The thesis I was reading spent the majority of it's time focused on John Boyd's OODA loop as a tool for critical analysis in high pressure or constrained situations. Table top exercises could also benefit from using these steps to slow down the thought process, expose what's actually happening, and sharpen these tools.
So each step could start by observing (which is generally what the GM will tell you, but you may ask additional questions to refine observational thinking). What do you look for in any given situation? How do you gather data? What sources do you use?
Next you would orient. Talk through this out loud. What does that data mean? How this fit what you already know, or does it challenge your assumptions? Are you observing something related to a previous action? What does that tell you about your previous action or actions? How do you turn the data you observed into intelligence you can act on? How do your observations narrow the options for the next possible action?
Then you decide your action. But you're not simply deciding, you're coming up with a hypothesis that your action will test. Anything you do is an opportunity to learn something about the world, about your situation, about the accuracy of the model you're using to make decisions. What belief does your next action imply? How will you know if that action was correct or incorrect? What observations would challenge your hypothesis? What observations would confirm it? Are those mutually exclusive, or are there additional observations or actions you must make to clarify things?
Then act. Finish your turn by choosing your action or actions (individually or collectively). Perhaps take a moment to write down notes, like what your observations, your hypothesis, and if you think your previous hypothesis was confirmed or refuted. You can review these all later to refine your thinking.
By exploring these ideas in a safe environment, you can train your brain to run through the process at high speed when under pressure. This helps you avoid panic. It's a lot like slowly practicing marshal arts moves until they become muscle memory, which then just happen without thought when needed.

There is both where you draw a line on spectrum and how you judge people on either side of the line.
If where you draw the line is much stricter then where other draw it then folks who do better then average but worse then what you expect become a group of people you have to make a decision about.
do you treat them the same as those who are below everyone's line? Or do you address them separately?

So.. I have a theory that burned-out coders prefer AI coding agents. Because at the point of burn-out (and beyond), you just stop giving a fuck. You might still like and enjoy your craft, but when it comes to your job (whether that's proprietary or free software), you just want to get through the day and get it done. And if an LLM helps you accomplish that, regardless of ethics or maintainability or boring button-mashing, so be it.

Shopware 6 Hidden Gems #2: Bulk imports done right — taming the indexers
Every Shopware developer has been here: you push 50,000 products through the Sync API and the import crawls. The writes themselves are fast. Such exercises don't need to be grand though. They can be small. They can be for any domain. They can be organized by people with experience to help people who are new.
A simple scenario of "you're at a protest" can branch off into "you hear blast balls and smell tear gas," "you see someone with a gun," "you see someone injured by police," or "a kettle is forming." Games can allow people with experience to transfer information in a highly effective way, a way that lets new people leverage their knowledge immediately but without risk.
Other scenarios might be things like...
- Someone tells you that your organization has been infiltrated by a right wing agitator
- There's conflict between two members of your organization
- An organizer goes missing
What scenarios do you think activists and organizers should think about?

If you see someone describing something complicated as "A scam" or "a con", a complex economic situation as "theft", you're probably seeing a version of a phenomenon called "splitting". It's a behavior very common among people who've had a lot of psychological trauma. All-or-nothing. It's a self-protective thing. But it's also very much a problem because it keeps them from accurately seeing the world around them, and makes reactions much larger than they should be (and also less considered, so when action is important they tend to be ineffective.)

Representation and diversity is an important topic when it comes to emojis. Studies show that the skin tone modifiers 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏿‍♀️ are primarily used for self representation. And many groups had to fight for their emojis: hijabi women, people with disabilities, redheads, people with curly hair. It is still difficult to show “all” of society in emojis, because human diversity is much more variable than we can show in little pictures: Where I can just say “family” in English and may mean many different constellations, in an emoji I’d have to decide on the number, gender and skin color of all the family members, and that doesn’t even begin to cover all the facets. A real language is much more flexible that way. #emojis #linguistics #WorldEmojiDay

It's still a horrifying thing to think of, but possibly overblown to get money. The headline of the Science article reads: Not alive, but not dead: disembodied human brains used for drug testing By restoring some functions to intact brains from deceased donors, the startup Bexorg hopes to create a better drug development test bed for neurodegenerative diseases, written by Sara Reardon, published on the 20th of May 2026. Though, reading this Science article made me think: aren't we the brain? Am I missing something here? Now, of course the devil lies in the detail and the article makes it clear that this startup only restores “some functions”, which is certainly more complex in action than it is in theory written here, but certain language of the article makes me question the author's understanding of what is a human. The article writes: “Just a day ago, the brain was in a living person. Now, hours after its owner died, it sits on a cart draped in tubes [...]” What do you mean “it's owner” — isn't the brain it's owner? Isn't that where it's owner is? I mean, certainly the brain had no more activity, the person must've been declared brain dead by all standards before being sent to this startup, still it's odd hearing someone donated their brain instead of saying they've donated... themselves? Also “using a set of proprietary brain-sustaining machines” is a terrible sentence I always thought the people who don't donate their full body to hospitals are religious lunatics, but this is the first time I wrote something on my organ donor card. There were people then doing everything they could. Some of them survived, a lot of them didn't. They were heroes, and we should spend more time reflecting on their sacrifice and the bravery of their resistance.
There are people today resisting. They are also heroes. We will never know all their names.
If you are doing all you can, you are doing what you're supposed to do. Some of those people are also calling for new Neurenberg Tribunals. That's also worth keeping in mind.

if so, would you mind saying in which sector?

And another senior citizen rant.
When you post what the update does do NOT use "bug fixes and performance improvements". How about a short update on what you really did like "fixed overflow that may cause a security issue" or "fixed spelling errors".
When I update my code it always has a short description of the change. If there is a RFC to it I include that so you can find the details, the proposed fix, test cases and test results.

We had our dryer vent blown out yesterday. Not quite 3 years since the last time. Our vent’s only got about a 20-25 foot reach, and horizontal, but it still coughed up about a basketball-sized bolus of lint dust. If you have a dryer in your home, when was the last time you cleaned it out, or had it done? Distinct fire hazard as it fills up. It’ll also work more efficiently afterwards. #PSA

If you are a member of the NRA, or know someone who is, I’d particularly encourage you to demand to know why they aren’t leaping to decry the fact that the Trump admin today charged people with a crime for merely •discussing• legal carrying to a protest.
Not because the NRA will have some kind of rational “OMG” moment about it — they’re fashy through and through — but rather because this is one of the many fault lines on the right, and it’s our job to pry those fault lines open.

Added Power Grips (pedal straps) to my wife's #Brompton. Not going to say it's my nicest work, but I'm hopeful that it'll hold. I only drilled holes through the plastic reflectors; the metal is all intact. I can change that later if needed. #BikeTooter

The right side pedal. The red Brompton is folded up (doesn't even really look like a bike), but the right crank has a normal-looking pedal with a black strap on it. The metal hardware attachment has screws going through the orange plastic reflector of the pedal.

The bike's on a white rug w/ black line pattern.
The opposite side of that same right pedal. You have a better view of the opposite side of the orange reflector, with nuts and washers attached to the bolts that go through it. The red folding bike it's attached to is just a jumble of stem, wheel, drivetrain, etc.
The left-side pedal (and behind it, the brompton logo on the red frame). The pedal is folded up so that it is parallel to the crank arm. The orange reflector is missing from the exposed side of the pedal. Of the two screws that held the reflector in, one is missing (just an empty screw hole), and the other is screwed into the end of the black Power Grip strap.
The other side of the left pedal. This time the pedal is unfolded (so it's perpendicular to the crank arm), and the plastic grey reflector mount is installed but only one side is screwed in. The orange reflector is actually missing, and underneath you can see the silver Power Grips attachment hardware. Though normally you'd have two screws holding the attachment hardware in, there's only one screw there; the grey reflector mount is on top of it, pinching it down to hold it in place. Essentially…

RE: mefi.social/@MissConstrue/1165
Motohegemony requires a very specific set of conditions to exist. It relies on an incredibly complex supply chain, and a fragile framework of political and financial support. Leaders have been largely competent (though, perhaps, malevolent), and have prioritized systemic stability over all else.
The conditions that made that system viable have collapsed. Your best bet to avoid being consumed by that collapse is to fight for bike infrastructure and mass transit, and to abandon cars as much as possible.
You will have to adapt to a life without cars. There is no question of "if" that will be necessary, but "under what conditions." Will you choose the time, or will the time be chosen for you?

Oh, here it is (July 2018). It's nice that this report back didn't include any names or initials so I didn't need to sanitize it:
Meeting Notes:
Table-top exercise scenario topic was state and far-right repression.
Responses:
Strong networks require redundancy, so no one person is a social connection, skills, or resource gatekeeper. These people are often targeted by the state, and if they get burned out and leave, it also weakens and jeoprodizes groups.
Ways to strengthen our networks:
Mentoring/sharing responsibility. Creating a culture of mentorship and support so new people learn skills, take on responsibilities, and are introduced to other folks. Reducing burden on a few key people too.
Chaos Monkey exercise: ask central people to step back from communications/organizing to see what happens.
Regular check-ins! & Delegates check-in with new members they sign up
Ask well connected folks to introduce people to build social redundancy.
Gaming (D&D, board games, etc) committee could support a more fun, and socially robust network.
Practical safety tool:
Burner phone. Not everyone needs one, but good to have access to.
TO DO LIST:
Make regular announcements at each meeting for people to check-in with folks they know (especially those they haven’t heard from in awhile!)
Start google doc for disaster preparedness zine
Why you should prepare (ideological argument)
What people should have (the basics)
How to prepare
Frame as questions, so people can find the answer that best suits themselves.
Such as “what are you preparing for?”
Where do you spend most of your time? (home? Office? car?)
Make it as easy as possible for folks to get the basics (list locations for supplies, etc.)
