❝I have noticed that we people privileged by supremacy have a tendency to take this same stance toward newly aware people, a stance which is not ours to assume. We seem to feel that it is our business to meet people who are in the same place that we were just a few short years or decades ago, and meet their shock and surprise and anger and dismay with a skepticism and an impatience we haven't earned.
We say things like "are you surprised?"
We say things like "why does this shock you?"
We say "oh so you're only angry now?"
We say things like "where have you been?"

Instead of asking “are you surprised?” say “I was surprised once, too; here's what I know.” Instead of “what took you so long?” say “I just got here recently; here's what I've learned.”❞ mastodon.social/@JuliusGoat/11

"Be careful with this message.

I sent it while logged in to GMail using multiple authentication steps from my home network using a secure laptop. What are they talking about? Serious question: how could they not verify it? It's either an idiotic engineering problem on their end or I'm terrified that security is meaningless. Probably both.

Tonight #Maven and Maven Exec plugin in combination with Weld brought me to me knees.
Weld refused to load my classes and resources even if Maven reports compilation is successful, I can see the classes in target/classes, and when using -X I see it adds the jars and target/classes to the classpath.
Still Weld throws a bunch of ClassNotFound exceptions.
To make things a lot worse, there're no good hits when searching.

If you're trying to do the trick that was shared for #nintendoswitch2 where you can use a USB HDMI capture dongle HDMI to USB-C cable to use your iPhone as a camera - don't use the True Visage app mentioned in the video
That will rely on screen sharing mirroring and you'll potentially get an aspect ratio mismatch and see the dynamic island floating in your view
I'd personally suggest the free "Blackmagic Camera" app instead, and then go to:
Settings->Monitor->HDMI Out
Switch from Mirror Display to Video Feed and it will cleanly output your camera. Works for a Lightning to HDMI out adapter for older phones, too
Then just tap on Lense and FPS and pick which combo you like.
Also, if you're not getting any output signal make sure the capture dongle you're using supports 1080p out - not sure the Switch 2 supports anything higher as camera input

The top 2 rows of demos I'll likely buy near release (depends on pricing, of course!) The next row I'll likely buy at some stage, the final 2 rows ... perhaps not for me.

So the main "arguments" when I say "AI doesn't work" and "it will collapse" are:
1. "You don't know what you're talking about"
2. "It's inevitable and here to stay, might as well go with the program"
3. "But it's almost there! Just last week they released [name of model] that is so close!"
Literally no one ever replies with any concrete examples with how it reliably, ethically and non-wastefully works for them to increase their productivity and improve their and other people's lives in any meaningful way.
It's always ad hominems, hypotheticals or deeply flawed "it sort of works for this".

One of the most important lessons I've learned in life / continue to learn / managed to forget is the importance of "stopping." It is so easy for life to become overwhelming with all the things I must do. Work, family, friends, volunteering, community, finances, chores, taking care of my health, the list goes on...
"Life is a very simple thing. We make it more complex." - Anonymous
"When we are making our life more complex, that is precisely the time when we are totally incapable of seeing what we are doing. The more complex our lives are, the more we need to be present to them and, surprisingly, this is exactly the time when we are most distracted. When we are distracted, we tend to have poor judgment and make more mistakes . . . usually adding to the confusion . . . and so it goes."
"....We usually respond by trying to become even more controlling and, eventually (or immediately!), this just makes things worse."
"It's time to stop, take stock, take some deep breaths, rest, listen to others, and regroup...We may miss something. We may even miss something we think is important. That's okay. We're more important."
"Taking time to stop may be just what I need to move ahead."
-- Anne Wilson Schaef, Meditations for People Who (May) Worry Too Much, Ballantine Books, 1996, entry for May 6th.

My first job out of college, I successfully built several high-profile executive darling software projects. I was celebrated for it (someone once use the phrase “white knight,” yikes), which was heady for a 20-something fresh out of college.
Despite that, I don’t think a single one of those projects actually mattered diddly to the company in the long term.

Puh. #HomeAssistant wirft native Installationen und 32Bit-Systeme (incl. ARM) ausm Support. Sehr schade. :/

This is a dangerous level of squinting at tea leaves, so •serious• grain of salt here, but:
The sudden re-plunge of Tesla’s stock price during this Musk / Trump spat suggests that maybe, maybe its utterly wild overvaluation had nothing to do with Tesla’s products, or its market position, or Musk’s phony brilliance, or even (the usual explanation) with investors getting hyped about a self-driving car future and magical robots.
Maybe it was investors expecting the company to be the beneficiary of kleptocratic pillaging of the US Federal budget. Which — unlike all the other explanations — would not be an irrational expectation.

Totoro spoilers
Re the quoted post from @…:
The very first time I saw My Neighbor Totoro, it was because a friend cajoled me into attending the student anime club’s showing with absolutely no context whatsoever except “you •have• to see this movie, Paul.” I had no idea what genre it was. I had no idea that it was a movie considered suitable for kids. The last anime I’d seen was IIRC Ghost in the Shell; I was ready for anything.
When Mei went missing, I thought, “omg, is this a tragedy? I think this story is a tragedy!” The whole time they were looking for her, I was absolutely terrified. I thought for sure they’d found her sandal. I still tear up when they find her now, on every rewatching.
I’m so glad for that first viewing. It’s a much better movie that way. When you’re expecting an innocent movie about cute forest plushies, you see that. But when you see that it could be a tragedy — the mother’s shadowy illness, the lost child — it hits hard. wandering.shop/@Violinknitter/

Re that second remark, “The *point* of AI is to make cognitive abilities irrelevant,” well, that’s the thing that’s up for debate right now. Making cognitive abilities (and thus labor, and people) irrelevant is very much the marketing pitch of the hype bubble. That pitch is about cost cutting, and about fear and intimidation — an intoxicating, investor-frothing mixture of fantasy and terror.
It’s not the only vision of AI, however.

#Steam #Apple #macOS PSA for my fellow #gaming friends
If you're attempting to patch in Game Porting Toolkit 3 beta 1 libraries into CrossOver and following the instructions in the Evaluation environment for Windows games 3.0 beta 1 README - there is a missing step which will likely cause your Steam's steamwebhelper.exe binaries to crash repeatedly.
In addition to ditto'ing over the "external" folder that the instructions mention - you also need to ditto over the "wine" folder as well to the same lib64/apple_gptk destination
Doing both of those things, I was successful in getting it running in CrossOver Preview (20250507 / 26.0.0.39135)
