Here’s my 35th “Long Links” outing, curation of long-form offerings, which assume that nobody has time to read all this stuff but one or two of the pieces might brighten your day. This one is mostly political but some of the politics are from France and China. Plus a way-cool analytical history of blogging and a section labeled “wonderful things”.

Stop pretending that things are not seriously messed up.
See the STN for what it is.

It's dark. On the other side of an intersection, several cars are lined up at the traffic lights; their headlights are brilliant but diffuse, and reflect on the dark pavement, which has distinct ripples in the near field. Behind the cars, miscellaneous white signs. The traffic light is visible, and is green; also there is a white "walk" glyph. In the top right, a street light, also diffuse. In the top center, a curtained window glows. To the left, a H&Z market, a convenience store, glows white …

Pot lights are a mistake, an architectural foible that’s ubiquitous because it makes a place look glamorous when you’re walking through thinking of renting/buying it. Looks good in photos too. And they’re fine for cooking or reading because you’re looking down. But for activities like conversation or chilling in front of the screen, they glare annoyingly. The collapse of First Brands (it’s not just you, few had heard of them) is *probably* not the pin that pops the current bubble, but it’s entertaining. Wall Street will reliably engage in lethal/suicidal business practices given the chance.

Cafe life (look close).
#photography #mystery

From inside a cafe, a busy street. A woman in jeans and a black T-shirt is walking and talking on her mobile. On the other side of the dense traffic, store fronts and trees. Looming over the cars - maybe on the back of a truck? - is a large vaguely human figure kneeling as if to start a race. Its surface seems organic: wood or plants?

[Tl;dr: They’re offering a free DNS resolver, Canadian-built and -run.]
