In 2022 I drove across Canada from Ottawa to northern BC. I remember driving for three full days around the top of Lake Superior with a wall of mostly dead trees on either side of the road the whole way, thinking, man when Ontario burns, there's going to be no stopping it. And here we are.

I knew this day would come. The chainsaw has been going all morning. (Even though there is lightning in the area!!)
The former Alberni High School (1920-1952) and Redford Elementary School (1980s) has had a large fir tree on its property likely for that entire time… The tree is at least 80-100 years old.
It was sold a few years ago. I am not speaking ill of the First Nations developer because I actually appreciate what they have done at the property and agree with the development.
This is a failure of City policy not protecting important trees and public spaces that continue to be lost in the City. They provide shade, habitat, and public enjoyment. They are not rotten, they are not at risk of falling or blowing down in a storm.
I don’t understand why people are afraid of trees. 🌲

One of the hazards of photographing a much-photographed thing is that, after careful consideration of viewpoint, composition and framing, you take exactly the same pictures as everyone else who has carefully considered viewpoint, composition and framing.
Here are two photographs I took of the Atlas Fountain at Castle Howard, along with the two illustrations from its Wikipedia entry. Years apart in time, inches apart in space.

Last fall I got depressed driving home one day because of all the trees being ripped out along Lisbon Avenue as they rebuild it, add traffic circles, bike lanes, and other improvements.
I was excited for the bike lanes but sad for the trees. (A lot of them were pretty tall.)
Well, today I went down Lisbon and they are planting a *ton* of trees. They're maybe 5 to 7 feet tall, but it's a start.

Our power lines are all buried, but a lightning strike seems to have killed the garage door opener (that I just finished hooking up to voice control), the living room TV, a GFI electrical circuit, and most importantly, the central air conditioner.
I was looking out the front window and everything lit up bright orange-red.
I'll be out in the yard tomorrow, looking for damaged trees and streetlights. Something got the crap knocked out of it.

#teapots ! I think this might be the last of my loft pottery; these are all for sets where we've found other pieces of. Heck, we've got an entire table and a few boxes of recovered pottery from up there.

Three very decorative teapots, and some sugar bowls and jugs sit on a piece of paper. They're covered in dust. One teapot is made like a rustic farm house with the lid being thatched roof, the next has palm trees on, the third had a red top and is made to look like an old west horse wagon.

On my walk this weekend I went past this abandoned mansion, built by a Victorian stockbroker in the 1860s. You can barely see it from the track but the whole place is falling into ruin. But as I walked past, I could hear the calls of peacocks. Presumably now wild, and it made me think post apocalyptic thoughts. #ruins #walking

It started out as an exploratory bike ride in neighboring Botetourt County (locals pronounce it “bot-uh-tot”). The ride itself was a disaster of constantly getting lost in trying to connect from the Cherry Blossom Trail onto the Greenfield Trail. You have to take a few horse trails. Back in 2022, after #StormArwen, I rolled up a section of the fence around my wood so that I could haul fallen timber out of the south end of my wood. There's still a lot of fallen timber there, but I think I have hauled out as much as I practically can. So today I decided to get the fence back up.
Of course, brambles had grown through the rolled up fence, so it was far beyond my stre…

Starting the unroll. The winch line from the tractor is taken through a turning block at the farm gateway, and hooked into the roll. There's a mess of fallen timber in the foreground, which will be outside the fence once it is back up, and which is destined to become firewood. Behind, the wood is still a mess, but the young oak trees along the edge of it are just coming into leaf.
(This picture is accidentally on its side, my apologies) Starting the unroll. The rolled fence has been pulled clear of the weeds, and is unrolling under the branches of the oak trees.
The fence more or less fully unrolled along the edge of the wood. Some of the fence posts are broken and will need to be replaced.
