So I grew up somewhere never needing an ID for anything, other than a driving license when I was very occasionally driving a car. I wasn’t carrying an ID every day until I was in my 30s.
It’s a relatively new thing that travel, buying certain things, alcohol consumption etc requires a photo ID.
All of this surveillance and privacy-invasive shit (make people carry around the address where they live, wtf?) has been pressed into existence to “protect the children” and in the name of “fighting criminals”.
It’s all bullshit and we should end requiring it.

When Miami Beach activist
Donna Nevel was leafleting for Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) last year at one of the biggest art fairs in the country,
she was shocked to see a billboard-bearing truck emblazoned with her name and photo, along with the words “Jew hater.”
Now, JVP is alleging that Miami Beach City Commissioner David Suarez spent $4,000 of his own money on three billboard trucks to target Nevel and another outspoken JVP member as well as the local chapter of the organi…

Marie Hurabiell is a transphobe, xenophobe, and racist, but the silver lining of her running for Congress is that it got the Standard to publish this flyer.
Activists handed this out at a protest outside her org's gala, highlighting both Hurabiell's bigoted comments and her ties to Mayor Denim Dan Lurie. More people should know!

If you are a filter feeder how to you deal with a gummed up feeding mechanism? Cladoceran zooplankton have a post abdominal claw with a sharp pointed tip which acts as a combination toothpick and anchor to clear out the feeding groove of the carapace. Some groups also grasp algal filaments or plants with it. These claws are distinctive to species based on the si…

In the previous post, I described the Seasons project: a #timelapse of hundreds of pictures taken from nearly the same viewpoint over the years. The hardest challenge wasn’t taking the pictures or assembling them, but aligning them.
I’m a human being, not a tripod. The position changes ever so slightly, and so does the exact angle.
Alignment is the process of warping each photo so it…

I've been reading about Eddie Henderson. Best known from Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi band (1970-73), he's played trumpet and flugelhorn with seemingly everyone (Pharoah Sanders, Norman Connors, Elvin Jones, Johnny Griffin, McCoy Tyner, Joe Henderson, Kenny Barron, Joe Chambers, Max Roach, Jackie McClean, Dexter Gordon, Roy Haynes, etc), and he's still performing. He's also a physician (!) who has practiced general medicine and psychiatry. He did his residency while he w…
I've just released my second solo album in my Transits of Mars electronic music project.
The second album from Transits of Mars brings together eight instrumental tracks inspired by the theme of the digital humanities. Shimmering arpeggios, ethereal synths, pulsing basses and dynamic beats combine into a digital texture that is up-to-date but recalls the rich history of electronic music since the 1970s.
Enjoy!
Today involved tree pruning in the morning (photo below, dog for scale), followed by drive up to Carrickfergus in the Land Rover (missus in the BMW) to start clearing out my late father in law's workshop. After 8 years, my mother-in-law finally decided it was time.

I feel like I am missing my SLA to turn around portraits so it is a guilty pleasure to share a #sliceoflife of which I will say two things: (1) I told the clerk at the 7-11 that "I didn't know she was still around" and (2) the photo is above the dignity of the object because I took it with a huge lens

We were on a wee cycling loop. At one spot I had some disagreement with a larger root in the the way. During the short discussion, the click pedal took sides of the root and intervened in the discussion.

Take care!

My Nakamichi tape deck died, and so I got a replacement belt and idler wheel tire for it. That didn't fix it. Internet searches suggested that corrosion in the cam motor was the most likely culprit.
Today I took it apart, opened up the cam motor, used a wire brush Dremel attachment and some Deoxit, and got it cleaned up. Put it all back together and it actually works! It was a frustrating process, with lots of tiny little parts, but gosh it's nice to have a functioning ta…
