Ordered a Modelo upgraded to a Michelada. I’m just an uncultured Canadian so this is not what I was expecting. It’s awesome!

A wide frosted and spiced rim glass with an upside down bottle of modelo in a pool of tomato juice
After, the beer is mixed with tomato juice and a lemon wedge is floating, empty beer bottle to the side.

Good Morning #Canada
Listening to Christmas tunes and watching the snow fall.
Notable Canadian snowstorms:
- 1913 Great Lakes Storm. The most destructive natural disaster on the Great Lakes, causing 250 deaths & destroying 19 ships.
- 1941 March Blizzard: Brought 100 km/h winds and temps of -45°C to Saskatchewan and Manitoba, leading to the deaths of 72 people.
- 1944: 47 cm of snow hit Toronto in a single day. Unfortunately, the Canadian Army was overseas.
- 1971 Montreal: 45 cm of snow on March 4th & wind gusts of 110 km/h. 200 Ski-Doo owners provided emergency transport.
- 1977: This blizzard struck Southern Ontario January 28 to February 1. Toronto DID NOT call the Army.
- 1999 Toronto Snowstorm: A series of snowfalls paralyze the city, total snowfall for January reached 118 cm. Yes, the mayor called the Army.
- 2007 February 2007: Storm hits Central and Eastern Canada, with Ottawa setting a single-day snowfall record of 35.7 cm.

one of the coolest things about the #bcndp convention has been the use if this little ballot book for voting for elected positions within the party.
They announce the number and colour of the page, you rip out the paper and use it to make your selection.
Then the committee folks go around with ballot boxes like offerings at church 😆

Good Morning #Canada
I have one final chapter for The Dirt on Canadian Farming, and it's more of an opinion piece.
As I conducted research on each province for information on their agriculture, there were numerous news stories about how farmers and farm organizations were fighting against loss of farmland. Urban growth, new housing development, and sprawling industrial parks are gobbling up prime farmland. The attached article is just one example. The statistics released by each province have common trends:the average age of farmers increasing, individual farm operators in decline, larger farms are increasing, renting of farmland is growing, and overall arable land is in decline. With the sparsely populated prairies holding the majority of fertile farmland, Canada likely won't lose our global impact because of development for houses or industry. But elsewhere, our food chain will be pushed further away from where we live. Or disappear.

Good Morning #Canada
On this day in 1948, the longest serving political leader in the British Commonwealth retired. William Lyon Mackenzie King served 21 years and 154 days as Prime Minister of Canada, in non-consecutive terms, from 1921–1926, 1926–1930, and 1935–1948. He led Canada through the Great Depression, introduced Old Age Pensions, nationalized the Bank of Canada, passed the 1938 National Housing Act to improve housing affordability, established the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Trans-Canada Air Lines, and the National Film Board, and implemented Unemployment Insurance. His government was also responsible for Japanese Internment Camps, and he believed strongly in the occult.
This video from TVO is an excellent overview of King's career. It's probably a two coffee viewing this morning if you have the time, but IMO worth the investment.

Search is Dead.
Really, this should not have taken two hours across oodles of prompts using four different search engines, but every one of those prompts was deconstructed into syllables to match anything even remotely thesaurused, regardless of details provided, regardless quote marks, minus or plus signs. "Malcolm Strauss"? oh, you mean RICHARD! No, fuck you bot, and Diana Allen is neither Rita Hayworth or Woody Allen and 1923 is not 1945 and a 2006 is unlikely to be SILENT, and this shouldn't take two hours before, finally, only Google would find this mention with the key phrase "presumed lost".

Good Morning #Canada
Our #CanadianCapitals feature today is the oldest European settlement in North America as well as the most eastern city on the continent. Despite a history that goes back to he 1490s, St. John's Newfoundland was incorporated as a city in 1921 and became a provincial capital in 1949 upon joining Canada. The natural harbour served explorers and fishermen for centuries, and the settlement survived pirates, attacks by the French, and several devastating fires. If the Portuguese had more influence, it would have been named Rio de San Johem, which is a missed opportunity.

A proud achievement of my half-century IT career happened in 1996 consulting to the #UNDP toward the first published edition of the Humanity Development Library.
It seemed easy enough: "It can be fairly estimated that 1/3, or about 20 million pages of UN, and as much University and NGO material are very useful. Those 20 million pages useful UN publications probably contain about 50% of solutions for major World problems. This information must be released in digital format for non-profit redistribution in all countries."
also portable and accessible to all platforms, everywhere.
Happily, not only did the project live on, but thanks to @… our once-intractable problem of global delivery is now globally solved!
So, whether or not this is timely, I don't know, but should you need to suddenly rebuild some semblance of civilization from scratch…

On Sunday, October 5, 2025, my wife and I are participating in the Canadian Cancer Society's Run for the Cure. This national fundraiser brings together communities across the country who will run or walk in support of all Canadians impacted by breast cancer. We are walking in honour of my mother, my two sisters, and both our daughters - all of whom have been touched by this terrible disease.
Our family isn't special as 1 in 8 women will face a breast cancer diagnosis in their lifetime, It is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Canadian women, and all of us likely know someone who has battled it in the past, or is fighting it today. I encourage all Canadians to donate in honour of someone they know or simply to help their communities fight breast cancer. This cause is particularly important to us, especially this year, as we support our daughters, and I hope all Canadians get involved.

Reading about Baldur von Schirach. Sounds familiar.
“In February 1928 he became a university group leader of the National Socialist German Students' League.”
“He worked to broaden the Nazi Party's appeal to the bourgeoisie. Schirach was supported by Hitler in internal elections, who also wanted the Nazi Party to have a broad social base.”
“Schirach was skilled at bureaucratic power struggles. He founded the School Children's Leagues (Schülerbünde) to create competition to the Hitler Youth. He made an ally of Joseph Goebbels.”
“Schirach was named national youth leader of the party in 1931.”
“With Heinrich Hoffmann, Schirach produced several propaganda books of Hoffmann's photographs, including "Hitler As No One Knows Him", "Youth Around Hitler", and "Hitler in His Mountains". Schirach wrote the captions. The books sold hundreds of thousands of copies, earning Schirach and Hoffmann substantial royalties.”
“On 16 June 1932, he was made Reichsführer of the Party's Hitler Youth organization, and resigned from the Student League. Under Schirach, the Hitler Youth stewarded NSDAP events, and 21 members died in 1932. Schirach described these deaths as "blood sacrifice" for propaganda purposes. One example was Herbert Norkus, a fifteen-year-old boy who was stabbed to death by Communists. In a 31 May 1932 speech, Schirach recounted Norkus's death and called for a "National Socialist dictatorship". Schirach gave a memorial speech on the third anniversary of Norkus's death in January 1935.”

Going shopping for #Halloween decorations to keep up with neighbours. After 16 years with no trick-or-treaters, we are looking forward to receiving costumed kiddies.

Thought I'd be clever. Saw the same TP-C110 camera I've used for years on sale, and, like, should be easy to add to #zoneminder
… four hours later 😔
401 Unauthorized is likely misleading, but that's all I can get.

Good Morning #Canada
There is a lot of news coverage about a USA president that lusts after a Nobel Prize like he attacks a family sized bucket of KFC. So let's celebrate that OTD in 1957, the first Canadian won the peace prize - Lester B. Pearson. Before he became our 14th Prime Minister, he spent the majority of his career as a diplomat. He was one of the founders of the United Nations and almost ended up as its first Secretary General. He was instrumental in ending the Suez Canal crisis by suggesting and helping to implement the first U.N. Peacekeeping Force.

the Question I have will be this:
Will Venezuela try to quickly procure #RussiaUkraineWar inspired military drone materiel (ie. cheap, numerous) beforehand to use in defense... and is the American war machine, particularly the Navy, ready for that?
Don't be too surprised if at the start of things Venezuela pulls off some surprisingly destructive actions not unlike Argentina vs UK in the Falklands with French exocets.

Good NYT piece (gift link). Tl;dr: Financial whiz kids want to get their hands on mainstream retirement & insurance money so it can be plowed into unregulated private-debt markets and crypto. What could go wrong?

Cafe life.

In a white cafe with wood trim, four individuals sit at adjacent tables, each back to the wall. An old bank safe is in the corner. Light comes in the windows high on the wall behind the customers and casts shadows on the floor. Another wall has a pattern of hanging artworks; below them, a baby carriage with a pink cloth which presumably covers the baby.

Listening to CBC Radio Barrie this morning and they were interviewing the manager responsible for housing starts for the Town of Innisfil. The discussion was about missed targets for housing starts and what can be done to get back on track. You could tell that he was frustrated, but the reason for less homes being built was almost solely put on the downturn in the housing market. No one is buying, so private industry isn't building.
All levels of government are throwing money at the problem, with most of it incentivizing for-profit companies to put shovels in the ground. At some point, the Federal, Provincial, and Municipal governments have to realize that public housing, government leasehold development, co-operative housing, or subsidized family apartments must be considered to solve the housing shortage. Private industry will never have the same objectives of getting families into homes - without a calculation of significant profits first.

Hanging blinds this afternoon. One down and two more to go. The learning curve was a bit steep on the first one, but that means the rest will go quickly. Might have time to squeeze in a nap.

Today's #CountryMusic addition to the series is from William Prince. An absolute under-appreciated artist from Manitoba.
