Would you stop work? Just tell them you’re not coming in until this is over? What would that look like? Would you get fired? Would you still get fired if your whole team or half your division refused to work? If your union was ready to strike over it?
Maybe you can’t stop work. Maybe you’re unemployed. Maybe you’re retired. Maybe you still have people to take care of — from your income, or as part of the job you do. •Think• about it. What •could• you stop, work or otherwise? How could you prepare for that, save now, be ready?

Maybe that’s alarming to you, but you think we can still coast through it, wait it out. OK. Fine.
Maybe your red line is US troops gunning down civilians. Like Tiananmen Square. Like Iran this past week. That has not happened under the Trump regime yet. That is a horrifying red line — but maybe it is •your• red line.
Wherever it is, I am asking you now, from my home in Minneapolis, to think: what is •your• red line, the place where you think, “This is too much. Normal is gone. Life as I knew it has to stop until this ends.”

When you say you need hope about climate change, what do you really need?
Maybe it's proof your actions matter.
Maybe it's permission to want a better future.
Maybe it's feeling less alone.
Your brain treats hope like a prediction. When reality doesn't match, hope breaks.
But agency doesn't break.
Community doesn't break.
Imagination doesn't break.
What if we stopped chasing hope and built something stronger?

Then there are people who are proud of their country and all they ever did was be born there, which wasn’t even their choice really.
Those people are psychopaths.

SNF (Switzerland) restrictions proposed: only 1 concurrent research grant per PI (plus maybe one coop), only 1 proposal per year.
🔥 Hot take (since I'm not at all operating like this currently): I actually think this might be a good idea? It would curb some of the biggest "research mills", where one PI has a huge pyramid scheme underneath them, and might encourage more careful grant proposals, slower science. And might even put more emphasis back into the basic research funding (instead of the grant lotteries)?

So in another dream I just woke up from, I was talking to someone about "the idea problem" (that it's becoming harder to monitize ideas, from a vox article written by an AI cooked reporter).
iheart.com/podcast/105-it-coul
Basically, I was arguing that the majority of inventions target men because patriarchy puts economic control in men's hands. As men have started to help more with childcare, there have been more inventions related to childcare. (I don't have any idea if this is true. Seems legit, but I'm just relating my dream. I think I was also oversimplifying a bit to "men" and "women" because of my audience, but anyway it was a dream.) There's actually more low-hanging fruit, I pointed out, related to making care work easier.
So I argued that the real problem was a failure to invest in research into solving that problem. Today there are all these boondoggles built around killing people. What if, instead of all this government research into killing people, we dumped a ton of money into making it easier to support a household? That would be great for the economy. (Being asleep, I seem to have forgotten that working people need money.)
In the blur of being just awake I started thinking about how you could kickstart the US economy by taking the money from the AI boondoggle and other autonomous murder bots and create something like a program to build robots for housekeepers. You'd still be funding tech with government money, so the same horrible people get paid, but you're now actually solving real problems. It wouldn't even matter if it was a boondoggle, honestly. Just dumping money into something other than murdering people is good enough.
I imagined first if there was a program to fund a robot housecleaner, like robot dog with AI some laundry pickup, that would be provided, free of charge, to help people with children. It would work the same as the military boondoggle where a private company makes the government buy a piece of hardware from them and then also pay them to service it for some number of years. But instead of that hardware sitting around waiting to kill someone, it would be getting brought to people's houses to help them.
Then I thought, hey, you could even boost the economy more if you just had government funding for doulas and housecleaners and paid them a living wage. Hey, you could really kickstart the economy by nationalizing healthcare and including doula support as part of all births. Oh, and you could also just include the optional household help for families with children until the kids turn 18.
None of this is perfect (I don't actually think most of this is possible from any state), but the point is that it's actually wildly easy to figure out all kinds of ways to invest in the economy and monitize ideas as long as you aren't entirely focused on the same old "make money from spying on people and killing them." Funny that. Like they said in the podcast, maybe "finding ideas" isn't the problem.
Hope you enjoyed the weird semi-awake brain dump/rant.

@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io

The thing about ranting about other social networks is: it's not helpful to anyone other than maybe some temporary catharsis.
The way to get people to move off one social network to another one is to be super welcoming and make it easy—not to chastize or judge or gatekeep.
And most importantly do the hard work of recruiting. Go to that other network and convince people there's better places.

Content warning: ICE & resistance

In case anyone was wondering about the relevance of #LandBack in the current moment, via CrimeThinc an article on the Minneapolis resistance states:
"""
The Whipple, a federal building in Fort Snelling on the outskirts of the Minneapolis and St. Paul, has long been a regional headquarters for ICE, having previously housed other federal agencies. The complex is located across the street from a National Guard base, down the road from a military base, and next to the preserved fort itself. The fort sits on the sacred site of the convergence of two rivers. It was one of the earliest sites of colonization in the area; at one time, it was a concentration camp holding native Dakota people.
"""
If at any point in the past you ever felt that maybe Native soverignty was a niche issue, or so far from being realized that other causes were more important or relevant, things like this are a good reminder that that cause: overturning the colonial order, is the *same* cause as any meaningful change from the fascist status quo. Things like a "return to democracy" aren't necessarily bad, but the rot runs to the root of this nation, and any intervention that doesn't go that deep is going to leave us right back in this situation again later on.
The fact that ICE is detaining Native Americans is not at all a mistake given their white supremacist aims.

The Avi Lewis AMA on Reddit this afternoon was interesting. He didn't answer my question, and I'll eventually get over it, but he was swinging for the fences with his ideas. His responses would resonate I think with MastoCanucks as they pretty much call for the government to get more involved in providing real solutions. Including building 1M public homes, tackling U.S. ownership of our media, getting rid of FPTP with electoral reform, guaranteed income programs, publicly owned options for major business categories (banks, grocery, phones, etc). Those big ideas could wake up and excite voters while at the same time facing huge opposition from big businesses and wealthy Canadians who would face a new wealth tax.
I hope he wins the leadership. At the very least he'll push the Liberals to be bolder, and maybe even lead a minority government that could bring some of his ideas to fruition.

Bedroom post-synth-egg-punk maybe? It's great. Catchy and hooky as fuck. The last song is wild- like 80s kinda. Very strange. Dig all of it, been really hooked on it.

It always starts with talk about millionaires and billionaires and ends with a 36% unrealized gains tax on the handful of assets you bought to try and get a stake in the economy and claw your way out of financial insecurity and maybe be able to retire some day. Meanwhile, the unfathomably rich remain forever unfathomably rich. These people are the allies of capital, and creators of a permanently dependent underclass. They do this to ensure there is always a job for them. If they really cared…

Yesterday I hooked up a brand new WD Black 8TB HDD to the 2nd PC, which is running Mint 22. No reaction, which isn't surprising for a blank drive. Opened up Disks, and there it was. Cool. Clicked the 3 vertical dot menu at the top of Disks, chose "Format Disk" and did the quick option which completed in a couple seconds.. and nothing happened.
"Hmm? Ok.." Formatted it again the same way.. still no reaction. Ok maybe I need to DC it and connect it again for it t…

So my car has been complaining I should put some exhaust emissions neutralizing fluid in it. A thing they call AdBlue I believe.
Bought a big 10l drum of the stuff ready to fill up.
But when I look at where I expect to find the hole for filling it, I just find a capped off tube and a warning sticker "See the GM Citreon Berlingo Blaze manual" for the adblue refilling hole.
Only user manual I have is the one telling me to expect it there.
The car was converted for wheelchair access at some point in its life. I think they are referring to the wheelchair-adaption manual, which the seller did not give me.
🤔
Have been looking around the car as much as I can for a couple of hours this morning to no avail. Where have they hidden this hole to fill up adblue?
Maybe it's under the engine or something now and you have to put the thing on stilts to find it?
🤷
Asked my mechanic about it and he says to bring it in on Monday. Gonna be a pain if I have to rip up the floorboards or something every year to refill that.

So far I don't care for how I have activityPub integrated in to #tvmarks. It tried to be a full activityPub app but I think I just want to oauth with mastodon/bluesky and make post updates to the authed account.
I guess maybe this will mess up the idea of being able to reply to a post and it shows up on the website as a comment? I'm not sure, but I'm thinking about it.

Maybe it’s not work but something else in your life that stops. I don’t know…but you do. What in your life allows the country to continue to function normally? What’s a plug that you can personally pull?
Look for that. Think about it. And get yourself ready. Build up your savings now. Build up your psychological readiness now.
And then…

Maybe the red line for you is deploying •active duty military• to Minnesota, and not just National Guard. They did that in LA with marines — briefly, just a little, just in the background, little or no confrontation — and that too got smacked down hard.
That one’s a pretty bright red line. Domestic deployment of the military is in fact the origin of the phrase “crossing the Rubicon:” when Julius Caesar led troops across the Rubicon river, leading the troops to invade his own country, that marked the beginning of civil war in Rome, and a death knell for democracy.

Somehow 2026 feels like all that mandatory cognitive bias awareness training should maybe have been kept going (with regular repeats/refreshers, much like first aid training) instead of being phased out in most places... (not just talking about tech/AI, but there it's especially dire)

Selected a #hiking route for tomorrow.
Just reminded myself to check the avalanche status... Selected another route...
Maybe overcautios - but my route would go over a larger alpine meadow. Even though I'd go via a south flank that is mentioned with less risk - when I'm going alone, I prefer zero risk.

The first time I ever really felt at home, comfortable and safe, was in an anarchist space in Seattle called "The Wildcat." It only existed for a few months, maybe a year, after I found it. Since then I've found similar places here in Amsterdam, and other places.
I want these places to be as comfortable, as much of a refuge, for everyone as they have been for me. Part of that is acknowledging and addressing the things they make physical and organizing spaces hostile.

It’s possible that this is nothing at all, and they’ll be back in full force today. Nobody, and I mean nobody, has suggested that maybe the worst is over.
But we took the days of relative rest anyway. Hmm, “rest” is wrong: mutual aid, food distribution, school observers, people doing laundry for those who can’t go to a laundromat — that continues unabated. But there’s a definite feeling of catching our breath for a moment.

Maybe we should establish a "maintenance.md" practice just like "readme.md" or "LICENSE" where you just clearly outline the amount of maintenance the project/development team are planning to put into the code base and under which conditions.
I have seen that a few times but maybe it should be more of a standard.

This block of wood, of which there are four at the corners of the bed now I've painted them, is very evocative isn't it?
I could glue a thimble atop that and some window-stickers on the side I bet... 🤔
Sheets of 1cmx1cm mirror tiles appear to be available easily. The more ideal 1cmx2xm less common.
Maybe best as a custom sticker?
Needs windows and a banner and maybe a siren light anyway when its done.

For those of you curious - the Nazis downtown are getting absolutely humiliated.
The big anti-Islam protest downtown currently consists of about 8 protesters and hundreds, maybe thousands, of counter protesters. The counter protesters are currently walking/pushing the protesters off of City Hall grounds. True Minnesota hospitality at its best.
Jake Lang [right-winger who organized the event] and a handful of other racists/RW propagandists are surrounded by about 50 cameras and some antifascists chanting him down. A banner the group arrived with has been broken.
Currently has only about 5 supporters, and is being drowned out by counter protesters
The group led by Jake Lang tried to get inside Minneapolis City Hall, but the building is closed, as it is every Saturday.

(This is all gathered from a bunch of different online sources; sorry I can’t link back to all of them, haven’t been keep track properly as I gather, but you can find more primary sources and video, I’m sure)

I’ve felt for a decade like I’m a fool for deploying on either self-managed Linux VMs or (for small projects) free tier Heroku, and now I feel like I was accidentally doing it the smart way the whole time and didn’t know it.

This is in stark contrast to my brief experiences with Ansible, which gave me the feeling of “oh, this is a lot to learn, but I see where they’re going and it makes sense.”
My last Ansible investigation stalled out trying to set up a clean process for issuing Let’s Encrypt certs, and I maybe need to pick those investigations back up again.
