A Canadian inventor gave Mothers across North America a device that was beneficial and a little scary. We are, of course, talking about the Jolly Jumper, once referred to as "the Canadian Nanny" on a 1957 CBC broadcast. Susan Olivia Poole (1889–1975) was an Indigenous Canadian inventor who created the Jolly Jumper in 1910, but it was not until 1948 that they were produced for the retail market, and patented in 1957. They continue to be manufactured in Ontario by the company that purchased the rights in 1960.

Eyes open my kind, Canadian, anti-fascist friends. The forces of hate are organizing and training in plain sight because they have been emboldened by opportunistic and ignorant conservative politicians who see power as the only goal.

I have one final chapter for The Dirt on Canadian Farming, and it's more of an opinion piece.
As I conducted research on each province for information on their agriculture, there were numerous news stories about how farmers and farm organizations were fighting against loss of farmland. Urban growth, new housing development, and sprawling industrial parks are gobbling up prime farmland. The attached article is just one example. The statistics released by each province have common trends:the average age of farmers increasing, individual farm operators in decline, larger farms are increasing, renting of farmland is growing, and overall arable land is in decline. With the sparsely populated prairies holding the majority of fertile farmland, Canada likely won't lose our global impact because of development for houses or industry. But elsewhere, our food chain will be pushed further away from where we live. Or disappear.

Listening to CBC Radio Barrie this morning and they were interviewing the manager responsible for housing starts for the Town of Innisfil. The discussion was about missed targets for housing starts and what can be done to get back on track. You could tell that he was frustrated, but the reason for less homes being built was almost solely put on the downturn in the housing market. No one is buying, so private industry isn't building.
All levels of government are throwing money at the problem, with most of it incentivizing for-profit companies to put shovels in the ground. At some point, the Federal, Provincial, and Municipal governments have to realize that public housing, government leasehold development, co-operative housing, or subsidized family apartments must be considered to solve the housing shortage. Private industry will never have the same objectives of getting families into homes - without a calculation of significant profits first.

- 41.3% of Canadian farmland is rented.
- From 1971 to 2021, the farm population declined by 62.2%, from 1 in 14 Canadians to 1 in 61.
- Farm debt has more than doubled in the last 20 years, from $43B in 2002 to $138.8B in 2022. That is currently 10x the size of net farm income.
- In 2021, 96,043 tonnes of pesticides were sold for agricultural use – more than three times the amount sold in 1991.

Today, while doing my morning Google thingy, I learned that Elon Musk has Canadian Citizenship. Now I need a shower.
Canada is pretty picky when we look for individuals who should be Canadian. Only 6 non-citizens have ever been recognized as Honorary Canadians, which takes an Act of Parliament to be designated with the honour. It provides zero rights or privileges but looks good on your resume. It is far more likely that non-citizens could be awarded the Order of Canada as they are eligible if they have made a significant contribution to Canadian society or had a positive impact on the world at large. As of August 2025, 8,647 people have been appointed to the order, an average of 150 per year since the honour was established in 1967. There is no list of non-Canadian recipients, as the government doesn't track them separately, but Queen Elizabeth II was awarded her Sovereign badge in 1970.

Interesting and fulsome interview on exactly how NORAD reacted to the plane hijacking in Victoria/Vancouver on Tuesday. They speak to the commander of NORAD, currently a Canadian.
I appreciated the last section most though:
“It's the only bi-national command in the world; it's been a strong bi-national command since 1958, and nothing has changed.
We don't ever talk politics at work. It's not something that we do, nor does it affect what we do.
I would say that we are as tight, and probably tighter than we've ever been. As the world around us gets to be more dangerous, I would say that NORAD is even closer than it's ever been.
But one last thing — we have the watch. That's the slogan here for NORAD.
To give you a great example, all of the assessors, we all live on-base in homes that actually have a safe, we call it the SCIF. It's basically a classified room that has all of our systems. The days that you're on duty, you're either at work or in your house. Because the timelines are so small for answering the phone, you don't walk the dog; you don't do all these other things, and someone covers for you when you're going between work and home.
That's how important this mission is to us down here. It's really important for everybody in Canada to know that at NORAD, we have the watch”

In August 1998, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that Quebec could not legally secede from Canada unilaterally. The court's decision affirmed that any secession would require a constitutional amendment negotiated with the federal government and other provinces. This ruling stemmed from a reference case initiated by the federal government following a close referendum on Quebec sovereignty in 1995. Although Quebec was represented at the Supreme Supreme Court hearing, they did not participate in presenting arguments. They essentially ignored the ruling and planned a future referendum, which never happened.
This ruling established an important precedent that Alberta separatists should pay attention to. But details such as this ruling, aboriginal rights, or common sense seem to escape their attention spans.

OK... maybe icebergs aren't frightening, unless you sail into one, and all those abandoned towns were the result of government resettlement programs in the 60s. But.... boo. One of the largest communities to be resettled was Merasheen, whose name supposedly means "Ocean of Seadogs." How scary is that. In yesterday's post about farming and fall fairs, I ruminated about a series on Canada’s agricultural areas. OK, ruminated may be the term as it was more of a random thought, like a retriever seeing a squirrel. But over the next 2-ish weeks, I'll try to highlight the significant crop regions in each province and teach myself more about our great country.
The first post should be easy because I'm sure most Canadians don't think a lot of farming happens in the Yukon, Northwest Territories, or Nunavut. But small areas within each can sustain crops in a short season, mostly potatoes, and commercial warehouse growing operations are being funded and encouraged. With a warming climate, more land is being used to farm, and additional types of crops are being tested.

Glad this did not turn into a Waco situation. In fact, it doesn't look like it was even close to that. But Didulo is obviously completely off her rocker and knows how to manipulate people for money and influence in whatever scheme she dreams up.
I'm glad she's essentially the face of the Sovereign Citizen movement... making it clear it’s not a place for responsible people.

While Venezuela is not a democratic example like Ukraine, the echoes of Russia's invasion of Ukraine as Trump moves US military assets toward the Venezuelan coast are certainly there.
"Maduro spoke to the Venezuelan people on Monday, asking them to prepare for an invasion.
"In the face of this maximum military pressure, we have declared maximum preparedness for the defence of Venezuela," Maduro said of the deployment, which he characterized as "an extravagant, unjustifiable, immoral and absolutely criminal and bloody threat."
He deployed troops along the coast and at the border with Colombia. He also urged Venezuelans to enlist in a civilian militia.”

It's 1866, and there's no TV or interweb, so what do you do? We'll, if you live on a dairy farm near Ingersoll Ontario, you make a 7,000-pound wheel of cheese. It's helpful if you are also not lactose intolerant.

I know you have been crossing days off on your calendar, and you're excited, but there is still 1 more sleep until #BeaverWeek. To get you through one more day, we have some alternative critter content - the Richardson Ground Squirrel. Commonly called "gophers" or "prairie dogs" across Canada’s prairie provinces, they should not be confused with the Black-tailed Prairie Dog that is rare in Canada. They are generally disliked (putting it mildly) by farmers but tolerated in more urban areas. Hey, they may not be beavers, but we should show them some love because they're cute.

The Beaver is the only mammal, besides humans, that is able to re-engineer their environment to support their lifestyle. Humans can use this Beaver superpower for good, rebuilding #Watersheds and increasing storage of water to combat drought and wildfires. Provinces are reintroduc8ng Beavers to their historical habitats, and even moving pairs of Beavers to desert regions in the U.S. to totally transform landscapes.

The Carney government's suspension of the EV mandate has nothing to do with “pragmatism” or “moderation” as I heard an interviewee say on the CBC this morning.
It's about the Ontario car industry realizing they don't make EVs or even Hybrids that can compete with Korea, Japan, or Europe (let alone China).
People want them. BC is at 20% new (the mandated level), Quebec is at 30%. Those are the #2 and #3 most populous provinces in Canada btw.
It's politics, and... specifically with Carney, cowardice, nothing else. BC’s Energy Minister Adrian Dix called it out
“I want to say this: Their target for this year, we achieved four years ago,” Dix said of the existing federal electric vehicle mandates. “The issue here in Canada -- and I think the federal government needs to engage in this a little bit -- is first and foremost with Ontario.”

Today, we celebrate the #FallEquinox, not to be confused with the Chevy Equinox, which is an entirely different thing. The Fall Equinox means summer is officially over, and some of you missed 3 weeks of nice weather when you gave up back on Labour Day. Right now, day and night are roughly equal, more or less, across Canada, but our days are getting shorter for the next several months, until December 21st-ish. Start thinking about snow tires and Christmas shopping because the calendar moves quickly this time of year. If you're in the Southern Hemisphere, please ignore this message.
Some bonus content - your Fall 2025 #Horoscope. It's from the CBC, our national news service, so you know it must be accurate. I read mine (Virgo) several times and haven't got a clue what it means. So I've got that going for me.

Brutal, the CFL is essentially going to take everything about the game that is unique to Canada (larger field, goal posts, points) and scrap it so it looks more like the NFL.
Why? well just because apparently…

Nothing more to be said here…
“An inmate who has pleaded guilty to murdering Robert Pickton in prison last year says he did it for the serial killer's victims.
Martin Charest admitted on Thursday morning to fatally assaulting Pickton with a broken broom handle at the Port-Cartier federal penitentiary in May 2024.
Charest pleaded guilty to first-degree murder during a court appearance in Sept-Îles, Que., northeast of Quebec City.
Pickton was convicted in 2007 of six counts of second-degree murder, but confessed to killing a total of 49 women whom he lured to his pig farm near Vancouver.
A statement of facts read out in court detailed how Charest locked himself into a room with Pickton and assaulted him twice while guards were unable to enter.
Charest told the judge he murdered Pickton after the serial killer had continued to brag about the murders and told other inmates he'd commit more crimes if he was ever released.”

Fascinating that BC's population dropped marginally (2154 people) last quarter ... but it still had the second highest inter-provincial migration of any province!
If we're anything like Alberta, then it's a good bet the biggest source of decline was in temporary international residents.
