My >20yo kick drum pedal had a bolt shear off. I went around looking at reviews for what's the new hi-tech awesomeness, because surely after 20 years there's been some major changes, right?
Nope. DW 5000 is still on top (with 9000 being more adjustable in ways that I don't care about, but otherwise the same).

Two kick drum pedals, side by side (with a black cat butt corner photobomb). Both pedals have a red base, with the foot platform and components either painted black or shiny metal. The foot platform is attached to a chain, which then attaches to the beater that hits the drum head (although the one on the left doesn't have a beater installed yet).

The one on the left looks brand new, everything new and shiny. The pedal reads, "DW 5000 The Drummer's Choice". The one on the right looks old and wo…

A pixel art image showing an imaginative, vertical cave scene. Eminent pillars and ruins with classical architecture adorn the left side, leading up to a temple-like structure atop a cliff. The scene is lit by a cascade of ethereal blue light that seems to be flowing from the upper regions, bathing the cavern in a supernatural glow. Good morning friends!
I was going through my lightroom catalogue again and came to this hike. It is a well known spot, yet I haven't managed to get a really good photo from it.
I should check before going there, how the good ones are composed...
But that's something that usually comes to my mind when I'm going up already. And then I'm not in the mood for browsing the Internet. 😊

A serene winter scene captured in this photograph showcases a wooden cross standing on a snowy hill. The landscape features a backdrop of snow-covered trees and a mountain range in the distance. The dominant colors of white and grey create a peaceful and cold atmosphere. Two trees are visible in the foreground, one on the left side and the other on the right side of the image. The image also includes a wooden pole with a sign attached to it. Overall, this image conveys a sense of tranquility an…

Politics (in general)
If you ever needed a short answer on how right-wing politics differs from the left-wing politics:
The essence of right-wing politics is the conviction that it is the most important to help the rich (and other privileged people), because if they became even more sickly rich, it is bound that some of that will finally start trickling down on everyone. And if it doesn't, then it's all fault of the people who aren't white cis hetero males — of given nationality, faith and right-wing views.
On the other hand, the left-wing views are based on weird ideas such as that all people are equal, nobody should be privileged and that everyone deserves to live.

It will always remain for some that call themselves Labour supporters, or of the 'Left', a matter of some shame that a Labour Government is elected.
I'm never sure whether this is out of a reluctance to take responsibility or that the random twitches of reality threaten their particular doctrinal purity.
It is not enough that a government is elected but that the government be of exactly the right kind of policies.

Long story about Scratch and a vast empty field full of tiny bears
My son and I do some simple game projects in Scratch. Scratch is cool. But the situation has a problem: the Boy likes to show the stuff we make to his friends at school. They have Chromebooks provided by the school. Chromebooks come with Chrome installed, and the kids can't install stuff, so Chrome is the only available browser. Chrome has a bug: one webpage can have at most about 500 distinct images. Google is aware of this bug and has been for a long time - they don't seem to have any intent to fix it. So, if you start using sprites with animations, for an RPG, say, you will quickly blow out this 500-image limit. One mob might easily have 30 or 40 frames.
So I had an idea.
The scratch screen is 480x360. What if I "blew up" a spritesheet so that each 16x16 image had a 480-pixel transparent pad between it and its left and right neighbors, and a 360-pixel transparent pad between it and its up and down neighbors? Then I could just load one image - the exploded spritesheet - and when I drew it I would set the offset so that the one image I wanted was at the screen coordinates I wanted. Because of the pads, all of the other images would necessarily be off the screen.
So I wrote a C program to call ImageMagick programs to explode the spritesheet, and that worked fine. The exploded spritesheet is about 9000 x 6000 pixels, but it's only 90k. But then I tried to upload it and hit Scratch's image size limit, enforced on upload, which is like 900x700.
But (the forums said) you could defeat that by making an svg! You can tell it the svg size is whatever pixels, it's stroked. Sure, it's 900 x 700 with a lot of tiny little bears in different poses, each smaller than a pixel.
Unfortunately automated png-to-svg conversion is not something current technology has really solved, or at least not adobe's online converter. It turned all of my bears into little brown smears.
My next plan is to bypass Scratch's image upload size limiter by exporting my scratch program, unzipping it, inserting the image directly in there, rezipping it, and reuploading. I have had some luck with this sort of thing before. But I am about out of energy for this project for today so I thought instead I would write about it on here.

I am so glad I didn't absolutely *have* to buy an RTX card from this generation. At least in my opinion, the prices were the right indicator that even the lower tier Nvidia RT-capable cards are an early adopter thing dressed as a mass product. You don't *need* to play games with RT, unless you love paying more for lower resolution upscaled to an extrapolated image, at lower FPS and higher lag. Today's mass technology could give you 100-200 FPS native QHD without robbing you blin…

Noticed an interesting phenomenon.
These are right angles, and yet, there's a bit of moon shadow there.
Very cool.

Shadows being cast on the ground by a set of right angle boards. The shadow is being projected on a flat piece of foam-core board, You can see all four corners, but at the top left corner, there's a bit more shadow present. This maps to the quadrant of the sun currently being blocked by the ongoing partial solar eclipse. (At my location, the eclipse was a little better than 35%)

Gold finger ring engraved with an image of Hermes. The broad oval bezel of this heavy gold ring is engraved with an intaglio showing the youthful messenger-god Hermes balancing on his left leg as he fastens a wing to his raised right foot. The god wears a short mantle that encircles his neck and hangs down his back. Winged sandals or boots are a standard attribute of Hermes, but it is unusual to find the wings attached to the figure's ankles rather than to some form of footwear.

I grabbed the second in the Midsolar Murders series, “Chaos Terminal,” because the first was pleasant and a space murder mystery seemed fun.
The editing was so poorly done that I had to keep re-reading entire sections, my mental image of a crime scene or interview blown up by it.
These images are spoilers, obviously. If you look…
1. Where is Reggie?
2. When does Mallory stand?
3. Is she talking *to* or *about* Parker?
And I only started taking pics at the end…

Reggie went back into the bathroom; Parker went to ask the bartender. Draughn stood with Amy, Max, and Reggie, then started moving around the room. Finding the body would look sudden and unintentional, he decided. He found the little closet.
"I don't think you have motive to kill me," Mallory said. "Although sometimes people kill when someone gets too close to the truth." She stood up and dropped Amy's hand. "Dammit. I had to talk to someone. And you're the only one who gets the a Parker thing."
"I still can't believe you could think that one of your oldest friends could do that. I can't believe that you'd drop that bomb on Parker and then leave him alone."
Mallory stood up, feeling a thousand years old. "These are reasons why I …
"Third, when the Cuckoos came to protect you, they left Amy alone and stung Draughn. I thought they left her alone because she was your sibling and an honorary member of the hive, but I don't think it had anything to do with her. Draughn was the murderer, and Parker thought he was in danger as well, so they swarmed to protect him, but they also attacked the person they thought was attacking one of their own. They've known all along who did it."
"I still don't know-" Parker said.

"(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me"
I first heard this song by the band Naked Eyes back in 1983. Classic 80s new wave pop.
In the early 90s I learned that this is a Burt Bacharach song, originally done by Dionne Warwick in 1963. But it was also covered by American singer Lou Johnson in mid-1964. It was a hit for him, reaching #49 on Billboard.
Then English pop singer Sandie Shaw covered it, reaching #1 in the UK in the same year.
Here are…

Every semester, Callan Steinmann, our head of education and curator of academic and public programs works with University of Georgia students (either museum interns or Museum Studies students) on a pop-up exhibition of works from our collection. The works are on view for only one night, but we preserve the work these students do by turning the pop-up into a permanent show online.
