One of the things that made organizing a lot easier with the GDC was a thing called "GDC in a box." It was a zip file with all kinds of resources. There was a directory structure, templates for all kinds of things like meetings and paperwork you had to file (for legal reasons) and "read me" files.
We had all kinds of support. There were people you could talk to who had been there. There were people you could call to walk through legal paperwork (taxes). Centralized orgs are vulnerable and easy to infiltrate. They're easy for states to shut down. But there are benefits to org structures.
I think it's possible to have the type of support we had with the GDC, but without the politics of an org (even the IWW). I hope this most recent essay has some of the same properties. I hope that it makes building something new, something no one has really imagined before, easier.
This whole project is something a bit different. It's a collective vision and collective project, from the ground up. Some of it has felt like a brain dump, just getting things that have been swimming around in my head down somewhere. But I hope this feels more like an invitation.
Everything thus far written is all useless unless people do things with it. Only from that point does it become a thing that lives, a thing with its own consciousness that can't be controlled by any individual human.
Tech billionaire cultists want to bring a new era of humanity with AGI. That is definitely not possible with LLMs, and may not be possible at all. But there is a super intelligence that is possible, though it's been constrained by capitalism: collective human intelligence.
The grand vision of the tech dystopians is that of the ultimate slave that can then enslave all humans on their behalf. I think we can build a humanity that can liberate itself from their grasp, crush their vision, and build for itself a world in which people will never be enslaved again. Not only do I think it's possible, I think it's necessary. I think there are only two choices: collective liberation or death.
And that's what I plan to write about next time to wrap this whole project up. Today things often feel impossible. But people talked about the Middle Ages as though they were the end of the world, and then everything changed in unimaginable ways. Everything can, and will, change again.
"The profit motive often is in conflict with the aims of art. We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings."

at the moment, everyone having a phone camera is good evidence for reality. you can have multiple angles of the same moment and check them for consistency. it's hard to synthesize that, because gen-AI is bad at continuity.
I expect this to change within 5y. it's expensive to get continuity in high-res video of a 3d scene, but it's achievable.
people will keep trying prompt-to-video, but that will never work as well as prompt-to-scene-file-to-renderer.

Sometimes hacking a computer means a whole different thing...
In this use, I'm actually hacking (with a hacksaw) the case apart to add an I/O shield (custom made) so I can fit an older motherboard that was not designed for this case.
And thank you to Gateway for making me do this by not using a removable shield and instead stamping every hole they needed and covering them with a sticker if they weren't on this model. 🤦‍♂️

four 3d printer I/O shields each with slightly better layout and options. the top is the earliest and has holes that are too small (the DB9 and DB25 are comically small). the next has the right sized DB9 and DB25 cutouts, but there is still a problem with the clearance on the PS/2 ports. the third one would have worked, but I wanted to shift the PS/2 ports half a millimeter and add labels for the three DB ports.
the back of a gateway 2000 G3 case with a large rectangle jacked out where the IO shield should go.
the back of a Gateway 2000 G3 case with the completed I/O shield and motherboard installed. everything lines up and fits.
my assorted implements of destruction used to create the hole for the I/O shield. sitting on top of an old table cloth covered in small pieces of metal are: a round file, a triangle file, a pair of snips, a hacksaw, and a pair of needle nose pliers.

When #teaching #Rstats / #statistics courses, I (and several colleagues of mine) made the experience that it is indeed pretty hard for a lot of students to cope with the file system on their computer. They have questions like: How do I know the "path" of a file? How do I control in which directory something is saved? WHY DO I NEED THIS?!?
I don't want to make fun of these students because I know that this could be because operating systems are increasingly obscuring file/directory systems from their users.
But if I want to teach students to use a scripting/ #programming language independently, that's a real problem!
So my questions to you are: Do you have the same impression when teaching? And if so: How do you deal with this from a teaching perspective? To be honest, I don't want to use precious course time to teach the absolute basics of computers' file systems in the first session(s).

If Affinity really cares about the creatives, they (& all other design companies, hopefully Adobe too?) should have form a group to create a file format standard. As long as the design format is proprietary, there's not much "freedom" here, even if the software is free, paid-once or subscription-based.
Sketch is actually almost there, at least for UI/vector designs (

Here's a great use of AI text-to-speech generation: preparing for a live pitch.
Instead of reading your pitch a hundred times so you can edit it for time, use ElevenLabs.
1. Create an account
2. Find a voice that matches your own cadence
3. Paste your script and have it generate the pitch
You'll immediately see how long the audio file is and can adjust your script for length.
Then you can spend your time **rehearsing** instead of editing.

Been in-depth studying the PDF file format spec for the past few days... it's mind boggling that this format with its capacity for monstrous complexity managed to become the de-facto standard for modern documents. So many questionable decisions & undue flexibility in there (in the wrong places) making even a simple task of reliable metadata extraction (for example) incredibly hard... I understand and value flexibility, but not at this cost! Guess I will have to keep on using one of t…

'The defense said it expected to file 2 motions, one to dismiss because Halligan, the only prosecutor to sign the indictment, wasn’t properly appointed to office, so the indictment is fatally flawed (& can’t be fixed b/c the statute of limitations has run). This motion, which will hinge on federal vacancy appointment law, might ironically be based on a memo Justice Alito wrote when he was in DOJ’s Office of Legal Counsel.'

do you know whether this "may" is actually a "shall" or not? does this differ per-OS?

If a process uses open(2) (or similar) to obtain more than one
file descriptor for the same file, these file descriptors are

Cars, like everything else now, are mostly made to be data collection devices. You can't collect data on every possible thing without lots of chips, man. Get with the program. How is the AI going to simulate us once it wipes us out if it doesn't collect every possible datapoint it can now? Come on.
