What i find very worrying is the very real chance that de AfD may be winning the next elections in Germany. It would be the comeback of fascism and nazism. There are no other words to describe it. It would severely weaken the EU at a minimum, destabilize europe. I know some state actors who would consider that a good outcome and will do everything to make that happen.

Half of America has completely lost its sense of a "social contract": The idea of working toward BOTH their own best interests & that of their community.
Ironically, it's often the same people that complain about people not being neighborly, that voted for Trump & fascism.

It makes a solid case for the latent fascism of cars, but I would argue that cars actually play an even more active role in creating fascism. Which, I am actually arguing in the essay that I need to get back to writing.

It only takes a very rudimentary understanding of economics to see that, in the long run, the market price of running "agentic AI" (or whatever the latest buzz becomes) and the salary of any kind of knowledge worker can only be separated by a gap that's dependent on *management's* ability to tell their output apart.
There is a cosmic-scale gap between the long-term value to a company in paying a salary to a human vs. getting an LLM to "do" the "same" work, but it's a gap that many people are investing heavily in hiding right now, and CEOs and managers become incredibly gullible when you promise them they won't have to deal with humans who might ask for raises, even though it should be obvious you plan to jack up prices once they're locked in. They also aren't well-known for a deep understanding of how their workers actually generate value, and tend to be easily distracted by shiny but shallow demos, which is exactly what LLMs can produce well.
Even in the most optimistic scenario I can imagine for these developments, the myth of upward mobility that's been a lynchpin for defusing class solidarity among wage laborers is going to take a significant beating. There's a completely obvious game plan underway to try to use fascism to shore up the power of the wealthy against any kind of mass movement, and to play the ancient divide-and-conquer game along race and gender lines just as usual, so the range of outcomes is huge, but every time you use an LLM you're pushing this closer to a sharper conflict.

There was a time, 4 or 5 years ago, when my partner and I had a conversation. We had already fought last time, and now we had kids. We had the ability to leave, so we decided that we would if things got bad enough. We had to make a decision about when that would be, about what the trigger would be. It was Roe being overturned. It had happened in the past. We left as soon as we could.
If you haven't left, or can't leave, you need to make another decision. You need to decide if you're going to fight or hide. I'll tell you now, your best chance is if you fight before it's too late. If you try to keep your head down the best outcome you can hope for is to survive in shame.
If you decide to fight, then you need to decide when. I don't know what your life looks like, so I can't tell you where that line is. But you need to know what it is, because not knowing is the same as hiding. You need to talk to other people and know when they'll fight, because your best chances are together. Everyone should have a breaking point. A lot of folks may have blown right past it and not noticed, because it's all too overwhelming, because life is already too much without adding more. I understand, but without thinking about it you're making a different choice.
This is an extremely common platform for leftists. I remember my old roommate and their autistici email address. I have an account with them for organizing I did in the past. If you've ever listed to anything on the Channel Zero network, you've probably run across someone reading out a noblogs domain. This is an explicit attack on the left, and specifically on anarchists. This provides the legal framework for mass arrests targeting anarchists.
Will they do that? I don't know. They know they're unpopular and they know anarchists are a big part of the fight. Will they use those warehouses? They'll do what they can get away with.
What will you do to stop them? What will you do when they escalate? Figure out your escalation plan. What would it take to get you in the street? What would it take to get you on the barricades? If you don't have a plan, if you haven't at least thought about it, and maybe even talked about it, then you're deciding to let them do whatever they want.
Fascism is like a dying star that gets bigger even as it consumes itself before exploding. It has to have an enemy, so it will make enemies to feed on. You may be used to being safe when the state cracks down like this, but you never really were. Your turn was just so far off it seemed impossible. But now we're at the end. No one will be safe until this is over. So at the very least, make plans for when they come after you.

We are facing global petro-fascism, centered in the US. We have to start threat modeling like an insurgency.
There are two basic goals an insurgency needs to keep in mind at all times: minimize the collateral damage in attacks against the opponent, maximize collateral damage in attacks from the opponent.
A successful insurgency will carefully target their enemy, specifically focusing on the most obvious infrastructure and symbols of oppression.
Meanwhile, they will make sure that their own infrastructure is intermixed with the general population.
What does this mean concretely? Minimize "anarchist hosting." Hosting should be free to community projects of all types. It should be inclusive. When it's shut down, it should take as many other groups with it as possible. This radicalizes other groups.
Optimally, it should provide cheap hosting for small businesses and cheap or free hosting for small community organizations.
There also needs to be a backup plan, because things *will* be attacked...

Regular PSA that if you have any audience, especially in tech, use your reach to speak out against the mainstreaming of fascism and racism.

So about that “far-left threat conference”. There seem to be some people who want to make excuses about Canada and other liberal democracies attending.
Remember, “antifa” was a word claimed as an epithet by the Neo-Nazis, like Richard Spencer.
The fact our governments have internalized this language is a deeply dangerous appeasement of actual fascism.

my grandfather was imprisoned by Franco’s regime because he was on the Republican side and was accused of being Communist though there was never any evidence he was a member of the Communist party. He was just a democrat, who saw Franco for the dictator that he was.
So ya… when people start to make excuses for Mark Carney allowing Canadian participation in a conference whose sole purpose is to drum up fake fear over “leftist extremism”, I take it a little personally.
Fuck Carney’s appeasement.
Attached is a photo of the bombing of Valencia’s northern train station by Italian forces in 1937, near the current stadium of Valencia CF. My grandfather lived in a village on the outskirts of Valencia and participated in resistance within the city. He and his family, including my dad, lived in Valencia throughout WWII. My grandmother eventually took the kids to France in the 50s, and my grandfather joined them after being released (?) from prison. They came to Canada in ‘52 and didn’t return to visit family and friends left behind until after Franco’s death.
This is where appeasement of fascism leads.

it makes me sad that i grew up all my life with the core knowledge that Nazis are bad.... and that seemed to be a universally held - and upheld - truth.
But then everyone got addicted to social media platforms and now it's fine if those companies pay Nazis to post rage bait. People will just keep scrolling anyway.
