Using (cargo) bikes to get shit done. Had to pick up the car after getting new tires installed, so on the way home from work swapped cargo bike for car at the gas station, drove home, rode the 3-speed back to the garage, and towed it home behind the cargo bike.
The cost of the car repair was equal to the cost of the Big Dummy's frame (though not in inflation-adjusted dollars, the Big Dummy is 16 years old).

View from the rear of a black Raleigh ALL STEEL 3-speed with its front wheel lashed into the sling of a Big Dummy, both parked in front of the gas station.
Side view of the black Raleigh ALL STEEL 3-speed with its rear wheel lashed into the rear sling of the Big Dummy.
Close up of the wheel in the sling, showing how it is strapped into place. The built-in sling straps fasten through the spokes to hold the wheel tight, and a pair of red extensions straps (one extending the other) hold the bottom of the wheel tight to the inside of the sling, and a single red extension strap around the snap deck holds the front, top of the wheel tight to the snap deck. A crumpled blue Ikea bag between wheel axle and sling provides padding and protection.

It's even worse among junior and would-be sysadmins.
I constantly see people worried about mature free email software that goes for a year or more without new releases or even commits. That can be reasonable for complex tools, but sometimes a piece of software is small enough in scope that it can be *done* and actually bug-free.
The only way old software goes bad is when it is asked to work in an environment that it was not built for.

From Monday onwards the Icelandic postal service will be severely limiting the types of parcels that can be sent to the US. The same goes for quite a few European countries. The reason is because of the way Trump's new tariffs are structured.
Evidently a lot of extra work is supposed to be carried out by the postal service in each country. I can't really describe what the problem is, mostly the new system seems confusing and is likely in breach of international agreements.

And if you really want to push candidates left, you do what the Black Panthers did. You provide the service you want to see so the government is forced to play catch up. If you build the world you want to see, you force the state to follow you in order to remain relevant. You make enforcing unjust laws impossible while providing the service to believe should exist. THAT is direct action that wins.
Edit: and that is also shit that will get you killed. If you want to stop fascism, you have to do the real work. Voting can only matter if it's part of a larger strategy to force the system to do what you want. Otherwise you're just legitimizing the managed resistance.

Okay, time to continue bashing. Perhaps this one project is just that bad, but Conan sounds like a complete antithesis of what a package manager is all about.
Well, this package insists to build its dependencies via Conan. Except it insists on really old versions that don't work with my glibc. So I need to start swapping dependencies.
Except it turns out Conan doesn't care much about resolving dependencies. So I actually need to start adjust versions of the dependencies of packages that it wants to build. And then it starts rebuilding other stuff and again everything fails because of incompatible versions.
And when I finally manage to find a working set, the actual project fails over protobuf version. After a long WTF-ing, I finally realize that it's complaining, because it somehow managed to mix the version of protobuf built by Conan and the external protobuf installed by Conda.
So yeah, great job. A package manager that doesn't really resolve dependencies but instead forces a dependency hell on you, and on top of that ends up mixing system packages with its own packages.

"A confusing contradiction is unfolding in companies embracing generative AI tools: while workers are largely following mandates to embrace the technology, few are seeing it create real value. [...] In collaboration with Stanford Social Media Lab, our research team at BetterUp Labs has identified one possible reason: Employees are using AI tools to create low-effort, passable looking work that ends up creating more work for their coworkers."

This is a really cool insight about talking to people who like to use Midjourney/ChatGPT. The comparison with plastic use (and also car dependency) is great. For both of these things we know that they waste precious resources, pollute the environment and are health hazards. But even people who know this will still not let go because it's too much work. AI is not yet at this point but may soon be...

Work continues on the Dice Parser. Added a ton of features:
- Raw rolls
- Dice rerolls
- Keeping the nth lowest/highest dice
You can literally now do some craziness like "roll 10d10, reroll all rolls 3 or less, keep the two highest as fire damage, then roll 3d4, keep the lowest two values, keep those as piercing damage"
```python
dice.roll("10d10 reroll 3 keep 2[fire] 3d4 keep -2[piercing]")
"Building a personal brand" is one of those incredibly cringe sounding things that's also legitimately good advice, especially in this job market. You just have to take a very different strategy from engagement-baiting.
Write for the kind of person you'll want to work with in the future, and those people will notice you. Write low-effort slop, and your audience will be completely useless to you when you need something from them.
