Content warning: Loss and grief

I keep thinking that I should text a friend of mine, tell him how much I've been writing, tell him I mentioned him in something I wrote. Then I remember he died like 4 years ago.
Edit:
It must have been more like 6 or something now that I'm thinking about it. It was part of the way through the first Trump administration. He would have really appreciated the way Trump is unraveling now. One of the last times we talked he was like... "You know man, You used to play 'Baby, I'm an anarchist' and I'd think... ' don't want to throw a brick through a Starbucks window. I kinda like their coffee sometimes.' But the way things have been going lately, I'm kind of looking around and thinking you might be right. Fuck Starbucks. Where's that brick?"
At least I won the SRV vs the Hendrix version of Voodoo Chile debate. Hendrix is just better.
We used to talk about music, especially punk (and rockabilly, and ska, and 2 tone), and poetry, and beer. He liked hop stupid, but I always thought it didn't have the body to match the hops and I always preferred Racer 5. Of course, this time of year we'd be shifting in to red and stout season, and I'd be excited for Lagunitas Russian Imperial and this year's Bourbon County Stout batch.
He was really big in to Star Wars. He missed all of Andor, which is probably the best thing to have come out since the original 3. But I guess he also missed the new trilogy, so maybe it balances out.
He would have really liked all the good music I've run across in the last few years. He had a music blog for a bit.
Yeah... I don't know why it's hitting me so hard now, other than maybe I never had time to really process it before.

Puget Sound marine layer with an extremely well defined edge. Maybe a hundred feet high, and in about the same horizontal distance you go from pea soup to a bright sunny day with clear blue skies

View from the top deck of a large boat looking over a green railing with an orange life ring mounted to it.

The sky is clear blue with very few clouds but a dense fog bank obscures the water and shoreline to the right of the frame
Looking to the left, another low lying fog bank covers the water but taller hills on the shore, lined with tall pine trees, are poking out of the top of the fog showing it's very low to the water

I do like #NextCloud but sometimes it can drive me crazy. For example, fresh update, hundreds of errors with astoundingly unhelpful messages. Consider:
chmod(): Operation not permitted at /var/www/nextcloud/apps/recognize/lib/Migration/InstallDeps.php#169
ok, so what do we find at line 169? a call to chmod() on presumably a filename, wrapped in an exception Catch.
I realize this is very much non-trivial software with oodles of hours of difficult work by so many kind people, but, really, how much effort would it have been to include the errant target FILENAME in the exception message?
Similarly, a deprecation warning is, by definition, a Warning, not an error.
None of this affects my using Nextcloud, but it does really clutter the log and who knows, maybe some of these Errors are actually important?

SNF (Switzerland) restrictions proposed: only 1 concurrent research grant per PI (plus maybe one coop), only 1 proposal per year.
🔥 Hot take (since I'm not at all operating like this currently): I actually think this might be a good idea? It would curb some of the biggest "research mills", where one PI has a huge pyramid scheme underneath them, and might encourage more careful grant proposals, slower science. And might even put more emphasis back into the basic research funding (instead of the grant lotteries)?

Very often, the thing the directions are taking about is not the actual important trait, but a •proxy• for something important you can’t see directly. Maybe the inside of the bread is fully baked when the top starts to brown. Maybe dangerous bacteria are killed when the quiche is firm to the touch. (I am making this up; don’t @ me about quiche.)

So in another dream I just woke up from, I was talking to someone about "the idea problem" (that it's becoming harder to monitize ideas, from a vox article written by an AI cooked reporter).
iheart.com/podcast/105-it-coul
Basically, I was arguing that the majority of inventions target men because patriarchy puts economic control in men's hands. As men have started to help more with childcare, there have been more inventions related to childcare. (I don't have any idea if this is true. Seems legit, but I'm just relating my dream. I think I was also oversimplifying a bit to "men" and "women" because of my audience, but anyway it was a dream.) There's actually more low-hanging fruit, I pointed out, related to making care work easier.
So I argued that the real problem was a failure to invest in research into solving that problem. Today there are all these boondoggles built around killing people. What if, instead of all this government research into killing people, we dumped a ton of money into making it easier to support a household? That would be great for the economy. (Being asleep, I seem to have forgotten that working people need money.)
In the blur of being just awake I started thinking about how you could kickstart the US economy by taking the money from the AI boondoggle and other autonomous murder bots and create something like a program to build robots for housekeepers. You'd still be funding tech with government money, so the same horrible people get paid, but you're now actually solving real problems. It wouldn't even matter if it was a boondoggle, honestly. Just dumping money into something other than murdering people is good enough.
I imagined first if there was a program to fund a robot housecleaner, like robot dog with AI some laundry pickup, that would be provided, free of charge, to help people with children. It would work the same as the military boondoggle where a private company makes the government buy a piece of hardware from them and then also pay them to service it for some number of years. But instead of that hardware sitting around waiting to kill someone, it would be getting brought to people's houses to help them.
Then I thought, hey, you could even boost the economy more if you just had government funding for doulas and housecleaners and paid them a living wage. Hey, you could really kickstart the economy by nationalizing healthcare and including doula support as part of all births. Oh, and you could also just include the optional household help for families with children until the kids turn 18.
None of this is perfect (I don't actually think most of this is possible from any state), but the point is that it's actually wildly easy to figure out all kinds of ways to invest in the economy and monitize ideas as long as you aren't entirely focused on the same old "make money from spying on people and killing them." Funny that. Like they said in the podcast, maybe "finding ideas" isn't the problem.
Hope you enjoyed the weird semi-awake brain dump/rant.

Some folks in the replies seem a bit confused about what that 3.5% counts, conflating it with polling or election results: “What if 3.5% support the authoritarian too? Who wins then??”
That study was specifically looking at (1) ongoing political engagement (2) in opposition to an authoritarian slide. It’s •not• a poll. It’s •not• an election. It’s •not• a popularity contest. It’s about how much active counter-engagement an authoritarian takeover can withstand.
If 3.5% of the population is actually •actively• engaged in opposition work on an •ongoing• basis, then that likely indicates a much broader base of less active and more intermittently engaged opposition — like maybe an order of magnitude larger! Who knows! The golden brown on top of the bread is a decent indicator of what’s happening inside.

While I maybe a Linux Penguin, It's worth pointing out there are plenty of other free OSs which share many of the user space parts (e.g. the desktop) - and some very different; So, give FreeBSD a go once in a while, Then there are things like FreeDOS, embedded OSs, and ReactOS which can run Windows software, or lots of other things to play with. Give some a go:

Oh, wait, maybe the driver drove the car into the building? The car wasn't an independent actor?

Behind the blue bin is a column in green marble veneer in front of the glass entryway, which faces the corner. A local cancer institute has a giant inflatable colon, maybe 3m in diameter and 6m long, set up at a community event.
Where does one even go to make such a thing? I feel like there's a single digit number of companies globally that specialize in making custom printed/sculpted inflatable props like this. It's certainly not something you'd buy COTS.
Like anybody who makes bouncy castles *could* but I suspect most such companies just do standard designs

#NowPlaying the new LP 'Slumber Behind Rotten Walls' by Toulouse, France's NOHZ. This is some intense, raucous, feedbacky hardcore punk, and there are hooks in there- along with some black metal maybe. But this is firmly punk, with some depraved, raw vocals. A great listen.

IDK if you can’t make games without making unethical shortcuts (labor exploitation, never-ending crunch, AI plagiarism, etc.) because otherwise you’d need “300 people and 7 years”, maybe work on making games that are better?
A lot of the really big games of the last decades were initially made by just a few people with really great basic game loops.

So my car has been complaining I should put some exhaust emissions neutralizing fluid in it. A thing they call AdBlue I believe.
Bought a big 10l drum of the stuff ready to fill up.
But when I look at where I expect to find the hole for filling it, I just find a capped off tube and a warning sticker "See the GM Citreon Berlingo Blaze manual" for the adblue refilling hole.
Only user manual I have is the one telling me to expect it there.
The car was converted for wheelchair access at some point in its life. I think they are referring to the wheelchair-adaption manual, which the seller did not give me.
🤔
Have been looking around the car as much as I can for a couple of hours this morning to no avail. Where have they hidden this hole to fill up adblue?
Maybe it's under the engine or something now and you have to put the thing on stilts to find it?
🤷
Asked my mechanic about it and he says to bring it in on Monday. Gonna be a pain if I have to rip up the floorboards or something every year to refill that.

I've read one prediction that suggests Trump says he is in favor of releasing the Epstein files but something will prevent it, maybe something about leaking information about "ongoing investigations" and so they will not be released and he then gets to say "I was all for releasing them!"... But it was also pointed out that he could just order the release to happen and doesn't need the house or senate to actually vote on it.

#NowPlaying another great punk LP, this one is from 2018, the self-titled debut record 'Color TV' by Minnesota's COLOR TV. There's great hooky guitar lines all over this one. Seriously, though, USians, before you tell someone from the Middle East to “check your privilege”, why don’t you open up your US passport, have a good look at it, and then check your own goddamn privilege before putting your whole foot in your mouth publicly? Maybe also look up intersectionality while you’re at it and realise that it’s not a fucking pissing contest. I’ll take lessons in privilege from you when every last one of you conscientiously objects to bombing the shit out of our side …
