Content warning: a nice thing - yesterday's BiCon pre-meet

Hosted a BiCon pre-meet yesterday, online. Conveniently there were exactly 12 people there for most of it (not counting me), perfect for dividing into threes! I kept switching the groups so that people could meet different people.
We talked about how we'd each like BiCon to be, and how we could make it more likely to turn out that way.
Top tips: get enough sleep, eat enough food, and don't try to do everything!
Then we also talked about what contribution we might like to make - though I also said, just being there and being friendly and making BiCon more varied is a contribution in itself :-)
Several of the people who'd come along turned out to be already signed up to offer workshop sessions, so we heard a little bit about those.
Two tasks currently available if you want one are (a) keeping an eye on the Zoom setup for the hybrid events, (b) leafleting at Pride on Saturday, so that more people know about BiCon for Sunday. There's usually also opportunities to assist with being welcoming at reception.
In-person BiCon starts tomorrow, and runs Friday till Sunday. The venue is a couple of buildings belonging to the girls' high school, in between the Forest and the Arboretum. I tagged along for a site visit the other day and I think it's pretty good for air quality.
Apparently about 70 people have booked so far. It's also possible to buy a ticket on the day, so that might not be the final total.
As I reminded people last night, you don't have to be bi to come to BiCon! And if you _are_ bi, you don't have to be any particular amount of bi :-)

As a marketer by profession I feel this very deeply and struggle to find a way to communicate to fellow people on the left that the methods and tools for communicating messages and persuading masses of people SHOULD be used, as effectively as possible, to promote facts and values we align with.
I get that power is uncomfortable when so many parties visibly abuse it for malicious purposes.
But power in and of itself is a tools that needs to be wielded, and we should be cognizant about targeting it at changes that will improve our societies and help us and the planet.
Yes, don’t use power blindly. Don’t manipulate people. But using persuasive, effective tactics for mass communication to educate people on the truth and get them aboard initiatives that will help them??? Why is that evil?
It feels like the left sees power, influence, and thus marketing / PR / propaganda as too black-and-white. We need to be comfortable in navigating the grey. sauropods.win/@futurebird/1149

Content warning: "Golden Dome" SASS?

😆 Missile Air Defense As a Service
MAD AS you like.
In some ways a government paying by a subscription for a missile defense service has been inevitable since Reagan started the mission to Privatize Literally Everything.
The government will own nothing, and be happy.
States must do only one thing: Pay money to rich people to get them to do the things.
The idea of Reagan's Star Wars returning is pretty crazy in itself. That launching all those satellites would massively enrich the government's biggest donor is mostly just pretty typical corruption.
But having the government pay to rent it out is just amazing. 🧑‍🍳 💋
Hey, if Russia and China outbid America during the hour they were launching the missiles, that's just the free market!
Never really even know if it works without being attacked, but the rich owners get to extract the wealth from it all the same.
Rentierism? In this economy?

Let's say you find a really cool forum online that has lots of good advice on it. It's even got a very active community that's happy to answer questions very quickly, and the community seems to have a wealth of knowledge about all sorts of subjects.
You end up visiting this community often, and trusting the advice you get to answer all sorts of everyday questions you might have, which before you might have found answers to using a web search (of course web search is now full of SEI spam and other crap so it's become nearly useless).
Then one day, you ask an innocuous question about medicine, and from this community you get the full homeopathy treatment as your answer. Like, somewhat believable on the face of it, includes lots of citations to reasonable-seeming articles, except that if you know even a tiny bit about chemistry and biology (which thankfully you do), you know that the homoeopathy answers are completely bogus and horribly dangerous (since they offer non-treatments for real diseases). Your opinion of this entire forum suddenly changes. "Oh my God, if they've been homeopathy believers all this time, what other myths have they fed me as facts?"
You stop using the forum for anything, and go back to slogging through SEI crap to answer your everyday questions, because one you realize that this forum is a community that's fundamentally untrustworthy, you realize that the value of getting advice from it on any subject is negative: you knew enough to spot the dangerous homeopathy answer, but you know there might be other such myths that you don't know enough to avoid, and any community willing to go all-in on one myth has shown itself to be capable of going all in on any number of other myths.

The (alternative mix*) grass is growing in the driveway and the rock tracks are solid.
* It’s not grass at all. Mostly native clover, plus poppies and some small flowering grasses. It looks patchy but the stated goal on the bag is for about 75% coverage so that it can grow, flower, seed itself, and then fill in naturally next year. I will add a picture of our side path that we did last year. The clover has indeed filled in nicely and it is staying nice and green with minimal water. You can see it on the left in the very back of the picture. The clover is about 30cm/1ft tall and is full of blooms.

War is an unconscionable horror. The illusions of "international law" and "rules of war" have lead us to believe that war can be clean, managed, and "civilized."
But wars are fought by humans and humans are messy. Humans are not well suited to following orderly rules. Humans respond to their environment. Humans in extraordinary situations can be extraordinarily vindictive and brutal. Sufficiently traumatized humans can act without a conscience, spreading trauma like an infection. If humans respond to their situation, then there can be no "civilized" war because war is itself an situation outside of the society. It is a place that promotes antisocial behavior and punishes pro-social behavior. War cannot be expected to follow "international law" because it is what fills the void created by the failure of "international law" (so long as we rely on nations).
To call for war is to inflict atrocities on civilians. It is to kill the parents and children who serve, and to destroy the combatants who survive. It is to infect both sides with a trauma that will spread if untreated, when soldiers come home or when they become mercenaries in other wars.
And yet... there are times when the brutality, the incompetence, the evil becomes so unbearable that no other option exists, when taking up arms is simply bringing symmetry to an existing asymmetric conflict. There are times when the worst possible thing is inescapable, though it can never be justified.
In this new era of war, in the scramble of conflict under the collapsing of the (poorly named) "Pax Americana," I hope that we, the people, can understand that war is not a tool to fulfill an objective. It is not part of a larger strategy. It is not an extension of deplomacy.
War is a failure.
While it may be the only way to deal with the irrational - the genocidal, the slaver, the dictator - it is still a failure. It is a failure to build a world in which these people can't control armies and economies, can't turn populations in to cults and bend nations to their will.
And we will continue to have such wars until we unite against those who would use as as pawns, who would control our lives and lead us to our deaths. We will have these wars until we unite, as one world, against those rulers. This is what I mean, and what a lot of other people mean, when we say, "No War, but Class War."

ANIMATION INDUSTRY IN DANGER : WORLD UNIONS DECLARE EMERGENCY IN THE FACE OF GENERATIVE Al USE. Graphic with the text Let's Stop AI Generated Art.
ENGLISH VERSION

This statement was composed by a collective of international Animation Unions, federations, and organisations calling for action in regards to the usage of generative Artificial Intelligence and its destructive impact, not only on the global animation industry and the craft itself, but also on everyone who is employed by it, our culture and our planet. Windows 11 sticky notes app showing a note I just made. It captured the fact that before switching TO it, I was working in a browser window.
If I tab AWAY, unless I blow it open to its own little subwindow, the note itself closes (which I guess is reasonable). And for some reason the "+Note" and "Screenshot" buttons now appear. The addition of these buttons now shifts my list of notes down, visually disruptive.
If I tab to another application (or back to a browser as here), that "Recent notes" label changes to "Your notes from <Vivaldi icon> <name of webpage> - Vivaldi".
Which is yet ANOTHER visual disruption out of the corner of my eye.
And there's a setting called "Remember the source: Automatically capture the active window information to help you remember better." with a checkbox.

If you uncheck this box, the stupid label change remains, all that stops is where the top of your note has a snip of `Source: <what window you had open>`. The visual disruption of that label changing, and having the +Note/Screenshot buttons appear and disappear all the time is annoying AF.

We are confident this won't bother Weigelt a bit. In fact, the README file for X11Libre positively invites it, as it contains this:

> It's explicitly free of any "DEI" [diversity, equity, and inclusion] or similar discriminatory policies.

Oh dear.

That statement, though, has received praise and approval in some places.

Do (Or Don't!) Look Down... into the beautiful valley (Rappenalptal) 😍
#FootpathFriday #LandscapePhotography #Video

Short 18second, 270° video panorama of a beautiful large & deep alpine valley from around 800m above. The ground drops off steeply directly next to the narrow path (already on a slope itself). The mountains on the other side are up to ~2700m above sea level and ~1600m above the valley floor with green & rocky slopes, forest in the lower sections. A small road is leading along the last houses towards the end of the valley (the border pass is briefly visible between 12-14 seconds). Semi-cloudy bl…

Fictional depiction of mild self-harm, blood.
#WritersCoffeeClub July 23: Share a description you're proud of.
I've been writing a vampire novel lately. Here's a description from the scene when the vampire character proves to the human protagonist that he's been telling the truth:

"It's okay, Ada," he gave me a reassuring close-mouthed smile. "Just watch."
He slashed across his wrist in a motion that made the matching scars on my left arm hum. I covered them with my right hand, as if to calm my skin that I wasn't hurting it like that anymore. That we were merely watching someone else.
The cut on Theodore's arm turned red and angry, as expected. And then, just before the wound pooled up enough to bleed, it closed. I watched time run backwards as it disappeared, the skin stitching itself together to leave no trace of the violence imposed on it by the blade.
"What?" I walked up to him as he handed his wrist to me for inspection. I ran the tips of my fingers over the spot where the cut was mere moments before - but Theodore's skin, cold as always, was smooth and unharmed.
