"Value each part of a corporate ecosystem, from the factory worker to the competitor next door. Be altruistic and self-interested at the same time: if you have success, invest your proceeds in nascent and innovative companies.
And don’t try to save pennies in manufacturing or other built-up know-how by outsourcing, if it could lose you pounds (or billions of Swiss Francs) down the line."
One thing I like about ChatGPT is it seems completely non-homophobic. I taught it I'm gay and interested in queer theory and it regularly volunteers queer readings of things when appropriate. I ask it "which season of this TV show is the gayest?" and it gives me a clear answer with no prevarication. It seems fully neutral and yet also fully understanding of queer thinking.
> personally, I was interested in cognitive science, partly because I was like, “all this linguistic stuff has no application. It’s pure science. It won’t be turned into a tool against the working class or into a weapon or something.” And then this stuff happens. And I’m like, well, fuck, that was a miscalculation from my part.

Two things are worth noticing right now:
1. The military brass *did not* respond well to Trump and Hegseth.
2. The deployment to #Portland keeps getting delayed.
The military will never say "no" to the president (unless he's literally ordering them to open fire on unarmed civilians or something equally obviously illegal). But there are ways to not comply that don't necessarily involve refusal. Brass showing that they aren't aligned with Trump may weaken his billionaire backers, who might be realizing now that weak dictators who can't lead their militaries tend to get toppled... and their oligarch-backers tend to end up against walls.
If folks being ordered to send troops to #PDX don't want to comply, delaying until the there's an initial response from the lawsuit would be basically impossible to detect. The deployment to LA went far too fast, running into logistical challenges like troops sleeping on the floor. The delays we've already seen could indicate either a more careful approach or quiet resistance.
Trump will continue to escalate at every chance he gets. I would be surprised if PDX didn't give him a fight. I doubt the troops will become more interested in serving a guy who's stabbed them in the back and wasted their time at every opportunity.
It is still possible troops just won't deploy. Trump will make something up about how just the threat of an intervention was enough to make things safe or something like that. If we see that, it's 100% the military telling him to kick rocks because he's not competent enough to know when to back down.
Honestly, I think Trump wants revenge for the resistance PDX put up at the end of his last term. Any backing down from that is absolutely a big loss for him.

The conference is over now. I likely wouldn't have come for just a bitcoin thing, but I am very interested in redecentralizing the web, so it's attachment to the nostr day pulled me in.
Everyone I met was friendly and interesting and seems much more interested in making a better money system than in making money for themselves.
Our government and bank money systems are dysfunctional in all kinds of ways which are often less visible than they should be too people using them, especially to those in Europe and America who benefit from the way those systems exploit the global south.
I'm not convinced that fixing that would end wars and fix broken government as some seem to think, but I am sure our money is the source of many problems.
There are many bright, well meaning, and intelligent people building to improve bitcoin in fascinating ways with the hope of having a parallel system to transition to. With lots of work still to be done.
Can it work?
I'm sure I don't know, and I'm sure even if it's a better system it'll come with it's own unfairness and cruelty. Money will continue to be a source of suck and worry.
I'm told that the bigger conferences are often full of shitcoin scammers and suit wearing banksters who are in fact all in it too get rich and rip people off, but I found none of that here.
Here there is a real community of people trying to make the world a better place and improve the lives of their neighbours and governance of their countries.
And in the end building community is the most radical and effective way to change the world regardless of the problems of it's money system.
I had a great time. Thanks to those organising it.

I finished "Dear Wendy" by Ann Zhao a few days ago. It's a lovely platonic "romance" that deals explicitly with aro/ace identity, post-coming-out identity work as opposed to the initial realization journey, and Wellesley College student culture (although if unlike me that's not relevant to you, it's not like you need to be interested in this to enjoy the book).
It felt slightly weird to be reading a book by someone who I'm pretty sure could have been in one of my classes (but as far as I am remember wasn't). Probably would not have read it were it a normal romance, because that would have made character empathy super awkward. In any case, it feels useful to get an inside perspective on almost-contemporary student culture, especially the part that's a reminder of how many students love the liberal and progressive aspects of said culture, despite its flaws.
Super enjoyable and honestly pretty cozy book.

I'm especially interested in a few things if anyone is willing to help...
1) missing words and simple typos - My ADHD brain skips words coming out and fulls them in when reading, so it's easy for me to make mistakes and hard for me to catch them.
2) questions - I tend to work from a lot of assumed knowledge, collected from all over, and I'm really trying to make my work more accessible. I assume I'm talking about a bunch of stuff most folks don't know, but I don't know which of them come from some rabbit hole I went down and which are more common knowledge.
3) challenges - I get bored when having things explained to me so I have a tendency to keep explanations light... Which can mean I leave out a bunch of critical context or logical steps.

I’ve been really interested in both aspects of this post:
1. ICE right-wing fringe groups conspicuously steered clear of protests yesterday in a way that suggests that orders went out (whose?) and/or (I’m guessing “and”) that there’s a sense from those people that they don’t have public support and don’t have free license to instigate violence.
2. Police went out of their way to put on a friendly face. I’ve been getting vibes that some local police resent ICE — “this is OUR turf, beating up Black and brown people was OUR job” — and, contrary to what we and the regime might expect, ICE isn’t always getting free support by default from that quarter.
Caveats: No solid conclusions here, just reading vibes. And even if it is actually true for now, all of this can shift on a dime. Still, sure is notable. https://fed.brid.gy/r/https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:mxc7liuon6iq5gzapmmwkq22/post/3m3krd3w4s22k

Day 5: Robin Wall Kimmerer
I'm taking these liberty of changing my hashtag and expanding the intent of this list to include all non-men, although Kimerer is a woman so I'll get to more gender diversity later... I've also started planning this out more and realized that I may continue a bit beyond 20...
In any case, Robin Wall Kimmerer is an Indigenous academic biologist and excellent non-fiction author whose work touches on Potawotomi philosophy, colonialism (including in academic spaces), and ideas for a better future. Anyone interested in ecology, conservation, or decolonization in North America will probably be impressed by her work and the rich connections she weaves between academic ecology and Indigenous knowledge offer a critical opportunity to expand your understanding of the world if like me you were raised deeply enmeshed in "Western" scientific tradition. I suppose a little background in skepticism helped prepare me to respect her writing, but I don't think that's essential.
I've only read "Braiding Sweetgrass," but "Gathering Moss" and her more recent "The Serviceberry" are high on my to-read list, despite my predilection for fiction. Kimmerer incorporates a backbone of fascinating anecdotes into "Braiding Sweetgrass" that makes it surprisingly easy reading for a work that's philosophical at its core. She also pulls off an impressive braided organization to the whole thing, weaving together disparate knowledges in a way that lets you see both their contradictions and their connections.
The one criticism I've seen of her work is that it's not sufficiently connected to other Indigenous philosophers & writers, and that it's perhaps too comfortable of a read for colonizers, and that seems valid to me, even though (perhaps because I am a colonizer) I still find her book important.
An excellent author in any case, and one doing concrete ideological work towards a better world.

Odd etymological question: I was interested today in whether the Soviet word for a labour camp, Gulag, was related to the Nazi-era German word for a prisoner of war camp, Stalag. Gulag is apparently a contraction of 'Гла́вное управле́ние исправи́тельно-трудовы́х лагере́й', where the last word transliterates as 'lageréy', while Stalag is a contraction of 'Kriegsgefangenen-Mannschaftsstammlager'.
