The official Xubuntu website was compromised over the weekend (18/19 October 2025) briefly serving up Windows malware to users trying to download the distro.

Ok, resolved some etcher problems - ubuntu is fast with this stuff - seems to be flashing the bootable driver now.. 🤞
Also found some very cool photos from a trip 10 years ago and some ideas for new projects, also about 7 yeasr old on the USB stick - so that's a win.

@… Seeing as Mint uses Ubuntu as its base, I don't know if Mint is really not as good on drivers or privacy. I've been using Mint for quite a while now and really like it. I wasn't as happy with Ubuntu.

🫰🏿 Snap out of it: Canonical on Flatpak friction, Core Desktop, and the future of Ubuntu

Every God damned time I install #Ubuntu on an old macbook with a Norwegian keyboard (which is more often than you might think), I want to kill myself because of how the keyboard is setup. For example ' (apostrophe) is not defined at all. 😱
I finally made some notes for myself:
Ubuntu Touch is an important project for a freer future for mobile platforms, but current alternative operating systems are simpler to use at the moment.

A new puzzle: normally in #XOrg I can blank the screen with "xset dpms force off" and with KDE/Plasma I could bind this to a hot key, but in Gnome #Ubuntu 25.10 using #XFCE4 it will work from inside a terminal, but as a hotkey it blanks, pauses, then refreshes the screens. Why would this be? Or perhaps, is there a prefered method to instantly blank all screens in XFCE-4? Not to lock, just to turn them off.
An annoying bug in Plasma 6.4.5 on FreeBSD 15.0 in VirtualBox.
Not present with 6.3.4 on Kubuntu 25.04. If it's reproducible on 25.10, I might report upstream.

My wife's Macbook laptop from 2015 was causing her problems because the operating system was old, the disk was always filled with Mac's shit she couldn't control, wasn't able to install modern applications, etc...
So, I've installed Ubuntu in her laptop and everything goes faster & smoother than before, and she has now a modern operating system in a perfectly working piece of hardware.
@… Doesn't really matter tbh you will be good with most recent Ubuntu as well. Go with something that you feel familiar with or something that has a good resources online.
I would only advise against Debian and Manjaro - everything else will be just fine. I had no issues playing Steam games on Ubuntu, Fedora; SteamOS is based on Arch (that should be a hint); I ha…

Modern Ubuntu not including a ZFS root option from the installer is a giant pain.
#Mastodon spotted!

@… You should find plenty of Linux people here. I started with Ubuntu began to feel a bit 'heavy'. I tried Mint for awhile, it's OK. Now I've moved onto Antix and it's much lighter on its feet. I even run it regularly on an old netbook.
Friday was an adventure in tech futility. Started with a gifted laptop, Dell Latitude, and the simple task of wiping its poor excuse for an OS and installing something sensible.
#Ubuntu wasn't it. OMG Ubuntu, what HAVE you done?! Tried first #UbuntuStudio then stock Ubuntu, 24.04, 25.04, 25.11, all the installers simply hung, no log, no journalctl, CPU chugging but nada detectable action, even hours later, just "Preparing…"
Net advice is old, of course, but points to the snap bootstrap service, fix has no effect but Kee-riced look at the mount table?! Snaps crackle and pop all over! Wtf, why? 🤯
And it is tedious. These 'DVD' iso files are 7GB, so, after 6 hours frustration, I thought, let's try something smaller to cut the turnaround time. #Debian13 simple bare-bones net-install seemed a good candidate …
And it was. Seemless install. 😊

Twin Lake (N150) mini PC arrived and has been reformatted to Ubuntu Server. Next step: swap the fstab/samba stuff from the Chromebox to the new machine and make sure Time Machine backup keeps working.
Well it's pretty unpolished, but it works. Made good progress on my web manager / installer for games.
Currently supports Debian and Ubuntu, (though technically works on any Linux distro in theory), and supports:

I used to recommend #Ubuntu, and as of 2024, I started recommending #LinuxMint, especially #LMDE to the many (almost no people) who ask me for
Civilian friend sent me a .zip file saying “won't open, help please” and it wouldn’t, and thus TIL about The Unarchiver, https://theunarchiver.com/command-line (brew install unar) which solved the problem.
as a security precaution I am now running all Eleventy projects submitted through support channels via a Virtual Machine (Ubuntu on VirtualBox)
I think I might be ready to move to Ubuntu touch or plasma mobile

Idag är en heldag på huvudkontoret, jag var snäll och tog skjorta idag med min ubuntu tee under knäppningen. Men raka mig? Näe, hela huvudet ser ut som en kiwi - small rebellion ⭐️
And... just realized I made the rookie error of not running the upgrade under screen. One time about 6 years ago I did this with Ubuntu and the update got aborted halfway through and was a huge mess to recover from. Hopefully Debian isn't so brittle now.

I bought an inexpensive mini-PC that came with Ubuntu pre-installed. That's fine, but I have no interest in running that; I want to run Fedora. Preferably Silverblue. But every attempt I've made to install Silverblue ends up with the error the commmand 'ostree admin --sysroot=/mnt/sysimage deploy --os=fedora fedora:fedora/42/x86_64/silverblue' exited with the code 1 which leads to
Spent time today helping a VAR upgrade from one support appliance to another. Not my job but I get sucked into these things. While racking the new one I found an unknown box in the rack. "What is this?" "Oh, thats <vendor>'s box. We stopped using them years ago." Cue me finding a Ubuntu 16.04 box STILL ON OUR NETWORK FROM A VAR WE DON'T USE. Keep in mind, these are the same folks that run around screaming about security. Some days I really want to just wa…
I don't know what to think at this point:
```
FROM docker.io/ubuntu:24.04
RUN --network=none echo "hello world"
See that `--network=none`? It fixed my problem... but WHY? I mean, why do I need to enforce that for a simple `echo` call? 🫠
Czasem człowiek chce sprawdzić, jak coś robią inne dystrybucje, by zrobić to konsekwentnie w #Gentoo. Tylko pojawia się pytanie, które dystrybucje sprawdzić?
Na pierwszy rzut idą dystrybucje, które nie wywodzą się z innych. Ale wówczas zaczynasz zadawać sobie pytanie: czy Ubuntu robi to samo, co Debian, czy może robi to po swojemu? Czy openSUSE jest podobne do Fedory, czy może inne? Czy Exherbo …
Here's another new #hosting provider experience I wasn't expecting to see. Forky installed by default. I selected Debian 10, because that was the latest version in config form. Maybe they thought they were doing me a favor? The hardware isn't that new. If I wanted Ubuntu I would have chosen that.
Ubuntu-Installation läuft. Tschüss Windows 10
Successfully switched an old Chromebox to running Ubuntu Server last night. This one will probably wind up at my parents' place, and I'll grab another mini PC for here, so I'll have geo-redundant, ISP-redundant backups that don't require a cloud, on hardware low-power enough that electricity use is a rounding error.
@… I've been very happy with Mint since I switched from Windows in 2024. It works very well and is fairly customizable. It's also not a difficult transition from Windows. I found Ubuntu to be not as satisfying. I've also tried Zorin, but prefer Mint, because it is more customizable, at least for me.
I had a couple folks hop into our Discord to ask for some help on the ARK Server installation script.
Got them resolved, but one of the comments struck me as interesting. "Do you support modded maps"
I didn't even think of modded maps... but that sounded like a good idea!
So I'd like to announce my Debian/Ubuntu installer for ARK SA now has support for modded maps! (and a bunch of other improvements to the UI)
so far, so amazingly good. the Dell 5290 has a close keyboard but with a nice haptic response and despite less RAM and similar bogomips to my old ZaReason, everything media has been smooth as glass in #Debian13 - never thought I would say so, but if you are new to pondering Linux for that machine that can't do Win11, for everyday use or science lab stuff unfettered by clouds, I wouldn't go near Ubuntu, you'll be just fine in Debian.
According to #FreePG right now: #ArchLinux, #Debian, #Fedora, #NixOS and #Ubuntu. Now #Gentoo joins that list, except that instead of silently making intrusive patching on top of GnuPG, we provide it as a separate package (app-crypt/freepg), and mark appropriately:
$ gpg --version
gpg (GnuPG) 2.5.13-freepg
They say a change is as good as being arrested, or something like that, and being reckless (and retired) I upgraded my vintage laptop to #Ubuntu 25.10 because why not, it was already broken from a few upgrades ago, and it was already clear #plasma on #x11 with my Radeon 570 was, well, not fun.
So down the list I go. Those of you on Mac or that other O/S ("little&soft"?) won't understand, but I went through each of the various desktops, just to see, not expecting a lot given my hardware.
Well, Ubuntu on Wayland works now, but, egad, it is ugly. Gnome and its Classic look, well, almost the same. One of the others is just a blank screen, but remember, my machine was already broken.
I ended up in #xfce which I hadn't used in, omg, never mind, only I'm thinking, hey old man, learn some new tricks! Need to add panel and some widgets and…
why is my panel's outline slowly blinking red? (left it in Add mode and buried the dialog box)
