UrbanFM: Scaling Urban Spatio-Temporal Foundation Models

Abstract: Urban systems, as dynamic complex systems, continuously generate spatio-temporal data streams that encode the fundamental laws of human mobility and city evolution. While AI for Science has witnessed the transformative power of foundation models in disciplines like genomics and meteorology, urban computing remains fragmented due to "scenario-specific" models, which are overfitted to specific regions or tasks, hindering their generalizability. To bridge this gap and advance spatio-temporal foundation models for urban systems, we adopt scaling as the central perspective and systematically investigate two key questions: what to scale and how to scale. Grounded in first-principles analysis, we identify three critical dimensions: heterogeneity, correlation, and dynamics, aligning these principles with the fundamental scientific properties of urban spatio-temporal data. Specifically, to address heterogeneity through data scaling, we construct WorldST. This billion-scale corpus standardizes diverse physical signals, such as traffic flow and speed, from over 100 global cities into a unified data format. To enable computation scaling for modeling correlations, we introduce the MiniST unit, a novel split mechanism that discretizes continuous spatio-temporal fields into learnable computational units to unify representations of grid-based and sensor-based observations. Finally, addressing dynamics via architecture scaling, we propose UrbanFM, a minimalist self-attention architecture designed with limited inductive biases to autonomously learn dynamic spatio-temporal dependencies from massive data. Furthermore, we establish EvalST, the largest-scale urban spatio-temporal benchmark to date. Extensive experiments demonstrate that UrbanFM achieves remarkable zero-shot generalization across unseen cities and tasks, marking a pivotal first step toward large-scale urban spatio-temporal foundation models.

I have some critiques of "Fighting in the Streets." The last chapter would get you killed. The coms advice are absolutely terrible, which makes me question other elements of the book. But it does provide a framework for thinking about what a militant resistance looks like, and what framework needs to exist to make it possible.
It's a short read, and worth it for the thought experiment. You can read TM 31-210 all you want, but it won't do anything for you without the social framework that makes more than one attack possible. It always comes back to community building, even if (especially if) you're wanting to make sure militant resistance is an option on the table.

How did the Urban Network Flow Adapt to the Collapse of the Carola Bridge?

Abstract: The unexpected collapse of the Carola Bridge in Dresden, Germany, provides a rare opportunity to characterise how urban network traffic adapts to an unexpected infrastructure disruption. This study develops a data-driven analytical framework using traffic data from the Dresden traffic management system to assess the short-term impacts of the disruption. By combining statistical comparisons of pre- and post-collapse motorised traffic distributions, peak-hour shifts, and Park-and-Ride data analyses, the framework reveals how traffic dynamics and traveller choices adjust under infrastructure disruption. Results reveal that the two closest bridges, the Albert and Marien Bridges, absorb the majority of the diverted motorised traffic. In particular, the daily traffic volume on the Albert bridge increases by up to 81%, which is equivalent to 3.5 hours of traffic operating with maximum flow. Peak hours on critical links are significantly prolonged, reaching up to 250 minutes. Besides redistribution, the overall daily motorised traffic crossing the Elbe river declines by approximately 8,000 vehicles, while Park-and-Ride usage increases by up to 188%, suggesting a potential travel mode shift after the disruption. The study reveals the patterns of traffic redistribution following an unexpected disruption and provides insights for resilience planning and emergency traffic management.

HeatMat: Simulation of City Material Impact on Urban Heat Island Effect

Abstract: The Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect, defined as a significant increase in temperature in urban environments compared to surrounding areas, is difficult to study in real cities using sensor data (satellites or in-situ stations) due to their coarse spatial and temporal resolution. Among the factors contributing to this effect are the properties of urban materials, which differ from those in rural areas. To analyze their individual impact and to test new material configurations, a high-resolution simulation at the city scale is required. Estimating the current materials used in a city, including those on building facades, is also challenging. We propose HeatMat, an approach to analyze at high resolution the individual impact of urban materials on the UHI effect in a real city, relying only on open data. We estimate building materials using street-view images and a pre-trained vision-language model (VLM) to supplement existing OpenStreetMap data, which describes the 2D geometry and features of buildings. We further encode this information into a set of 2D maps that represent the city's vertical structure and material characteristics. These maps serve as inputs for our 2.5D simulator, which models coupled heat transfers and enables random-access surface temperature estimation at multiple resolutions, reaching an x20 speedup compared to an equivalent simulation in 3D.

There's a default assumption baked into how Silicon Valley builds products,
and it tracks against how urban planners redesign neighbourhoods: that communities are interchangeable,
and if you "lose" one, you can manufacture a replacement;
that the value of a group of people who share space and history can be captured in a metric and deployed at scale.
Economists have a word for assets that can be swapped one-for-one without loss of value: fungible.
