Would you stop work? Just tell them you’re not coming in until this is over? What would that look like? Would you get fired? Would you still get fired if your whole team or half your division refused to work? If your union was ready to strike over it?
Maybe you can’t stop work. Maybe you’re unemployed. Maybe you’re retired. Maybe you still have people to take care of — from your income, or as part of the job you do. •Think• about it. What •could• you stop, work or otherwise? How could you prepare for that, save now, be ready?

I recorded a bunch years ago & was in bands years ago but haven't recorded much but demos for many years. Some of these are rough. Some more polished. These are me. Maybe that’s alarming to you, but you think we can still coast through it, wait it out. OK. Fine.
Maybe your red line is US troops gunning down civilians. Like Tiananmen Square. Like Iran this past week. That has not happened under the Trump regime yet. That is a horrifying red line — but maybe it is •your• red line.
Wherever it is, I am asking you now, from my home in Minneapolis, to think: what is •your• red line, the place where you think, “This is too much. Normal is gone. Life as I knew it has to stop until this ends.”

Corporate management is chronically •terrible• at measuring (or even noticing, maybe that’s the same thing) costs like this: irritated customers, burnt out employees, a diffuse but deep and persistent emotional shift, ultimately a creeping disengagement with an entire company and maybe its underlying business premise.
The MBA mania for cost-cutting as a panacea intersects poorly with this inability to •recognize• cost. “Cost-cutting” becomes “replacing costs you can see with larger costs you can’t.” mastodon.green/@CiaraNi/116432

One of the biggest current myths is that if democrats win coming midterms and presidential elections everything will be allright and we can return to business as usual with the USA. In my view that is not the case, the political system and society is too broken to be healed that quickly after Trump's destructive presidency. Just went through a code file and replaced "target" with "recipient" in a bunch of docs and variable names, because I had had two senses of "target" and because I want to encourage less-combat-focused thinking among potential devs (which at the moment and for the foreseeable future is just me). Zero changes to code functionality (unless I messed up) and took maybe 30 minutes. Got me thinking about the goal of software development and who would view that time as "wasted".
From a short-sighted "measure user-facing functionality" standpoint there was basically zero progress made. From a "cultivating-code-understanding-entities" perspective, there are both immediate and long-term gains. I got a chance to review the entire file at a high level which improves my understanding of things even if no changes had been made. The changes increase clarity of a lot of documentation, as well as variable naming clarity in code which deals with both senses of "target" which now has clear separation between variables that refer to targets and recipients. If there are any other devs in the future, this will help them a lot. Even if not, by increasing my own development efficacy, the expected values for project-gets-shipped and overall-project-impact just went up. I've also helped myself not introduce the same ambiguity in all my future projects, because I'll remember this time investment, and I've bent the ideological flavor of the protect towards neutral/beneficial interactions between "initiators and recipients" instead of hostile interactions between "initiators and targets".
Overall, well worth the time investment if we consider all the subtler benefits, and not just a very crude measure of user-facing behavior. (Secretly, this is also a post about LLMs.)

Content warning: uspol Colbert TX Talarico furry

James Talarico (D) is a TX House rep, running in the Dem primary (Mar 3) for US Senate (against Jasmine Crockett).
the FCC has an "equal time" rule for political candidates, which traditionally exempted news interviews and talk shows.
current FCC has suggested maybe removing that exception, so Colbert's lawyers denied Talarico as a guest.
so, Colbert did a segment about that, and a youtube-only interview with Talarico, which mentions the furry litterbox thing

Maybe the red line for you is deploying •active duty military• to Minnesota, and not just National Guard. They did that in LA with marines — briefly, just a little, just in the background, little or no confrontation — and that too got smacked down hard.
That one’s a pretty bright red line. Domestic deployment of the military is in fact the origin of the phrase “crossing the Rubicon:” when Julius Caesar led troops across the Rubicon river, leading the troops to invade his own country, that marked the beginning of civil war in Rome, and a death knell for democracy.

I do not get how Python's math.modf works...
Why do I get all the zeros or nines?
4.4 | 4.0 | 0.40000000000000036
4.5 | 4.0 | 0.5
4.6 | 4.0 | 0.5999999999999996
I can fix it with... more math, but maybe I am doing something wrong?

From a recent hike that I haven't yet blogged about - but I thought I'd just like to share it already with you.
The start of the hike wasn't in the snow but on top, there was still a good winter feeling.
Well, I hope you like it. Maybe it was the last winter shooting this season for me ...

A breathtaking alpine scene unfolds in this image, capturing the stunning beauty of a snowy mountain landscape under a clear blue sky. The foreground features a snow-covered path, partially cleared and bordered by high snowbanks, inviting exploration and adventure. The path is flanked by evergreen trees, their branches dusted with snow, adding a touch of natural beauty and depth to the scene.

In the mid-ground, a group of hikers can be seen making their way along the path, adding a sense of sc…

Note I say “change strategy,” not “leave” or “stop.”
Who knows what’s next, but my expectation is for them to switch to things that are less visible, things that don’t look so bad on video. Maybe that means night raids? More likely, I’m guessing it means more rural action, targeting of remote job sites (e.g. farms), nabbing people from prisons, more activity in detention camps that disallow observers, that kind of thing.

It appears that you can resolve most of GrapheneOS's severe performance limitations and tendency to aggressively kill background apps (after like 15 seconds!) by globally disabling "secure app spawning" and per-app disabling the "hardened memory allocator." At that point, however, you're pretty much left with a gimped AOSP that's missing a bunch of core usability functionality yeeted in the name of security, and you might as well install LineageOS. Or maybe Ca…

I’ve felt for a decade like I’m a fool for deploying on either self-managed Linux VMs or (for small projects) free tier Heroku, and now I feel like I was accidentally doing it the smart way the whole time and didn’t know it.
…or maybe I’m still in the familiarity bias phase of learning a new tool?

This is in stark contrast to my brief experiences with Ansible, which gave me the feeling of “oh, this is a lot to learn, but I see where they’re going and it makes sense.”
My last Ansible investigation stalled out trying to set up a clean process for issuing Let’s Encrypt certs, and I maybe need to pick those investigations back up again.

I watch that show 'The Floor' that Rob Lowe hosts, and my only criticism of it is that the contestants never actually fall through any trap doors in the Floor, to their demise. Maybe they'll try that in an upcoming season

It’s hard to convey the current state of things in Minneapolis right now, in part because we ourselves don’t really know. Abductions are •way• down. We’ve seen close to zero of the random, chaotic smash-and-grab kidnappings ICE was perpetrating in Dec and Jan. We still see their vehicles. There are still deportation flights — they •are• still taking people, albeit it in a less visible and maybe more targeted way.
And…
