Looking for other people here who're interested in analog "alt process" photography (especially Kallitype & salt prints in general) and who are also making their own prints. There used to be a few more such people in my TL, but they all seem to have vanished or stopped posting in the past year, and generally it feels there's precious little interest in this topic on Mastodon... (I too have a feeling, either my own photography went drastically downhill over the past 3-4 …

Just finished "The Raven Boys," a graphic novel adaptation of a novel by Maggie Stiefvater (adaptation written by Stephanie Williams and illustrated by Sas Milledge).
I haven't read the original novel, and because of that, this version felt way too dense, having to fit huge amounts of important details into not enough pages. The illustrations are gorgeous and the writing is fine; the setting and plot have some pretty interesting aspects... It's just too hard to follow a lot of the threads, or things we're supposed to care about aren't given the time/space to feel important.
The other thing that I didn't like: one of the central characters is rich, and we see this reflected in several ways, but we're clearly expected to ignore/excuse the class differences within the cast because he's a good guy. At this point in my life, I'm simply no longer interested in stories about good rich guys very much. It's become clear to me how in real life, we constantly get the perspectives of the rich, and rarely if ever hear the perspectives of the poor (same applies across racial and gender gradients, among others). Why then in fiction should I get more of the same, spending my mental bandwidth building empathy for yet another dilettante who somehow has a heart of gold? I'm tired of that.

Listened to half of the digital foundry video. The steam machine, AKA GabeCube, will have 16G of replaceable sodimm (laptop) memory.
Video memory it's probably soldered and a bit anemic, but (my guess) if the GPU can read system memory fast enough, it might even work out just fine! Ray tracing consumes a lot of extra video memory, so that's probably the biggest concern.
We'll see, I'm definitely interested to see where this goes!

But what if there were? And what if it was territorial expansion for its own sake? What if it was, in a word, imperialism? Those on the radio this morning entertained all sorts of increasingly odd theories but, somehow, empire-building was a bridge too far.

If you're interested in the #aquarium hashtag, there's a new @… bot that replaced the old a.gup.pe bot.
For those who don’t know, these bots exist because when you look for a a hashtag, your server only checks the posts that have been federated to it.
In order for a message to be federated to your server, the author (or one of the people boosting it) have to be followed by someone on your server. If no one touching the message is being followed, it’ll never get federated to your server and you won’t see it.
So yes, hashtags are great, but they don’t help message propagation.

Part 3 - Moving forward
One of Mastodon's strengths is its decentralized structure. That also means no centralized marketing or development strategy focused on growth, particularly in Canada. Perhaps a volunteer group could take on that development plan and grow the Canadian user base.
- A vision of what an ideal future state would look like would benefit the planning and action steps. Collecting input from Canadian admins is recommended.
- We shouldn't burden existing admins beyond their current responsibilities. Volunteers would take actions like reaching out to politicians or government agencies.
Potential next steps:
1) Host a web meeting with interested Canadian admins to collect input on a shared vision for this project.
2) Collect volunteers who would be interested in reaching out to politicians or government agencies about creating a presence on Mastodon.
3) Select members of the group to be part of a steering committee.
4) Create a unique hashtag for this project for reporting and followers.

Odd etymological question: I was interested today in whether the Soviet word for a labour camp, Gulag, was related to the Nazi-era German word for a prisoner of war camp, Stalag. Gulag is apparently a contraction of 'Гла́вное управле́ние исправи́тельно-трудовы́х лагере́й', where the last word transliterates as 'lageréy', while Stalag is a contraction of 'Kriegsgefangenen-Mannschaftsstammlager'. 1) missing words and simple typos - My ADHD brain skips words coming out and fulls them in when reading, so it's easy for me to make mistakes and hard for me to catch them.
2) questions - I tend to work from a lot of assumed knowledge, collected from all over, and I'm really trying to make my work more accessible. I assume I'm talking about a bunch of stuff most folks don't know, but I don't know which of them come from some rabbit hole I went down and which are more common knowledge.
3) challenges - I get bored when having things explained to me so I have a tendency to keep explanations light... Which can mean I leave out a bunch of critical context or logical steps.
