To be clear: with these people I always look to opportunism before conspiracy to explain their actions — but when you have this kind of rapidly convergent manufactured consensus within a political group, the distinction between those two becomes blurry.
Looking for malicious premeditation is probably just pursuing a red herring. I’m more interested in how they form their response, what they’re doing to try to shape public conversation, social media, the press.

During the past 5 months, the armed forces have sent questionnaires about the voluntary military service to 300k 18-year-old Germans.
90% of the men (who are required to fill out the form) answered immediately, further 6% after being reminded (the others are facing fines). ¼ of the replying men were initially interested, and ½ of them remained so after being called.
1500 of them were examined for their fitness for service, and 80% passed. ~530 were finally recruited.

An update on the status of the race for my House seat: When I last posted about it, the 2 Dems interested in running for it were Jason Quinno and Tom Brennan. However, they have decided to run for the floterial instead, so now Nate Giffard is running for my seat. I met him today, and he seems good. Since he is now the only Dem running for the seat, I'd like to officially endorse him for the position. He's running on a platform of housing, general affordability, and civil rights. Hmmm the Garmins look interesting!
The Venu 4 (and Forerunner 970, tho that’s way too big for my wrist and more expensive) have most of what I want, and their phone app is optional!!
Not sure exactly what features I’d be missing with no phone connection (specially considering that it has no lte/mobile data), tho the phone app supports both iOS and Android so maybe once Bluetooth on Waydroid is a thing I could get that to work too!
I don’t think I’d be missing anything from my current Apple Watch (s5) or even from newer AWes other than the Ultras (which are also too big for my wrist, and too expensive). The Ultras have a depth sensor for diving which is really really cool, while the FR and Venu aren’t water resistant enough for that (Garmin has a way more specialised smartwatch for that, with a mostly non-overlapping featureset).
Both the FR and the Venu are rated for swimming, which is cool, but neither of those are proper for diving (I don’t really dive, tho that’s something I’m interested in trying out in the future). I think it should be safe enough for when I go around swimming in the pool or beach tho? Well, I don’t usually keep my Apple Watch on when swimming anyway. It’s just nice to know that if I were to get more sportive about that it’d be a possibility.
I think the only disadvantage of the Venu compared to the FR is the lack of a Maps app, tho that’s totally fine ig. Also no HR while swimming and less storage. The FR is 2mm bigger than my current 45mm s5 apple watch, and I already find this too big. The Venu has a 41mm option which is what I’d get if I decided to go for it.
OH AND THEY BOTH HAVE SUPER PRETTY COLOR OPTIONS, INCLUDING A LAVANDER ONE FOR THE VENU!! :blobcataww:
(the FR has lots of very pretty options too!!)
This is mostly just brainstorming rn, but does anyone around here have any experience with the Garmin smartwatches? It’d be nice to see opinions from someone who owns one of them :3

Would any of y'all be interested in an archival curation tool that can handle merging large collections of files?
I'm in the middle of designing something — git is inspiration but the wrong tool for this job — but that allows reintegrating diverged collections of materials, and propagating enough information that if you were to merge two folders, you'd get a relevant set of questions about the contents to successfully and meaningfully merge them.
It's aware of the fact that embedded metadata changes.
My goal is to make a library simple enough that one could embed it in an operating system's file browser to surface intelligent behavior, and that it could form the basis of media servers too, taking the scanning-and-recording-files duties.

For #ThrowbackThursday - a set of scanned photo prints from my 1997 visit at the Oberwolfach institute followed by some tourist time in Frankfurt. Apparently at the time I was more interested in photos of landscapes than of the other famous visitors at the workshop on Schubert varieties.

Hey @… new cursed idea if you're interested: QSFP to 4x RJ45 Ethernet module. I'm not sure if 4 rows, 4 columns, or 2x2 would look more absurd.
As far as i can tell it's technically possible but doesn't exist, i hope it never is created, but I'd love to see just how derpy it would look lol

My office right now.
A reasonable person could be forgiven for thinking I'm a kindergarten teacher, and not preparing materials for a college introduction to programming course.
(Let me know if you're interested in what those activities are...)
(And also a Foundations of AI course, but first, the intro course.)

Huh! Interested to hear more of the science behind this — and to hear it summarized, because I’m not likely to jump into a 94-minute podcast episode just this minute.

Hi there fellow space-interested nerds, the "Pluto" thing that's happening right now is a deliberate political stunt to distract from that NASA and science in general in the US are being gutted; please don't fall for or amplify it.
Carry on.

What I was most interested in, in the open sourced DOS listing, is whether there were any uses of INT 21h (TSR). There are! And they are all in the chkdsk code. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terminat

It is clear Trump is totally not interested in helping to put the war between Russia and Ukraine to an end, he is totally distracted by his self-created war with Iran. Where he is also clearly not in control. He lets Israël basically decide that the fighting should continue.

There are a lot of possible explanations for this:
Maybe the people who aren’t interested in AI also happen to vote for more sessions. (At a quick prod at the data, penalizing votes from people who voted for large numbers of sessions does not seem to change the conclusions above, but I haven’t investigated this thoroughly.)
Maybe AI is a more fragmented topic due to its newness, and interest has not coalesced, leading to a large number of small sessions. (But again, •total• votes for AI, including the whole long tail, were proportionally smaller.)

Thinking of submitting a tech talk on ngscopeclient to Vulkanised 2027.
This will be focusing on the architecture and some GPU acceleration tricks, more so than the feature set and end user side of things (i.e. the intended audience is GPU shader developers, some of which I hope to get interested in joining the project).
I'm throwing around potential titles, so far the best I have is "Real Time GB/s Oscilloscope Waveform Processing" but I'm sure I can improve on…

Modern industrial fertilisers are made from fossil hydrocarbons. In future we can't use that. But, although I am prejudiced in favour of #organic agriculture, I'd be interested to know whether it would be possible to synthesise fertiliser from widely available resources without using fossil hydrocarbon.
Anyone got any pointers?
