Talking about banks, let me tell you a short story of my interactions with Idea Bank (PL), which — as far as I can see — went bankrupt already (yay).
A long time ago, I moved my account to this bank, because it had a good offer for microcompanies. Later on, I moved somewhere else, for reasons I don't remember, but I didn't regret it. I've kept the old account for a while but then decided to close it as a "cleanup". So I went to the branch, and with the help of the consultant (or however these people are called there), filed a termination. So far, so good.
Before the obligatory notice period, I got mail that they are changing the terms and the accounts will no longer be free. They also made it very clear that since they're dealing with a company, consumer rights don't apply, I can't terminate immediate because of terms changing, and of course the new (paid) terms start applying faster than the usual notice period. I thought: good, that I filed my termination earlier.
A few days past the notice period, I decided to check that everything went fine. So I'm trying to sign in… and my account is still open! I call the damned helpline, and what do I learn? That my termination has been rejected because "they don't have my "signature specimen card".
Let me make this clear: I went to the branch in person, the consultant supposedly confirmed everything's fine, but it turned out it weren't, and they even didn't bother informing it about the rejection.
So back to the branch, fill the "signature specimen card", update the ID card while at it, another termination, and a complaint about the prior service while at it. Do I have to point out how awful it is that in order to make them stop processing my personal data, I have to actually provide more personal data (new ID)?
Finally, they closed the account, sent a reply via postal mail, and didn't charge anything for the time the new regulations applied. At least that.
I would wholeheartedly advise against that #bank, only that it seems that it's already gone.
It’s rare you get a chance to ask a Minister of a government a question (even indirectly through a radio show).
I'm happy I got that chance last Thursday. You can listen below. (Start from 2:36 if you'd like to skip some).
The BC Minister of Post-Secondary says a lot of platitudes and half-truths about increases in ‘operating grants’ and capital funding. Fact is: School is more expensive than ever and institutions and students are struggling.

Abstract: We present a new determination of the evolving galaxy UV luminosity function (LF) over the redshift range $8.5<15.5$ using a combination of several major Cycle-1 JWST imaging programmes - PRIMER, JADES and NGDEEP. This multi-field approach yields a total of $\simeq370$ sq. arcmin of JWST/NIRCam imaging, reaching (5-$\sigma$) depths of $\simeq30$ AB mag in the deepest regions. We select a sample of 2548 galaxies with a significant probability of lying at high redshift ($p(z>8.5)>0.05$) to undertake a statistical calculation of the evolving UV LF. Our new measurements span $\simeq4$ magnitudes in UV luminosity at $z=9-12.5$, placing new constraints on both the shape and evolution of the LF at early times. We fit our observational data-points with a double-power law (DPL) function and explore the evolution of the DPL parameters. Our UV LF measurements yield a new estimate of the early evolution of cosmic star-formation rate density ($\rho_{\rm{SFR}}$) which confirms the gradual, log-linear decline deduced from early JWST studies, at least out to $z \simeq 12$. Finally we show that the observed early evolution of the galaxy UV LF (and $\rho_{\rm{SFR}}$) can be reproduced in a ${\rm \Lambda}$CDM Universe, with no change in dust properties or star-formation efficiency required out to $z \simeq 12$. Instead, we show that a progressive trend towards younger stellar population ages can reproduce the observations, and we show that the typical ages required at $z \simeq$ 8, 9, 10, and 11 all converge on a time $\simeq 380-330$ Myr after the Big Bang, indicative of a rapid emergence of early galaxies at $z \simeq 12 - 13$. This is consistent with the first indications of a steeper drop-off in the galaxy population we find beyond $z \simeq 13$, possibly reflecting the rapid evolution of the halo mass function at earlier times.
I'm a big fan of The Three-Body Problem novels and look forward to the NetFlix series. When I read the books, I really enjoyed a great sci-fi story from a Chinese perspective. Liu Cixin was able to make the story accessible and amazing to this lonely American.

Who here is playing this new game, Gray Zone Warfare?
I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this game and what you like and don't like.
I've always wanted to give Escape From Tarkov a try, but everyone says it's a pretty complex game. Most people are saying this is very similar, but more for the casual player and a lot easier to learn.
Sound off in the comments below with your thoughts as I'm debating if I want to give it a try or not.

#RustLang is the perfect language for the "move fast, break things" era. No, I'm not implying it encourages you to break stuff. All I'm saying is that all these modern languages are specifically designed for that mindset. They optimize for corporate greed — nicely dressed as "valuing developer's time".
Developers aren't supposed to slow down and think things over. They should finish feature after feature, project after project, profit after profit. When things break, that's bad for profit. However, putting an effort to prevent things from breaking is not cost-effective.
People love to point out memory safety problems with C. However, there are two other important problems affecting C libraries — ABI and API stability. An uncontrolled ABI breakage means that existing programs suddenly breaks. An uncontrolled API breakage means that programs don't build anymore. Combine both and you're in a tight fit.
There are reasonably good solutions to both these problems. However, they require conscious effort, they require thinking — and that is costly. There are also cheap workarounds. If you link libraries statically, you don't need to worry about their ABI changes. If you vendor dependencies, you don't even need to worry about API changes. That's much cheaper for the company — though in reality, it just moves the burden down the line, to distribution developers and users, who end up fighting old, broken or even vulnerable vendored dependencies.
The problem with Rust and #Cargo is that it embraces these hacks into glorified 20M executables. Everything is linked statically, everything is vendored. You can move fast without actually breaking things — at least for the significant majority of users. To the minority, you always have the usual excuse — "we're sorry, we're just volunteers, we can't spend more energy on this, and you should get newer hardware anyway". Not that doing things better wouldn't benefit all users.
