Amid this news madness, I've thoroughly enjoyed being subscribed to the daily #CarbonBrief. Instead of compulsing the news, I try [and often fail] to focus on the most insightful items in my news feeds. This analysis of the latest UK auction for #WindPower was excellent:

Used our selfhosted #Koffan today in a real-world setting: One at home and adds items to the shopping list, the other at the grocery store checks them off when put in the basket. It updates live and works very well!
There are some UX quirks that make adding/modifying/reordering items a bit tedious, but it's a very new project (1 month old), so I expect it to be worked out in the future.
Ivory users, how do you like the new behavior when you press the little rocket?
Before: direct boost, long press for quote
Now: menu with 2 items, boost/quote
Please boost for more reach. 💛
Sometimes people leave art in the Free Little Art Gallery, which is awesome! And I don’t care if it’s a crayon drawing on paper or yarn tied to sticks, if it’s art, it stays.
But… we do have to curate, and we do have *some* standards, and any offensive items are swiftly removed.
Sadly, my GrapheneOS, Pixel9a (128GB) can’t handle all my #Bandcamp music in .flac format, so it’s time to hunt down some old iPods to mod, or grab a refurbished/custom built one with plenty of SSD storage.

One thing I've taken note of is people are outraged about news items that I don't react to at all.
Both consciously and unconsciously I turn away from some news items because quite frankly, I experience both outrage and empathy fatigue. To protect my mental well-being, there's some topics I turn away from.
Part of this is my natural tendency to prefer to become very informed about a topic before I weigh in.
"Please listen carefully, as our menu items have changed, effective January 27th, 2023."
... I think you can remove that clause.

One of my favourite comedians is Mark Thomas. Does anyone remember the time he took on Sir Nicholas Soames (at the time Tory MP; Winston Churchill's grandson)?
In UK we have a way to avoid some inheritance tax by listing items of cultural interest as being available for public display. Thomas was aware that many of these items were not truly on display; this was a loophole, and back in 1997 decided to do something about it.

I am still adjusting my software related goal setting to the AI age. I had a list of things I wanted to do for 2026 for my trading management site. Maybe this question has been asked before and maybe it hasn't - but to preface - I am not a lawyer nor do I play one on TV. I have (in a previous, gainfully employed life that I find I am missing less and less outside of the recurring paycheck) liaised with a good number of legal folks - both corporate and external counsel facing types.

For fans of #Steam games where you can build -really- broken mechanics like Balatro or Slay the Spire (#deckbuilders, #roguelikes, etc. - "Make the numbers go UP!"), LOOTPLOT has been *extremely* satisfying for me
It's like: "what if Incredible Machine, but Ballionaire" - you randomly get access to a bunch of items that each have their own mechanics and trigger/play off each other, which you build out on a grid - but the grid itself can be manipulated by the items. Some of the interactions are absolutely wild.
Plays a little rough on CrossOver - I think the dynamic scaling plays havoc with texture calculation - but is still enjoyable all the same. (It's written in LÖVE - I really hope the author releases a macOS build!)
The sale price of $3.49 is crazy good for the enjoyment value I've gotten out of it

I learned about Repair Cafe by the news its funding is discontinued. But more cities need to support this type of events. In a world of planned obsolescence, the environmental bill is being paid by communal waste collection services. A targeted analysis of which repairs could be most cost-effective for waste management could help justify funding of such initiatives with volunteer-based repairs.

A lot of TV news items I've seen covering Venezuela will mention the economic decline over the last decade, attribute it to government mismanagement, but will not mention sanctions.
Which seems disingenuous at best.
Christmas shopping on Amazon, it has excitedly told me "Customer who viewed items in your browsing history also viewed" - and then presented with a list of the exact things that I've been looking at.
I'll take that as a compliment.
