out. So paying miners and these notaries rather than really burning. Okay. Maybe better, but still makes messages mostly for the rich?

We were grocery shopping this morning and when got in the checkout line an old geezer (at least as old as us anyway) sidled up and asked if we’d mind if he payed for our groceries. We said we appreciated his offer, but that there were very likely other people who’d be better targets of his generosity. Another old woman was behind us so we suggested maybe she’d take him up on his offer. She did. He does this every day for a couple weeks this time of year. Just buying 1 person’s food.

LLMs don't have physicality, they are (and this is a huge inaccurate stretch) a simulation of how maybe a small part of brains might possibly work in a hugely simplified and abstracted way; an algorithm that is executed on a bunch of graphics cards—the same algorithm could be done manually on paper (with enough time).
Because they're not physical they don't exist.
Therefore there's no epistemology to be had about "do they have sentience or consciousness".
