A Professor at Toronto Metropolitan University:
“The Government of Canada could easily decide that it was going to use LinkedIn or Instagram or wherever it posts, and journalists would switch to following them there because they want to access what they’re saying,” he continued. “There was zero audience for Truth Social when
Trump created and started using it, but the audience went to the politician. Carney and his government could take a principled position by leaving X and its horrible spawn, Grok, and his audience of journalists and politicos would go with them.”
“Apparently, our political leaders simply choose not to.”

Question for car people about regenerative braking (which occurs when the vehicle is either coasting, OR I am applying the brakes). Is regenerative charging binary (ON or OFF) or analog (regenerative braking intensity along a scale)?
Scenario: I drive a Toyota hybrid. I am coasting or going downhill, and I am getting regenerative braking (battery charging). Now I feel the need to apply my brakes to slow down even further. Does physically applying the brakes boost the amount of regenerative braking I am getting, or not? 🧐

Good Morning #Canada
Here in beautiful Belle Ewart the temp is -22°C, feeling like -31°C with the wind. But it's a dry cold....
Out west they are struggling with double digit temperatures on the plus side. Edmonton's winter festival organizers are making snow, protecting ice blocks and praying for plunging temps to save their skating rink. The unseasonable weather has impacted events throughput Alberta. The Banff and Lake Louise ice carving festival, Art of Ice, had to take down sculptures because they weren't safe. They were similarly impacted last year. The World’s Longest Hockey Game (WLHG) got underway last Thursday and players are dealing with slushy conditions while golf driving ranges are packed with eager duffers.
I'd gladly make the sacrifice and swap weather conditions with our fellow Canucks out west. It would be a burden that I'd gladly carry.

Good Morning #Canada
December 8th, 1869, Timothy Eaton opened a small dry-goods and haberdashery business at 178 Yonge Street in the city of Toronto. From that humble start grew a national retail chain that eventually would bring Christmas Window Displays that attracted crowds for 100 years, and the tradition continues today. The heyday for the window displays was the 1940s to 1980s when Eatons and Simpsons competed for children's noses pressed up against their windows. But every store, large or small, had their own creative display in December. In the 1990s retail chains started to falter and disappear and some displays, like those from Woodwards and Ogilvys, were preserved by museums. I remember our annual visit to Eatons and Simpsons on Yonge Street in the early 60s, when Mom and Dad would load up the car with 7 kids and we'd tour the Christmas displays.

A new #Nextcloud adventure: having installed the new Social refactoring and passed the webfinger and ssl tests, was still unable to load some profiles and no interactions went out or came in.
Then I noticed PullRequest-5 - not knowing at all what I was doing - so I installed gh, authorized it, did the pull, composer, run sequence, and while the existing open tab for Social continued as before, 'Social' was now gone from the NC admin and menu!
"app": "core",
"method": "GET",
"url": "/settings/apps/list",
"message": "Could not read app info file for app \"social\""
Google/DDG are mute on what or where an app info file might be, and NC docs only say you can register an app and maybe perhaps the tarball will contain one? Perhaps the PR munged it? 🤷
So a new adventure begins …

So this is percolating and the results so far are not surprising.
I'd vote NO, for the following reasons:
- oil demand continues to decline and risk is high we'll end up with an expensive underutilized pipeline. Therefore high risk we'll end up subsidizing any private entity that builds this thing.
- why would we invest public dollars to support infrastructure for a product where 75% of the profit leaves Canada? There has to be a net benefit, beyond steel sales and jobs, for this project to be considered.
- Indigenous land rights must be respected. They will be left with the rusting pipeline decades in the future, and it's impact on the land.
- the B.C. government must also have a final vote as they have to give up land and provide support.
- we don't need additional oil tankers on our west coast.
- and most importantly, with this MOU, Canada pretty much declared we aren't serious about protecting the environment or fighting climate change. We're oil whores. Harsh but....

At the neighborhood party you may be asked to wear a name tag with your first name. The initial contact and conversation is more relaxed as no one wants to talk about their work. Your neighbors want to know how you feel about that ungodly reno going on down the street, share stories about your kids, and swap anecdotes about pets. Definitely cats... lots of cat sharing. It's a community where no one is selling, no one is recording data, and there's no unfathomable app pushing conversations into your group. The goal is to go home feeling closer to your community and more empathy for its members.

At the corporate event everyone is wearing a name tag with your title and the company you work for. Guests are circling each other trying to read the name tag and see if you're interesting enough to talk to. Almost no one is there to simply socialize. They are trying to sell you something, sway your opinion, or add your details to their records for future use. In the background the conference has a software app that allows attendees to track and target each other. The goal is to add as many people as possible to your network, or insert yourself into their contact list. It's rare to make a new friend.

@…
I'm late to this conversation and then I had to read through the responses to see what I could add. Most of the points, good and bad, are contained in the replies. So I tried to apply an analogy using the experience of similar but different events.
The difference between having an account on social media platforms from the tech bros (X, BlueSky, Threads) versus participating on Mastodon is like two different types of cocktail parties. One is closer to a corporate event like those held at industry conferences. The other is a neighborhood get-together at someone's house.

Part 3 - Moving forward
One of Mastodon's strengths is its decentralized structure. That also means no centralized marketing or development strategy focused on growth, particularly in Canada. Perhaps a volunteer group could take on that development plan and grow the Canadian user base.
- A vision of what an ideal future state would look like would benefit the planning and action steps. Collecting input from Canadian admins is recommended.
- We shouldn't burden existing admins beyond their current responsibilities. Volunteers would take actions like reaching out to politicians or government agencies.
Potential next steps:
1) Host a web meeting with interested Canadian admins to collect input on a shared vision for this project.
2) Collect volunteers who would be interested in reaching out to politicians or government agencies about creating a presence on Mastodon.
3) Select members of the group to be part of a steering committee.
4) Create a unique hashtag for this project for reporting and followers.

There was, I will admit, a certain professional thrill maintaining world-class systems that absolutely must stay online a string of 9s esp when hit with and surviving killer surges.
I only wish employers remembered such, and those many grants and awards associated, when it came time to be rid of you.

Finding a crate of ancient but precious CD-R and DVD-R's is like finding a chest of scrolls in the basement of a temple that burned down. There's a welcome prize, but many frustratingly missing fragments.
Back in 1994 when asked about the (very popular) bank of Compaq gaming machines packed with latest CDROMs being a core of the Information Highway exhibit at the Ontario Science Centre (god rest its soul), I would explain that the CDROM was a proxy for the bandwidth that was to come.
I think I got that more right than I knew: the CD-R/DVD-R is a TRANSPORT media, and certainly absolutely NOT a STORAGE media. It's charm is transport over very very very slow baud rates of perhaps 4GB/20 years. 😅

Content warning: Minneapolis shooting video

As with the Ottawa truckers thing, I think we are expected to suspect videos like this are all funded fabrications and the channel itself a Russian asset?

Great message from Tod Maffin - @… - about what ordinary Canadians can do in response to U.S. threats to our sovereignty. He's a great cheerleader for Canada and this message deserves to be boosted and shared.
