Existing authentication and authorization mechanisms establish identity and delegate authority, but do not inherently provide cryptographic evidence that a concrete request issued by a specific agent satisfies the applicable policy in a specific execution context. This paper hypothesizes that agent authorization can be formalized as a cryptographically verifiable relation, denoted $R_{CVA}$, that jointly binds an agent principal, a concrete authorization request, an execution context, and the satisfaction of an applicable policy, while selectively preserving the confidentiality of private authorization attributes. We introduce a preliminary formal abstraction for Cryptographically Verifiable Agent Authorization (CVA), define a compact set of candidate security properties including authorization soundness, principal binding, request binding, policy binding, and replay resistance, and provide an executable zero-knowledge proof of concept that instantiates selected elements of the model over a Groth16 zk-SNARK construction. We further identify and formalize the structural separation among identity binding, authorization-request binding, and runtime execution binding as a central open problem in the design of secure agentic systems (a distinction {not explicitly addressed by} current agentic security frameworks) and present a falsifiable research agenda for its resolution.

The thing about training an #LLM on human culture and then renting that culture back isn't that it's "Intellectual Property Theft." There's nothing wrong with sharing. There is something wrong with framing LLMs as piracy. That's a completely different concept.
When a powerful group of people takes the writing, the art, the music, various parts of a culture and then make some bland reproduction that lacks all the meaning and essence in the original, then those powerful people profit off that mess while the people who made the original stuff are erased, marginalized, and made to suffer, there is a different term for that.

Abstract: ETAS is a programming language for agent systems that treats model-backed agents, tool calls, prompts, typed memory, human approvals, policies, and execution traces as semantic program elements rather than library conventions. It separates deterministic computation from agentic nondeterminism and externally visible actions while preserving a direct programming style.
We present the core design of ETAS. Its static semantics assigns ordinary types through spec conformance and tracks each computation with two behavioral indices: an escaping effect row and a persistent abstraction of the typed action trace it may request. Specs form a terminating compile-time constraint calculus: type specs provide evidence for polymorphism and resource facts, callable specs constrain function and stage shapes, and trace specs express allow, deny, and temporal constraints. Typing checks requested traces against compiled monitors and emits residual obligations when dynamic resources preclude a complete static proof. The dynamic semantics distinguish requested, handled, denied, and committed events; handlers interpret typed actions without making their requests invisible to authorization or audit.
We formalize a core calculus and state preservation, progress, type/effect soundness, handler trace-transparency, and policy safety. We also implement ETAS in Rust with a command-line interface, typed HIR checks, effect and policy diagnostics, handler checks, and trace-aware execution hooks. ETAS provides a programming-language foundation for reasoning about authorization, nondeterminism, recovery, and audit evidence before and during agent execution.

Abstract: Time-resolved infrared spectroscopy probes protein dynamics over timescales spanning more than ten orders of magnitude, yet the molecular motions underlying the observed kinetic signatures have remained elusive. Here we combine transient infrared spectroscopy with nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations to establish a direct connection between experimental relaxation times and local structural motions. Studying single-domain allosteric proteins, we find that inter-residue contact distances provide the structural representation that most faithfully reproduces the experimental dynamics. Correlation analysis identifies localized networks of coordinated contacts that mediate communication between secondary-structure elements. The characteristic timescales of these contact networks quantitatively match the experimentally observed relaxation processes, enabling each kinetic step to be assigned to a specific molecular motion. Applied to allosteric signal propagation in PDZ3 and photoinduced ligand unbinding in PDZ2, this framework provides an atomistic picture of hierarchical protein relaxation and establishes a general framework for connecting transient infrared spectroscopy with the molecular mechanisms of protein dynamics.

Abstract: The proliferation of heterogeneous components in modern computing systems has been accompanied by new higher bandwidth and lower latency interconnects. These interfaces and protocols are enormously complex and the process of developing, debugging, and analyzing FPGA-based implementations requires significant engineering work. Moreover, once a functional implementation is completed, optimization of the controller and associated software requires processing potentially hundreds of gigabytes of trace data.
In this paper, we present Dryas, an open source tool for analyzing such an interconnect. We developed our tool, using minimal hardware resources, alongside an FPGA implementation of a very high speed, low latency (30~GiB/s, 200~ns) interconnect. With our run-time reprogrammable overlay engine we can inspect this interconnect to find rare, complex, or transient events even at full operation. This filtering engine is based on non-deterministic finite automata (NFAs), efficiently implemented using state transition elements (STEs), allowing us to trace events at a cache-line granularity. Moreover we can change the filters in less than a second, without reprogramming the FPGA or interfering with the running application. This data enables not only debugging the implementation of the interconnect itself, but analyzing the behavior of accelerated applications.
We examine the mathematical basis for using NFAs and describe their implementation on a real coherent CPU-FPGA research platform. We then evaluate the scalability of Dryas for various size NFAs, followed by two different use cases: debugging FPGA implementation of the interconnect and analyzing cache behavior.

Just finished "Salvage" by Renée Nault. I'm a sucker for romances in general and for characters like these, so I enjoyed it a lot, even though I wish works like this would actually address the structural issues they bring up more thoroughly. I tend to think about the messages of a work in terms of counterfactuals. For example, how would this story play out of Paolo hadn't been a good artist, or hadn't been so likeable, etc.
Also: how do the wealth differences play out in the end? Paolo & his family might escape poverty by association, but where I their community does these line get drawn and the rest get left behind? The natural true "good ending" for all these cross-class romances is an anarchist revolution, but so rarely do we get to see that... The alternative is to believe that only some of the lower class deserve being saved because of their virtues, which ends up being a toxic and regressive message.
To be fair, I think Nault pulls off an above-average landing for this trope, and her illustrations of the lower-class communities and their own richness are hopeful. I just always find myself wanting more.
All of that aside, Nault's art is truly wonderful, especially her use of color and the way she uses it consistently to emphasize thematic elements. It's a really beautiful graphic novel.

Recently finished "Noor" by Nnedi Okorafor. I'd enjoyed her book "Binti" but to me this was even better (it also has a different target audience). "Noor" has a lot of great things, like an interesting exploration of some of the conflicting ideas of physical transhumanism, a rich historical perspective on the interplay between a few different Nigerian cultures, and a brief glimpse at an alternative society of outcasts. It doesn't have the deep exploration of the outcast society I would have loved, but that would have been a very different story, and I don't begrudge Okorafor writing this one instead. I do think that the "corporate evils are finally exposed" ending elements ring hollow and have for some years now, but I can also understand how monumental an effort it is to write a truly compelling happy ending in our current age. Overall, a really good book, and yet more confirmation to me that the marginalized voices so long kept out of literature in general and science fiction in particular have a deep wealth of perspective to offer when they graciously choose to do so.

We developed patch2vuln to facilitate the creation of security advisories directly from Git patches.
With a single command, patch2vuln can assist an analyst throughout the advisory creation process: analyzing the patch, drafting the vulnerability title and description, identifying CWE and CAPEC mappings, proposing a CVSS v4.0 vector, extracting affected versions, remediation information and credits, and generating a structured CVE/GCVE record.
The analysis can run entirely locally using an LLM via Ollama, while deterministic processing is used for elements such as CVSS scoring and structured output validation.
The goal is not to replace the security analyst, but to remove much of the repetitive work and provide a solid structured draft for human review and publication.
patch2vuln v1.0 is now available as open-source software under the @… Lab initiative.

Just fished "Coldwire" by Chloe Gong. An interesting and well-written cyberpunk thriller, even though it didn't have the social-imaginative elements I was looking for. I liked the reveal, and the overall construction, even if I felt that a lot of things were a bit off, and I'm not sure how I feel about an ultimately-optimistic-about-technical-possibilities view of the future right now, especially after reading Vinge's "A Deepness in the Sky" just recently which offers an idea of a future that's less optimistic (even if it dilutes that a bit towards the end).
Even if Gong's imagined future doesn't feel like it has anything interesting to say about either how to get to or sustain a more libratory society, it's a fun book and I'm definitely somewhat interested in the potential for a sequel.

Just finished "Healer of the Water Monster" by Brian Young. I'm reading a bunch of juvenile fiction right now in a quest to have some good recommendations for my kids to read in a few years when they're old enough, and this one definitely makes the cut, with deeply-integrated #OwnVoices Diné cultural elements, good (to my reading) handling of complex topics like divorce and depression, and cool magical elements. This is exactly the kind of new generation of kids' fiction I'm looking for that drops the regressive themes present in so much of what I read at that age. For example, I just before this I read Howl's Moving Castle and then The House of Many Ways by Dianna Wynne Jones, and while the first was pretty much great, the sequel has a whole benevolent monarchy thing that's central to the book in a way that weighs down the politics of the book a lot. Unsurprisingly, the indigenous perspective is a refreshing one.

Just finished "Rialto" by Kate Milford. A wonderful book with a *lot* of things to like but also a few I wish had been done differently.
Starting with the good stuff, an #OwnVoices portrayal of anxiety depression is always welcome, *especially* one that portrays positive coping strategies, including active therapy, and complex but ultimately supportive family dynamics. Dad & daughter each reminding each other to use calming strategies at different points in the book was lovely, and getting to see the complexities of the trying to be a supportive sibling was great! Larger than that aspect, portraying a YA adventure in which the parents are actively involved but don't spoil things is so great and must have been difficult to pull off. Most YA stuff quickly ushers the parents out of the picture, and this fails to provide any kind of positive or negative role model for parent/child interaction. This book had ample examples of the former, *and* let the kids have plenty of agency too. Excellent stuff that I absolutely want to see more of.
So what didn't I like?
First, as an anarchist, I always hate to see unapologetically positive (and thus drastically unrealistic) portrayals of the police. Without getting into spoilers, even the stuff about the Piepowder court bothered me. It's presented here as a cutesy alternate court tradition, but I can't help but speculate that these courts were likely not always fair in practice, and the whole "single person makes immediate judgments model" from this book is terrible in general. I just don't like positive portrayals of terrible systems that happen to be good because the people involved are good people, since they reinforce harmful positive mental models of "justice" that don't apply to the real world. This element wasn't enough to totally spoil the book for me (the plot could have mostly functioned without it) but it's a downside to me.
Second, the book is set in rural Missouri, and has plenty of Black characters. Yay for representation? Certainly better than the cast being all-white given the setting. But the book doesn't have any Black *culture* that I picked up on, and it chooses to try to completely sidestep the relevant history. Maybe I'm just not attuned to elements that were there; if anyone who read this did see them feel free to point them out. The history definitely isn't there though... for example, was the park segregated, or not? During the time it was active one imagines most parks would have been, and that if it hadn't been that would have been a very important difference, which would even have been relevant to the plot and themes of the book as written.
Now perhaps this critique is unfair because Black children and young adults *should* get to see themselves portrayed in cozy fantasies without things always having to be about racism... In a choice between erasing Black characters and erasing racism (and especially racist histories) maybe there's no right answer here and this is fine, actually. My instinct tells me that there are ways to do better, though, and that presenting a history with all the racism carefully elided isn't the greatest compromise to make here.
A while ago I read "Under the Heron's Light" by Randi Pink. It also has mythical animal guides, a Southern setting, helpful family members, a multi-generational mystery to solve, and a (slightly older) teen protagonist who is up to the task. In contrast, it is all about racist history, and takes us through multiple extremely harrowing scenes from the past.
In any case, this discomfort also wasn't a deal-breaker for me, in part because, as I said, I think it's probably good for Black children to see uncomplicatedly positive representations of people like them alongside the plenty of stuff out there that does get deep into the racism and history. I also don't have the best perspective to judge this stuff, although that doesn't mean I should default to "it's probably fine" (I'd be happy to hear from anyone who feels they have a better perspective on this, about this book or the trend in general...).
Overall, I enjoyed Rialto quite a lot. I don't think it quite makes it into my top tier of recommendations for my kids, but I think it does make the list somewhere.
