I can hope that this will cause Adobe to help her the AI bubble popped sooner and/or that it breaks Adobe's market share, but I'm not going to use these tools, nor will I cheer too loudly if the result is that copyright restrictions actually get applied and stop LLM coding (even though stopping LLM coding is unambiguously good). (This is very much not a "clean room" implementation if Claude's training data includes any Adobe source, which it very well might.
Second, assuming this does not cause courts to suddenly start actually applying copyright law correctly, it represents a terrifying new reality for legacy software companies, given their dependence on software monopolies for a lot of their income. The people who have been building on open source all along have the better business model here, but this becoming the norm is more destructive than helpful to the open source movement, since "just rebuild it" seems easier than actually using or contributing to an existing open-source project.
That said, these tools are certainly full of serious bugs. They would be even if they had been written by humans in this timeframe, although in that case you'd probably have an order of magnitude fewer issues. These bugs will result in things like "if you open this PDF with the tool, your computer gets taken over by a virus". That occasionally happens with Adobe products too, of course, but it will happen more frequently and won't be fixed as fast/well in these tools.

The news media, and even the mathematicians, seem quite credulous about it.
No way to know how many of those will really stand up in the end. Lots of proofs turn out not to be really proofs coz they have a mistake, and AI is quite good at discovering mistakes as well as now apparently discovering maths.
Some of them are counter-examples that prove the conjecture is false and those are gonna be good at last. Machines can check it.
Some have other types of mechanical machine-checkable proof, which is interesting in that we can all believe the checker-machine: coz it's deterministic and understandable.
We can't trust the machine that isn't deterministic or understandable as much though.
GPT says these things are true. Now maths people have to check, because OpenAI staff aren't expert mathematicians either, mostly.
Some of the 400 proofs will fall, I'm sure.
How many tokens will be spent before machines find the flaws that are surely still there? How many tokens until you decide to stop?
But if a machine can prove a thing to itself, but not explain it to any person, is it really doing maths? Even if it's correct more often than people are? Or is doing maths more about making meat understand a thing?

I'm sure I can't tell if the proofs are true or not. No point me reading them. Mostly won't even understand the question. The boundary of my meager meat-mind's maths-understanding was around barely-degree level.
Can the academic discipline continue as one which is devoted mostly to trying to understand the output of a machine writing about maths, which is mostly right but nobody can really tell without an entire academic discipline trying to check.
In other words, mathematicians now also face a spam problem familiar to many github project leads.

@tiotasram@kolektiva.socialJust finished "Across the Widest Sea" by Jean Cremers. An excellent graphic novel about found family, the open ocean, and the unfairness of life. I really like how there's a lot that the book just refuses to explain and you just have to accept how things are as a reader, which mirrors the dietetic situation pretty closely.

There comes (hopefully) a time in life when one recognizes that the law and the system called a "justice system" have nothing to do with justice.
Maybe it's when you see the system's complete disinterest in even investigating rich pedopholes. Maybe it's when you hear about a 6-year-old immigrant separated from his parents and compelled to take the stand in his own defense. Maybe it's when you see it give every benefit of the doubt to killer cops so they can get away scot-free, while doing nothing to change the cultures that continue to produce police shootings. Maybe it's when you see a woman prosecuted for having a miscarriage. Maybe it's when you read the court's opinion upholding the idea that police do NOT have a duty to protect civilians, or the opinion stating that if police choose not to uphold the law that's fine and they aren't accountable for that.
Whenever you see it, a natural question is: when did this happen? How long has this been going on?
Thankfully that question is easy to answer: just open up a history book and look for the founding date of whatever nation you live in.

@ErikJonker@mastodon.socialI like the functional improvements in the new Mastodon UI, but i still prefer something like https://phanpy.social/
It is minimalistic and more serene. The nice thing about Mastodon is that it is easy to choose for something like this because it is so open.
