Today was the first time I planted potatoes in shorts and a tank top at 25 °C. Before it used to be basically the first thing to do in the garden, yes when the ground had thawed and all that, but usually really quite miserable wet cold weather still. It is still the first thing we did in the garden. Some of the difference is that I am just a bit later with it this year, but some of it is that the first weekend of April feels like fucking June already.
This world is so weird now.

Good customer service at a garden center today. My wife is in a transport chair picking out plants to start our garden. Her lap had a plastic tray filled with plants. One staff member came over and offered to find a cart and push it around for us while picking out a few more plants. The back seat of the car is filled with plants, and the wife is VERY happy. I didn't get his name, but the store got a note that he was a help.

A not particularly exciting photo but nonetheless sad. I was out inspecting shrubs now that our snow cover is gone and discovered pur baby Eastern Redbud tree got snapped off near the ground. It likely happened during one of the ice storms we had in January. We started it as a seedling 3 years ago and last fall it was about 3 feet tall. I should have protected it better for the winter, despite its sheltered location.

A boring photo of a 3 foot wooden stake in a mulched garden bed. There should be a 3 foot high Eastern Redbud tree in the photo but it got broken during a past ice storm.

Scott F, a transit advocate, said he's concerned that the proliferation of planters has monopolized the city's sidewalks, making them difficult to navigate.
"It makes it, in some cases, an obstacle course to board the bus," Scott said. "I think it’s already discouraging people from walking and using transit."

I guided a couple from France, friends of a family friend, around the southern part of Arashiyama in Kyōto, as they wanted to be in nature and away from crowds. The little-known attractions included the garden of the Shintō shrine Umenomiya Taisha (梅宮大社) with a pond and traditional teahouses. Also pictured here are the Moon-Crossing Bridge (渡月橋), the Buddhist temple Hōrinji (法輪寺), and a traditional river scene.
