Under Randy Clarke, WMATA has cut the end-to-end travel time on the Metro Red Line by 8 minutes. This is a 68 minute trip, so it's a gain in efficiency of over 10% on top of faster trips for riders.
This is a combination of automated train operation (with doors closing sooner), raising the speed limit back to the original design of 75 mph, and I imagine other fixes.

Europe is exporting military dogs—used as weapons by Israel's elite forces. These dogs have been linked to civilian injuries and deaths, including children and people with disabilities. Doors forced open in the middle of the night, piercing cries for help, fangs sunk mercilessly into the flesh of victims. Children are torn from their mothers' arms, women scream for help, men collapse in agony, while apathetic soldiers just laugh as dogs tear bodies apart indiscriminately.

Should I break in? I mean I think this bicycle is being held against it's will and wants to taste the open road.

An old brick archway with a glass paned doors nestled into a cobblestone walkway. Framed inside is a penny farthing bicycle (a classic style of bike with a massive front wheel and a tiny rear one). It's positioned in front of a dark gray curtain, to hide whatever is behind it. To the left, there is a rustic looking lantern. Just in front is a set of lights, presumably to light it up at night. A small sign on the glass doors warns "ALARM".

Dear Computer History people: I'm searching for books covering the history of the MIT Media Lab.The only one I found so far is "The Media Lab" by Stewart Brand, released in 1988. So a bit dated. Are you aware of other titles, which also cover the time AFTER 1988? It might be titles on other subjects but with a significant amount on the MIT Media Lab.

The #Chicago Tribune Tower 100 year anniversary. Excerpt from Sunday's Tribune story.

The exterior of the Chicago Tribune Tower in the late 1920s.

CHICAGO TRIBUNE HISTORICAL PHOTO
Tribune Tower debuted 100 years ago, ushering in the glory days of the city's 'Magnificent Mile'

On July 6, 1925, the Tribune opened the doors of Tribune Tower to the public. Perhaps spurred by the paper's hype of its own building, an estimated 20,000 people showed up, a story reported the next day.

It's June, so I've got my Javastation off the shelf for the first time in a couple of decades. This is a Javastation Krups, with 100MHz sparc, sold as a diskless workstation. I never realised it had a PPP ROM boot in! Anyway, I should get on and set up networking and a boot server.
(Note: the plastic on the clips on the doors is fragile, 2 just pinged off on me)
#retrocomputing

A screenshot of the 'JavaOS PPP dialer' - it's got a Motif style widgetry, a Sun purpley theme, a Java logo in the corner and some options and progress bar.
A screenshot, showing a Java logo in the corner, 'JavaStation' in big at the top and an icon that looks like a SIMM, probably indicating ROM boot.
The side of a JavaStation Krups, it's shape is ...odd. Quite smooth, ovalish in cross section, on the side is a Java logo, and there's another on the top, It's mostly grey with two wings at the back in Purple and some cooling vents inbetween.
The back of a Sun Javastation Krups with it's doors open, showing the audio jacks, Mini DINs for power, mouse and keyboard, LAN and VGA.

One of the houses a few doors away has got a young person living there who seems to have bought himself a two-stroke motorbike with not much of an exhaust pipe.
And now that the weather's a bit warmer and I have the windows open when I work from home, I hear the BRRAAPPPP! BRRAPPPPPPPPPP!!! of him revving the bike every time he pops out down the shops or to see his mates or whatever.

Welp, that’s a first: I had to actually break the glass in case of fire.
This evening, I used a fire extinguisher on a brush fire that had started near a house just three doors down from our beach rental. The owners weren’t home, and if it hadn’t been stopped, it easily could’ve taken the house with it.
Neighbors came running, the kids were thrilled by the whole thing, and I’m still kind of buzzing.

Take the right seat on the train, and you have two jobs already:
1. Telling people that the toilet is occupied, because the lock isn't reliable.
2. Telling people that exterior doors are broken, because they don't see the warning pasted on the door.

Lots of things going wrong now with flight test nine of the #Starship: first the payload doors didn't open and dummy satellites couldn't be deployed, then it sprung a leak, attitude control has been lost and the reentry in about 10 minutes will be at a radom angle and lead to a likely early loss of the vehicle. Which is still sending live video of its crazy ride over the Indian Ocean, though, thanks to Starlink ...

Took the new #nightjet yesterday from Vienna > Amersfoort. Very new train, but still with a number of teething issues. An on-board technician tried to solve e.g. sliding doors that wouldn’t open. Some problems couldn’t be fixed (one cabin’s keycard didn’t work, person was moved to a free cabin, my neighbour’s cabin wouldn’t properly lock).
Huge delay (170 minutes) - that I partly expect…

Tech companies think that, if they make products *look* futuristic, you will think that they are actually innovating. “What’s happening in NYC is a loud message to those in the Dem establishment who still cling to old politics, recite focus-grouped talking points, and are too afraid to say what needs to be said.” It was a campaign that triangulated ground game, digital style and policy substance. Content warning: re: Doctor Who - Interstellar Song Contest
:tardis:

So, we have a song-contest blighted by a genocidal unethical corporate sponsor, with the remnants of the wiped-out race threatening a revenge genocide of their own.
Unusually political with the allegory there then.
Great looking scene when the roof was blown open, thousands of people all being sucked off! Looked great, but what a body count?! And the Doctor and his Tardis both sucked off too! He's frozen.
"The Mavity Shell is still open." Lol. Still doing that then.
Susan is here! His granddaughter. Just in visions though, not actually really there. She looks older now. Sixty years on. She's like 80 years old now. "Find me" she says. Not this season though I suspect.
I liked him using the Confetti Cannon to fly though space. Peter Davidson used a cricket ball to bounce off a space ship when he was stranded in outer space. And Peter never froze.
Also a great prat-fall after landing, pointing and gasping and then just toppling.
Silly muppets-aliens song was fab.
Anti-gambling fraud laws prevent calling for help. Brilliant.
Expected that hair to be hiding a set of horns, not that she'd have cut them off.
The Doctor has ice in his heart now, more angry than we've seen Nchuti's Doctor. Trillions gonna die, Belinda dead, Tardis lost. Almost genocidal himself. Certainly vengeful. Timelord victorious.
Belinda is scared too: "If he's angry, this whole world is going to shake", but it ain't a world is it? It's a space station. Much easier to shake 😝
Explosion breaking through the Tardis doors near the end is quite a cliff hanger, but not even actually the end.
Because Mrs Flood is the Rani, finally! Every mystery character has had the fans hoping it's the Rani for years. Like it never being Lupus for the other Doctor: Doctor House. Finally it is Lupus, I mean the Rani.
Not sure I like this bi-generation again though. It's supposed to be rare, but now it feels like it's every time. Still, at least it keeps Miss Flood there as Rani's lackey.
Who actually was the Rani again?
She's from the first McCoy episode: she tries to build a time control device by gathering geniuses from time and blowing up a planet. Pretends to be Mel, the Doctor's companion at the time, to fool McCoy into hhelping. So interesting that her new regeneration looks a little like Belinda. 🤨🤔
I figured Mrs Flood was just Missy, the female Master. But then The Rani was always just a female version of The Master before Transsexual Regeneration was a thing anyway.
Well, just the double finale left then. Exciting.
