One of the great things about globalization is that countries start to get dependent on trading with each other, preventing conflicts and wars and normally leading to peaceful resolution of issues.
This is the biggest reason why most western countries had a relatively peaceful last 75 or so years (globalization obviously is not universally a good thing and has many problems of its own).
But the global turn to fascism and isolationism is starting to dismantle this system, making it worse for everyone.
One year after the return of Trumpism to the White House
— and with it a surge in supremacist ideology
— signals and references to fascism, Nazism, and white supremacy are present in numerous communications from the administration.
Trade union leaders were one of the latest to sound the alarm over the government’s supremacist rhetoric.
The trigger came last weekend from the Department of Labor,

Yesterday I finished "The Other Side of Tomorrow" written by Tina Cho and illustrated by Deb JJ Lee. Lee's "In Limbo" was an excellent graphic memoir, and this similarly has wonderful art, although I didn't make the connection until checking the authors after reading to the end.
This book is a realistic fictional account of two childrens' escape from North Korea via China, Laos, and ultimately Thailand where they could declare themselves refugees at a US embassy and get sponsored to live in America. Along the way they're helped by various members of the Asian Underground Railroad. I'll avoid spoilers but yet definitely encounter difficulties along the way.
The ending definitely hits different now (while also accentuating my disgust with the current US regime). Like "Libertad" that I also finished recently, the "escape to the US at the end" plot line is going to become less prevalent going forward, although Libertad involved a good measure of complexity around that point.
I was a bit disappointed in one of the later plot points where a different and more-real-world-probable turn of events could have served as a better message for society, with the "lucky" outcome as written reinforcing regressive notions of family, and as an ex-Christian the Christian elements of the story made me feel a way. I'm an agnostic, not an atheist though, and can respect the idea that those willing to risk torture and death for their faith have every right to stand by it and take inspiration from it. Most (very valid) critiques of big western Church institutions just don't apply to underground churches in northern China who are helping people escape the horrors of deep fascism.
Overall a really good book.

One of my pet peeves of recent years has been the mainstream press:
(1) adopting “populism” as a euphemism for fascism (e.g. “Trump’s populist rhetoric”), which is at best a blurring of the word’s actual meaning (yes, fascists can use populist language, but populism is not their defining feature), and then
(2) applying the word in its original meaning (i.e. mass appeal to ordinary people) to leftists in direct comparison to fascists as if this constitutes a useful insight (e.g. “politicians with a populist message, such as Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders”).
If historians object that Trump is not a copy of Mussolini or Hitler or Franco, the reply is yes—but so what? Trump is building something new on old principles. He is showing us in real time what 21st-century American fascism looks like.

Americans who support liberal democracy need to recognize what we’re dealing with in order to cope with it, and to recognize something, one must name it. Trump has revealed himself, and we must name what we see.

There are 38500 churches in UK, 16000 CofE. Since 1968 only 2 have become sites for other superstitions, both to gurdwaras. 1 in Peckham became a mosque, but only after >10 years closed.

Polite language has failed. Calm explanations have failed. Panels, op-eds, “both sides,” and soothing reassurances have failed. Fascism does not advance because people lack information. It advances because people are comfortable, distracted, anesthetized, and trained to mistake civility for virtue.

Willem challenged us to ask ourselves what we would do if we were living under Nazi occupation. Before all of this, I doubt anyone thought they would be complicit. I doubt anyone said to themselves, "nothing. I would cower in fear and do nothing."
But for 4 years or so we all answered that question again and again with our lives. Now here we are, answering it again... Every day. But it's no longer "what would you do during the rise of Hitler?" It's now, "what would you do after the invasion of Poland," and "what would you do after you knew about the concentration camps?"
For some people, the answer is still, "nothing."
But a lot of people have been brave in the face of it all. A lot of people have died, and a lot more will die. He will die, perhaps after a ruling by some court or other but, honestly, probably not. That's just how these things work out. Lots of people die, some for no reason, some because they stood up against injustice. A whole lot of people do nothing, until it's safe to claim victory... Until it's no longer safe to be on the other side.
That's just how these things go. Fascism is self-defeating, but it causes incredible harm on it's path of self-destruction. The more people who stand up, who risk themselves, the faster it collapses and the fewer it can hurt. That's also just how these things go. It's incredibly dangerous for everyone until enough people take some extra risk and make it safe for everyone again.
But that question still stands... Which one of those groups are you in? Are you proud of what you are doing, or will you look back with shame? Some of y'all have a lot to be proud of, but, if you're not, it's never too late to earn your way into that proud group.
My request from Minneapolis:
There are lots of different things you can do on this day of protest against fascism. Lots of good things. They all count. Giant crowds matter. Ubiquity matters. Letting even one other person know they’re not alone matters. Just do something. Show up somewhere. Whatever you do, make it greater than zero.

ICE are cosplaying Call of Duty. That is an accurate description of what’s happening. (Listen to “Gear.”)
I make software and I make music. I don’t think either one of those things •should• be about violence. I don’t •want• them to be about violence. But both are used in the service of violence, like it or not. I shout the violence out whenever it shows up. But would be ridiculous for me to point at what Palantir does and say “That’s not software!” Unfortunately, it •is• software. To deny that would be beyond self-defeating; it would be irresponsible.
ICE •is• doing cosplay, and we hate it. It’s an insult to the cosplay subculture. It is an insult to the whole of humanity. Fascism creeps into all of our spheres, into every beloved craft and community, and the response is never to pretend it’s not there. The response is to drive it out.
