Back in 2015 (iirc) Apple introduced ad blocking extensions to Safari, i know a well-known app developer made one and immediately got attacked by fellow app developers and took it off market within days; does anyone remember the name of the developer/product or have a link to a news story about it?

So much of the work we do in software is about asking not just what •does• happen when the developer runs their own code, but what •could• happen when the code is running in the wild, out from under the watchful eye of its author.
That’s really, really hard. It’s a large portion of what makes development time-consuming and labor-intensive.
And it’s something you can only do if you actually understand what the code •means• — both to the computers and to the humans.

"When developers are allowed to use AI tools, they take 19% longer to complete issues—a significant slowdown that goes against developer beliefs and expert forecasts. This gap between perception and reality is striking: developers expected AI to speed them up by 24%, and even after experiencing the slowdown, they still believed AI had sped them up by 20%."

I know as a developer just how hard it is to actually make it work, but perhaps the lesson of the Liquid Glass public reaction fiasco is for Apple to just give users •much• more control over the UI theme.
Between the retina transition, iOS 7, accessibility improvements like variable text size, dark mode support, and the long migration away from hard-coded layouts, we developers have grown used to making more adaptable UIs. Lots of the building blocks for OS-level theming are there, both in SwiftUI and in UIKit.
If Apple said “Themes are coming!” at WWDC 26, developers would adapt.
Assuming we still have a functioning society at that point.

Yah, that is going to go over so well. About half my career is now supporting old stuff where the 'experts' claimed that it will replace programmers. Most of what I work on to be charitable is unmaintainable and inefficient code unless we use the developer package from the vendor. It has the potential to be a good tool that generates parts of the boring code, but needs someone who knows what the hell they are doing to make it secure and efficient! Nice analysis of housing in Vienna. Back of the envelope calculation suggests rents are about 30% less than in San Francisco. Why aren't we hearing more about this from the "abundance" crowd? We know we won't get there with market driven housing production (I've had more than one developer explain that to me)

"The overall life expectancy of a programming language has dwindled in the past 56 years. A COBOL developer in the 1960s most probably retired in the 2000s, still writing COBOL. As a former professional VBScript, then C#, then Objective-C, later Swift, and finally Go developer, I can only see this trend accelerating. We should expect our favorite programming language to be replaced and removed from the market in a relatively shorter time every decade."

Like other large #FreeSoftware projects, #Gentoo developers have varying degrees of activity. There are some people who dedicate a lot of their free time to Gentoo, maintain hundreds of packages, participate in multiple areas. Then, there are people with narrower interests, lower commit counts, but they are still putting an effort and making Gentoo a better distribution — and that matters. But then, there is the tail.
There is a few of developers whose main talents seem to be 1) finding packages that require absolutely minimal maintenance effort, and 2) justifying their developer status with long essays. I mean, this is getting beyond absurd. It is not just "my packages are all up-to-date". It is not even "my packages require very low maintenance, that's why I'm not doing much". It is literally "I deliberately choose low-maintenance packages, so I don't have to do anything". But of course, all these people definitely need commit access to Gentoo, and show off their Gentoo developer badges, and it's *so damn unfair*.
And in the meantime, other developers are overburdened, and getting burned out. And they step down from more things. And who takes these things over? Of course, not the developers who just admitted to not having much to do…

Software innovation might be freezing in place—and AI could be to blame. Theo Browne points out that Copilot and ChatGPT often return React-style code even for Solid or Elixir projects. Why? Because they’ve seen React a million times more. Python 3 took a decade to overtake Python 2. If that transition had to happen today, would our dependence on AI suggestions keep us from making the jump?

I think I did only two things that really mattered to that org in the long term:
1. Stopped them from buying a really dubious CMS / web app engine that would have cost the org (a nonprofit) millions it didn’t have to be vendor-locked into a dead-end platform that would have set their site back years.
2. Selected a new developer hire who was far more dependable and mature than I was, and became their lynchpin. She wrote tons of software that did actually matter, and stayed with them for years.
Whatever dev skills I had turned out to be good for (1) saying “stop, don’t” and (2) recognizing an excellent person in a job interview. Note that neither involved the code I wrote.
