The JSON response of translated rules list in Mastodon v4.4 (`/api/v2/instance`) seems to imply that some rules might not be translated.

Oh man, S2E1 of Mallorca Files is really interesting. They basically decide that since this guy was a serial abuser and 27 people came forward with signed confessions saying they murdered him, they're just going to drop the case entirely, that justice was maybe already served.
A fascinating (and probably on balance *good*) take on the sense that in general, 2 wrongs don't make a right, but maaaaaaaaybe just in this one instance, they do.
I have already featured "Jason Scott" @… on my profile now as part of the efforts of archive.org to make their own instance.
archive.org gets the fediverse!

I have seen toots warning about this and wanted to comment on it.
They are impersonating the Mastodon team to require users to ‘verify their account’ and saying that until they do this their account is suspended.
Verification on mastodon is free and you can do it yourself without giving any personal information and it is TOTALLY OPTIONAL.
No server/instance is going to require verification.
I have my verification with my neocities page, on tkz.one, misskey.social and …
If you get a post like this, it is a scam. This particular one targeted many #HashTagGames players and replied to various hashtag game plays but the account has now been blocked by Mastodon.Social.
Mastodon does not do age verification. Check with your instance, report it, etc if you get something like this.

Mastodon 4.4, now available, has a small setting that’s a big deal. See Administration/Server Settings/Discovery, “Allow external sites to see your Mastodon server as a traffic source”.
It means that every time you post a link to a site, that site is going to see as many hits as the number of instances that you have followers on, and those hits are going to be labeled as coming from Mastodon.
This is going to seriously increase Fediverse visibility. Get your instance admin to tur…

In Mastodon v4.4.0 instance owners can enable HTTP referrers.
If somebody clicks a link in a Mastodon post (e.g. to a news article), the link target owner (such as the news site operator) can see that a user from that instance has visited their website.
They do _only_ get the instance domain (e.g. gardenstate.social). No information about the user!
That being said I think gardenstate.social is probably too small to turn this on. Let me know if you feel different!
It is only a matter of time until noem, homan, dhs, ice and potus realize dropping people out of aircraft is cheaper than housing or moving them.
Unless they already have.
Rumors are the US is engaging in death flights. Already there are some known flight paths of ice flights turning around over bodies of water.
The US Congress and international community seem to be the only things that can stop this.
It is so profoundly bizarre to see both:
- The insinuation that coders writ large don’t want to use AI tools and have to be forced
- and the claim that somehow AI is the bee’s knees because all of genX are using it after passing on crypto or whatever.
Both takes are obvious nonsense and this might be the most myopic instance of bubbles I’ve seen so far.

“Our method … is somewhat counterintuitive: we actually steer the model toward undesirable persona vectors... The method is loosely analogous to … a vaccine—by giving the model a dose of “evil,” for instance, we make it more resilient to encountering “evil” training data. This works because the model no longer needs to adjust its personality in harmful ways to fit the training data—we are supplying it with these adjustments ourselves relieving it of the pressure to do so”
Sure, the Fediverse is nerdy and requires you to choose an instance, but at least that makes it too "complicated" for the vice president of a fascist administration to join.

What happens when you don't vet sign-ups is that mods on other instances who value the safety of their users have to pick up your slack.
The extensive work illustrated in the linked post (from @…) is also taking place to varying degrees on every other instance which still federates with mastodon.social and the other open-sign-up ones.
This is like house-sharing with someone who repeatedly leaves the front door unlocked.
Yes of course there are much horribler instances, but those tend to be blocked wholesale in my part of Fedi. Among the instances we do federate with, the spam & scam accounts I see are nearly always on m.s.
If mastodon.social mods (who apparently are paid!) were to make people introduce themselves before approving new accounts, then a lot of this spam wouldn't be getting in the door. Quash once at source, save multiple other people from having to repeat the same work.
I appreciate that they're trying to make it easy for newcomers to join, but at what cost? And is an intro message really beyond the typical non-techie person? I think there are some considerably higher barriers to adoption than that. Not convinced it's a good tradeoff.
I don't actually want this instance to defederate from m.s, because lots of the people I follow are on there. But I can really see why people sometimes do.
#FediMeta #moderation #OpenSignups
@… on ATProto it feels like nearly all users are on the same instance anyway and everybody gives their data to Bsky / Blockchain Capital.
Having a few bits separately in a PDS doesn't feel like federation somehow.
However, if someone decides to have an own Mastodon instance for their family/friends/company that is really done.
And if you don't want…

If you mark a Swift class unavailable on older OS versions, and give that class an instance variable which holds a struct that is only defined in the new OS SDK (such as DynamicGenerationSchema or GeneratedContent), calling objc_getClassList() will crash.
Fortunately, the pattern to work around this is pretty easy (though it does impose some runtime overhead):
final var content: GeneratedContent { return contentStorage as! GeneratedContent }

1) It's really good! I like it!
2) I know you all hate the LLMs, but compared to having to read and understand the entire fucking Linux network stack all the way to the bottom in order to make a simple change, having Microsoft Co-pilot on hand to walk me through it made it take a couple of hours instead of several days.

Ah, I figured it out. Classic.
Somewhere else in the project someone is mocking one of my dependencies and overwriting the singleton instance.
So it’s wholly non deterministic whether I get a working or broken dependency at runtime.
The debugger being attached slowed execution of my particular test, making it more likely the offending one had run in parallel before I finished stepping through the code.
The WriteFreely instance at Infosec.press is cool. It ties back to their infosec.exchange mastodon instance. Thinking about how finding a blog space has been a barrier to some of my protects in the past (noblogs is great but is harder to get an account), I wonder what the prospects are for something like that at @…. Is this something that's on the radar?

@… I will! I forget about hashtags because my one-person instance can’t find anything, but I’ll browse them on mastodon.social.
There's a simple way for instance operators to comply: trust your users. Demand that they positively assert that they do not live in North Korea, Iran, Mississippi, etc. as a condition of joining. This creates a legitimate good faith belief that users are not legally barred from the system.
ALSO: No one should ever take advice from me as grounded in legality. I have no legal education beyond what life has forced upon me without my consent, and I am ill-suited to teach.
Is there a way to force a #Mastodon instance to fetch the follower number of an account again? I'm asking, because @… is growing, but the follower number I see stays steady.. (not only here, but on other instances too)
Feeling like moving this account to a GTS instance, would delete my Bsky and bridge it there and make it a one-for-all, but I want something like WP to tweak not GTS. It'd be cool if @… would consider a 10 buck a month plan for something like ClassicPress w/ ActivityPub, I imagine that's pretty light.
PSA: Fake verification replies are starting again. Don't fall for them. Best thing you can do is report them as SPAM to your instance and forward to any optional instances with "Fake Mastodon Verification Scam" written in the notes/comments section for the report. Make sure everyone you interact with knows this is going on. Permanent solutions to combat this scam are being implemented to tackle it by the software developers.
Anyone know why I can’t see @…’s account when I do a search for “Nouran” from my Mastodon instance? Can you folks see her profile from yours? If not, any idea why not?

I think he is trying to say he is an Avenger without realising he is the supervillain.

My Mastodon instance federates with 26,885 others. Someday, I want to try to answer the question of "How many instances are actually out there?" by checking all 26,885 for who those instances federate with (and probably removing any that don't respond to an http request).
When I wrote my last post above I got an error from my instance that the post was over the 500 character limit. Which is odd, since I have the limit set to 2000 on my instance.
Sure enough, it looks like somewhere along the line I blew away the config files that had been edited to enable the longer posts.
So consider this a test to see if I have correctly re-applied the hack, which is what it is, and completely unnecessarily, in the code for mastodon when this should be a simple switch/option in the admin panel!
(edit: confirmed: 2000 character limit restored)
