Railway is technically a PaaS (like Heroku). “serverless” because you don’t have to maintain the operating system. They have evolved buildpacks to Railpacks which will create containers on the fly.

Hundreds of animals killed by trains on B.C. railways, documents reveal. So, what’s being done to stop it?
CN reported 340 wildlife collisions between 2020 and 2023, These numbers include 202 collisions involving moose and 67 involving bears.
CPKC reported 182 animals were killed and injured by trains in the Kootenay region of B.C. in 2022 and 2023.

I enjoy LLMs the most when they are augmenting my existing skillset. I've lost count of how many demo APIs I've built with FastAPI for workshops but Claude built this one, configured it for deployment to Railway (a first for me), wrote the mildly amusing sample data I wanted, and switched to Scalar for docs with no fuss.
While I carry on with content I actually wanted to cover without getting bogged down in the details of the demo that's only there to let the attendees try some skills!

Abstract: Periodic timetables are widely adopted in passenger railway operations due to their regular service patterns and well-coordinated train connections. However, fluctuations in passenger demand require varying train services across different periods, necessitating adjustments to the periodic timetable. This study addresses a hybrid periodic train timetabling problem, which enhances the flexibility and demand responsiveness of a given periodic timetable through schedule adjustments and aperiodic train insertions, taking into account the rolling stock circulation. Since timetable modifications may affect initial passenger routes, passenger routing is incorporated into the problem to guide planning decisions towards a passenger-oriented objective. Using a time-space network representation, the problem is formulated as a dynamic railway service network design model with resource constraints. To handle the complexity of real-world instances, we propose a decomposition-based algorithm integrating Benders decomposition and column generation, enhanced with multiple preprocessing and accelerating techniques. Numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm and highlight the advantage of hybrid periodic timetables in reducing passenger travel costs.

One of the absolute best things about #portalberni is the No7 Steam Train. It was under repairs for a few years and boy did we miss it but this year it has run on many weekends. It’s doing Santa runs along the waterfront and rail yard every Friday and Saturday afternoon and evening to Christmas!
