It is not AI that is driving tech layoffs. It’s the massive change in R&D writeoff rules that kicked in for TY2022, from the 2017 Trump tax bill.
The ability to “expense” R&D costs was in place for decades and arguably drove US innovation by making it cheap. Now R&D is amortized over 5 years for US work, 15 years for non-US work. The current reconciliation bill would bring back expensing of domestic R&D costs.

Politically driven "focus on special features over ensuring affordable housing money is stretched as far as possible" is one part of this, and same thing happens in transit:

Just finished "Statistically Speaking" by Debbie Johnson. It's coincidentally the second book dealing with adoption that I've just finished, though I suspect in both cases not #OwnVoices, which I also suspect matters somewhat. I was well-absorbed and enjoyed it immensely, but was left again with the reservation that I'm sure it may reflect only that small facet of real life which is pleasing and/or tolerable to a wide audience, and may thus in its own way make things more difficult for those whose realities it does not reflect. I find myself very glad to have also recently read Mama by Nikkya Hargrove, which is autobiographical and which as a result of having more real-world complexity drives its similar point about found family home with more force, to me (to be fair, Johnson's work has a decent amount of real life complexity, for a novel).

Fun fact: #Windows 95 (and in some cases the later versions) had a very suboptimal implementation of idle state — they would run a busy loop, heating the CPU unnecessarily. Of course, you could work around this by installing a third-party program that would detect this state and use a more optimal HLT instruction instead.
So you could say that the purpose of such a program was to pretend that it's doing something, so that the system wouldn't fall into its own idle loop.

My department has just opened a call for a professor in Philosophy (area of philosophical expertise pretty much open).
The department is great, and Umeå is a lovely place to live and work in. Come join us!

This channel is an unofficial mirror of Bernadette Banner’s YouTube content. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Bernadette Banner and may be removed if she requests.
She is one of my favorite creators on YouTube, so I’ve synchronized and published her videos on PeerTube, while the rest is currently being transcoded and should be available by tomorrow!

Bernadette Banner stands beside a vintage mannequin in a softly lit studio, holding a pencil as she prepares to work on a historical garment.

The space reflects her dedication to recreating clothing using traditional sewing techniques and authentic materials.

She wears a dark jacket with detailed embroidery, embodying her passion for craftsmanship and historical fashion.

In "holy-crap-that-was-too-difficult", reworked the Jekyll build script to work using the `ruby:alpine` container. I just want the site to build without having to go through the hoops of installing `ruby` and getting `bundle` to do what I want it to. A nice Docker Compose file gets it done nice and quickly without fuss. Also I don't have random gems installed around my system.

Stalled on getting MSFS 2024 to run, but did clean off the desk a bit. Not the best case scenario, but figured a nice lazy Saturday just relaxing would work out well.
