1. Plan going to Opole, via Kościan.
2. When you enter the train to Kościan, you discover that the change to Opole is delayed 15 minutes already. Consider changing in Leszno instead; if the delay increases, you'd have more options there.
3. Discover that there aren't any more options in Leszno today. Your change is delayed 30 minutes already. Return the reservations, and take one the other way, to Poznań instead.
4. Train station in Kościan. The displays aren't showing any delays, trains are announced normally. Tell people about the delays, so they won't stand in the -10°C waiting for the train to arrive.
5. Take the train to Poznań, and try to figure out what to do next.
6. Discover that the only reasonable choice going forward is Inowrocław: no delays and good return connection. It's the same train, so take another reservation. Your current seat is already taken there, so move elsewhere.
7. Your train should be followed by another one in the same direction, that departs from Poznań 6 minutes later. However, your train ends up waiting for another delayed train, so the other train goes first. The delay further increases as your train needs to slow down after the other train.
8. Reach Inowrocław 10 minutes later. That's not a problem, since you didn't have enough to see for all the time there anyway.
9. Discover that the town is more interesting than you thought, and you'd use more time.
10. When you almost get to the station, discover that your train is 10 minutes late. Not that you have any use for that time at this point.
11. When you're at the station, the train keeps increasing delay while waiting at the previous station, in Bydgoszcz. The station displays are completely useless, as they show only a random subset of regional trains, for no apparent reason. The announcements include all trains, but are rarely given.
12. The delay keeps increasing. Start thinking about getting a reservation for the next train to Poznań, in case it arrived first. You can't return the reservation after the planned departure time, and you can't have two reservations simultaneously, so reserve the seat from Mogilno, the next station.
13. The next train arrives first. While on board, you discover that you're not going to have any train home for 1.5 hr. Take another seat reservation to Leszno, where you can change into a suburban train and get home 15 minutes earlier than from Poznań. This time, your seat is still free.
14. The train departs 15 minutes delayed from Poznań. After all, you're changing trains in Kościan.
So I was going to go south, to Opole, via Kościan. Instead, I've ended up slingshotting north to Inowrocław, and getting back home via the same train as if I were in Opole.

In any case, day 2: Ursula K Le Guin.
As I've said elsewhere, part of her science fiction thesis is that "human" can encompass much more than what we mere Terrans think of it as, and that moral standing extends broadly throughout the universe. This is the antithesis of Tokens fantasy, wherein "race" is real and determines moral standing. For Le Guin, it's barely okay to intervene in complex alien politics unless you carefully ensure you're not causing systemic harms; for Tolkien, it's okay to ambush and murder orc children, because they are by nature evil.
Add to her excellent politics Le Guin's masterful worldbuilding and unparalleled range of plots, and you have the one author I loved as a decidedly liberal and naïve teen and love even more now that I'm an adult. She's an absolute legend and deserves a very high place on any list of women authors (or list of authors, period.).
For a short story, try "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas" which you can read here: utilitarianism.com/nu/omelas.p
For fantasy "A Wizard of Earthsea" (also has a nice graphic novel adaptation), or for science fiction, "The Left Hand of Darkness" or if you want a more anarchist flavor, "The Dispossessed."
I'll close this with an amazing quote from her:
"""
We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.

Content warning: re: bitcoin conference report

A panel on bitcoin treasury companies.
Because investment law makes it hard for institutions to buy bitcoin in their funds. You can't own BTC in you tax free ISA. So some companies that do hold bitcoin, notably microstrategy, became proxy investments. If you can't hold BTC you could maybe own a company that owns BTC instead.
Microstrategy started because it's ceo realized it's dollar treasury was being debased by dollar printing. So tried buying BTC instead, with fantastic success.
Copycat companies proliferated. They boomed and then busted. One panelist calls that a grift. A way to memeticly pump share price.
A line can be drawn between profitable companies just storing their profit in bitcoin Vs those raising debt to buy without having a profitable business.
Imagine a world transiting from using seashells for money to using gold coins. A company gathers seashells from investors to buy gold coins, which will do better than sea shells. Trouble is the next step where the company pays back it's investors with... More seashells.
If you own shares in the company, you do not own bitcoin. You'll just get more old fashioned bank money.
Still. It's worked as marketing, more people being convinced BTC has value.
If you do buy a treasury company, check it's bitcoin not "digital assets" including shitcoins.

If you think the fact it's "digital" will stop me burning my ID card in protest then you can think again!
Phones burn up nicely if you get them right.
They recently decided that company directors have to prove their digital ID. My company turnover is like 500 quid but I'm still a director of it.
So I had to prove my digital ID.
To do this, I had to take my driving license to a post office.
Which means it's no more secure than the driving license I already had, surely?
Wonder if I can sell a digital ID on the black market and then keep getting a new one.

Lucky # 3, 14, 24, 25, 30, 37

Thr video then pans over to a mostly orange cat (with a black spot on its side) who rolls over on its back while looking super cute. In the background another kitty can be seen munching on some kibble.

Say what you will about consumerism, but at least ripping people off is a form of having an actual relationship between human beings. An awful, sick relationship, but a relationship! Sales and marketing require that, at some level, you still view customers as people with thoughts and needs and desires and inner lives.
Now increasingly we run into things like the OP where even ripping people off is more acknowledgement of humanity than a company is willing to give.

hear me out, how about NOT CRAMMING EVERYTHING INTO ONE DEVICE that just works mid for everything, but instead, you know, do some actual innovation here and there
for example, make devices specifically tailored for certain tasks
like if you're Apple why in the fuck don't you make devices with e-paper screens for people who don't want to be terminally online

I wonder if programming language innovation will drop off post-AI. Like there's not much point learning a new language if you're not programming it directly, and LLMs know less about them.
You'll just reach for the language with the most (non-LLM generated) training data which will always be the older ones.

Do you feel that you are too dependent on Big Tech and overwhelmed by the number of services you use?
Are you afraid of the amount of work it takes to get out? - I totally feel you!
But the best is to just start. Start with one service at a time.
Don't overthink it too much.
Don't stress yourself.
Just do the first step. And do the second when you're ready.

What I mean by that is that I grew up in a world where people built wealth by convincing ever-increasing masses of people to buy ever more wasteful and useless crap: “consumer capitalism.”
Now we live in a world where customers aren’t even where the real money is. You don’t get money from customers; you get it from billionaires and investment firms.

RE: hachyderm.io/@thomasfuchs/1156
Maybe you think all of this is irrelevant now, who gives a fuck about a media format more than 50 years old?
Well, fun fact, the design of SD cards is referencing the design of floppy disks, and were specifically made thin enough to be used in floppy adapters (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FlashPath).
Yes, they made an adapter to stick your SD card in and read and write it in a standard floppy disk drive; though you would need to install special software to use it (ironically that software probably came on a CD).
Why would they do such a thing? Because there was no (widespread) USB.

I can’t even begin to describe to you how fucking bonkers this is
