The author asks, 'what if the tools we use shape our culture?' Of course it does. Look at cars; they've made us far more selfish, disconnected, and destructive. They've shaped our entire cities, and our entire culture.

I thought that Van Horn Texas was going to be one of those dreary west Texas towns of 1900 people. Well, it kinda looks like that.
However, we had a very nice dinner at the 1930's era El Capitan Hotel - I had a pork chop with a spectacularly good chipolte/raspberry glaze. Because of the eclipse traffic they ran out of food and the staff was at wits end. But all in all it was a good meal, good place, and very enjoyable.

I started with the #Linux desktop app thinking, like pCloud, it was remote mount, but it appears to be only /replicated/ to my Nextcloud, not a good place to put 2TB of documents!

The second best level is definitely "Boomtown", the first in the cowboy/western campaign.
The best bit in that is where you whip the one armoured guy, then tripple shoot the baddies in the corner, as it's singing "This ain't no place for no hero, go home" and then the four armoured ones that you pistol whip on the drums, Bang, bang, bang, bang.
I haven't made it through that one without losing my Armour. Being hit not even once is the key really to chart-topping.
I think probably number three is the prequel in that series "fist fight" with lots of pistol whipping.
Then there's a big gulf before the rest. They're all cool, but none of them are really *that* cool, as cool as the "go home, bang bang bang smash"
Anyone seen any good user-submitted ones?
Seems like it's been ages since a new level. Perhaps we'll get some for Easter. That'd be good. Bunny shooting.

I've been reading "On Green” (joecarlsmith.com/2024/03/21/on) and its following article, “On Attunement” with some interest today. I am uninterested in the ways he is focused on “AGI”, but that might actually be part of what he's saying and missing.
They talk about the philosophy of green in the "magic the gathering" sense, which has five core modes of things, and being a game, designed to balance. It's an attractive system and not without merit as a philosophical labeling system. In short: white, moral; blue, knowledge and rationality; red, passion and desire; black, power and achievement. And green. Green is the subject they can't identify clearly.
I don't think they really understand green. (They come from a very rationalist place, and that's not a good mode to understand Green)
Green is the domain of systems thinking and of ecology. It's one of flexible boundaries and hierarchies that vanish when you look at them for long. They talk about philosophical agents and try to fit a green philosophical stance into that framework, but it misses: the very idea of a self is nebulous in a green philosophy. Yes, it obviously exists, we are all separate from each other. But also we are inseparable from each other. Green is a philosophy of relationality and multiple perspectives and ever shifting viewpoints. It's not just yin, passive, permissive, but holistic. It's not that it lets the Other in, it's that it actively is in relation with the Other. The other is the self, the self is the other.
The essays also label green as conservative, and this is not quite true. It is not about being slow or regressive or traditional, but about being whole. They can't quite see that green's willingness to accept death and pain as things that happen and also its strong preservationist stance are not opposed to each other. It seems incoherent, but it's not: death and pain are things that happen to living parts of an ecosystem. They matter, but so too does the whole matter. Where so many blue rationalists see statistical and demographic counts of deaths and "sentient beings harmed”, green sees a whole ecosystem where some of that is deeply natural. It's unnatural, ecosystem-harming deaths that are disasters in the green philosophy. Wholesale extinctions. Protracted, painful deaths, as much for the wound they cause outside the individual as the individual suffering as well. But we all come to an end, and to change that wholesale would end so many kinds of relationship, so many things.
Green revels in the illegible, the incomplete, and the connected. It's easy to be green-blind, to ignore the subtle systemic effects. So many of us want simple cause and effect, rather than action and plurality of reactions.
Green's ability to embrace the illegible lets it deal with Red chaos; its resilience tempers red passion. It can ally with White philosophies into a pastoral, conservative, moralistic framework. It ends up at odds with the rationalist Blue and the power-hungry Black, because they drive disequilibrium, but more than just transition to new stable ecologies, they drive systems permanently out of stability, destroying relationships in their path. When confronted with this, they will deny it because the objects are still there. Preserved. Catalogued. Legible and accounted for. Perhaps used instrumentally. Perhaps wrecked for some "greater purpose” but only acknowledged as objects. The relationships between things remain illegible.

Wondering if this is a good place for an LLM code extruder? “Write unit tests that cover as many possible lines of code.” You wouldn’t get *smart* unit tests, but even dumb coverage is immensely better than none. About life and feelings, gloomy and private
The feelings we get from the activities we do could be classified as neutral, positive and negative.
Let's take developing #Gentoo as an example. It's something that makes me happy — but you can't (or at least I can't) just get the happiness and reject everything else. Most of the Gentoo work is basically neutral, even bland — a duty that takes a lot of time and effort, and probably a little of your health. It's statistically probable that you're going to get some positive feelings out of it — the joy of success, satisfaction, appreciation, awareness that you've done something good. But you also get negative feelings — from failures, frustration, negative interactions.
My hiking trips are like that too. My family believes that "I do it for pleasure" — but it's a harmful oversimplification and it only tells me that they even aren't trying to understand me. In fact, it's mostly a necessity, a way of solving specific problems that works for me — halting diabetes-related problems, coping with emotions. Of course there's a positive side to it — good mood, energy to survive another day, something the joy of visiting a new place, seeing something beautiful, finding a solution to a vexatious problem, positive interactions with people. But there are also negative feelings — anger and sadness from failure, stress from problems, negative contacts with people. Sometimes you end up slowly charging your social battery for a whole week, just to have one person destroy it all.
If you think about it, life's something like that. It's mostly a bland effort to survive every following day, sometimes interspersed with positive or negative moments.

"As a leading craft beer gastropub, a third of our sales might come from delivery... the entire experience of The Monk’s Kettle has now been transformed from a welcoming place where you hang out with friends in a fun atmosphere…to eating a lukewarm burger and fries in your apartment."
a sad statement on what's happened to community, culture and public space in San Francisco.

The story of how Verne met his third (and cu…

We met in a bar -- and I hasten to add it was an upscale bar in Dallas. It was a place called Arthur's. I walked in after I did the 10 o'clock news (at WFAA-TV in Dallas) and I just didn't want to go home. Nancy and her date were at the bar and her date recognized me from local television and invited me over to have a drink. He introduced me to his date and her name was Nancy Miller. It was their first date, a blind date. So we sat and chatted and her date, Raymond Willie, said to me, "Listen, …
He looked at Nancy and asked her, "What are you doing Thursday night?" She said, "Nothing." He said, "Good, you'll be my date and we'll fix Verne up with this schoolteacher friend of mine and we'll go to dinner." Meanwhile, I'm looking at Nancy thinking she is the prettiest thing I have ever seen in my life. So, Raymond Sfinally left to take care of his business and I asked Nancy, "So, how involved are you with Raymond? She said, "Oh, this is our first date and it's a blind date." So I said, "W…

Food for thought. Lame but 🤷🏻‍♂️.
#Malaysia—a food paradise. Love the streets.
Before our lunar new year visit, I read about the country and how it outplayed #Vietnam re chips. The infrastructure: on another level. The poverty: not so much?

Food from every corner, and beer vendors in the middle. A colourful local market with lots of people sitting around many small tables. Rather simple setup, bright lights, a few red new year lanterns hanging from the roof
There's even a Vietnamese pho place, beef scoop, what else. (Only a handful of the 20 shops have veg options). This image is shot through a chair that works as a frame

Social housing, I suppose, a yellow high building with 20-something stories, a few ACs and TV antennas attached. Not in good shape

Good morning Stockholm. Slept well in the SJ WL4 first class sleeping-car, and the en-suite shower worked fine. We already arrived, ten minutes ahead of schedule, but I can remain in the train for a while still, waiting for the breakfast place to open. Then quickly to the harbour for ship to Turku/Åbo. #Interrail

Good article by UCLA Prof David Myers on last night's attack on the UCLA Gaza Solidarity Encampment.
"Instead, UCLA now finds itself in a far more vulnerable place. The attack last night was pure anarchy in which violent thugs were given free rein, seemingly with the tacit support of law enforcement. It placed scores of anti-war demonstrators in the encampment in direct and serious danger.
Moreover, the actions last night do absolutely nothing to assure the security and well-being of Jewish students, staff or faculty — a number of whom have participated in or support the protests. These actions risk lending the false impression that the outside agitators are representative of Jewish interests on campus, which can further inflame tensions between student groups. "

Good old “child is sick and keeps throwing up” sleep cycle.

Sleep tracking graph for March 17, 2024, showing periods of being awake (red), REM sleep (light blue), core sleep (dark blue), and deep sleep (purple) between 22:00 and 07:00. The graph indicates multiple awakenings, consistent core sleep, scattered REM stages, and a brief deep sleep period around 2:00.

Wait, what? I'm supposed to post photos of green cars on St. Patrick's day? ☘️
In that case, can I present my 1961 Series IIA Land Rover.
It currently is painted in *more* than 40 shades of green, with the added bonus that it lives just outside #Downpatrick (said to be the burial place of the man himself) Northern Ireland.

A front three quarters view of a 1961 Series IIA Land Rover. The bulkhead, bonnet, doors, wing fronts and rear side panels are period-correct Pastel Green. The other greens are a bit of a dice-roll. Who said paint uniformity was a good thing?

You’d think, given Germany’s history with totalitarianism and authoritarian abuses of power, the German leadership might want to tread a *little* more lightly here…? Germany is not in a good place right now, and that is very concerning.

While clearing up my late mother’s house, I came across some historically significant newspapers that she had stored in a cedar chest more than fifty years ago. Rather than leaving them sitting in a drawer at my place, I’m trying to think how they might be put to good use in some kind of educational program, or displayed where people could see them. The Toronto Archives were not interested, and the museum library has not yet responded to my query. Ideas are welcome!

Four newspapers. First is the Toronto Daily Star, with headline “Man Walks on the Moon”. Second is The Toronto Telegram, with headline “One Giant Leap for Mankind”. Third is the Toronto Daily Star, with headline “Grieving Johnson Takes Over”. The fourth is the final issue of the Toronto Telegram. There is also a “Man on the Moon” insert from the Star.

There's a big owl that lives up in the forest behind my house and occasionally does a nap-of-the-earth canyon flight between my place and the uphill neighbor's house.
No idea what kind of owl it is since it's pretty fast and I've never got a good look at it.
But I'm pretty sure it's superb.

Once completed I can then take care of some plant moves that were also delayed waiting for this staircase to be in place.
