Cleaning out books at my dad's place: I feel that the Women's Weekly R&D kitchens were stretching to make the page count for its "Dinner Party Cookbook No. 2". At least judging by this recipe for "plum sauce made mostly from store bought plum sauce (plus some filler)". Then you accompany this with those fluorescent red cocktail franks that are emulsified pork sphincter stuffed into what looks like ragged modelling balloons.

The cover of The Australian Women's Weekly Dinner Party Cookbook No. 2. Subtitled "New, exciting menus for all seasons".

The cover photo seems to show in the background a fruit trifle, a carafe of red wine and a whole orange duck in the foreground.
The recipe photo with an overlayed angled red strap on the top right saying "To serve with drinks/PARTY SAVORIES".

There is a ramekin with cocktail franks in the center of frame and presumably a gravy boat with the plum sauce running off the lower-left corner of the frame.
The recipe text:

COCKTAIL FRANKFURTS
WITH PLUM SAUCE

500g (1lb) cocktail frankfurts
¼, cup bottled plum sauce
¾, cup water
1 teaspoon chilli sauce
2 teaspoons tomato sauce
2 teaspoons soy sauce
2 teaspoons cornflour

Place plum sauce, water, chilli sauce,
tomato sauce, soy sauce and corn-
flour into a small saucepan, stir over
medium heat until sauce boils. Cook
frankfurts in boiling water until
tender, drain. Serve sauce separately
for dipping. Makes about 20.

Abstract: One of the main challenges in galaxy formation that has emerged recently is the early assembly of massive galaxies. The observed number density and the maximum stellar mass ($M_{\star}$) of massive galaxies in the early Universe appear to be higher than model predictions, which may pose a serious problem to the LCDM cosmology. A major limitation in many previous studies is the large uncertainty in estimating $M_{\star}$ due to the lack of constraints in the rest-frame near-infrared part of the spectral energy distribution, which is critical to determining $M_{\star}$ accurately. Here we use data from a large JWST/MIRI survey in the PRIMER program to carry out a systematic analysis of massive galaxies at $z \sim 3-8$, leveraging photometric constraints at rest-frame $\gtrsim 1 \mu$m. We find a significant reduction in the number and mass densities of massive galaxies at $z > 5$ compared to earlier results that did not use the MIRI photometry. Within the standard $\Lambda$CDM cosmology, our results require a moderate increase in the baryon-to-star conversion efficiency ($\epsilon$) towards higher redshifts and higher $M_{\star}$. For the most massive galaxies at $z\sim 8$, the required $\epsilon$ is $\sim 0.3$, in comparison to $\epsilon \sim 0.14$ for typical low-redshift galaxies. Our findings are consistent with models assuming suppressed stellar feedback due to the high gas density and the associated short free-fall time expected for massive halos at high redshift.

Joint Reference Frame Synthesis and Post Filter Enhancement for Versatile Video Coding

Abstract: This paper presents the joint reference frame synthesis (RFS) and post-processing filter enhancement (PFE) for Versatile Video Coding (VVC), aiming to explore the combination of different neural network-based video coding (NNVC) tools to better utilize the hierarchical bi-directional coding structure of VVC. Both RFS and PFE utilize the Space-Time Enhancement Network (STENet), which receives two input frames with artifacts and produces two enhanced frames with suppressed artifacts, along with an intermediate synthesized frame. STENet comprises two pipelines, the synthesis pipeline and the enhancement pipeline, tailored for different purposes. During RFS, two reconstructed frames are sent into STENet's synthesis pipeline to synthesize a virtual reference frame, similar to the current to-be-coded frame. The synthesized frame serves as an additional reference frame inserted into the reference picture list (RPL). During PFE, two reconstructed frames are fed into STENet's enhancement pipeline to alleviate their artifacts and distortions, resulting in enhanced frames with reduced artifacts and distortions. To reduce inference complexity, we propose joint inference of RFS and PFE (JISE), achieved through a single execution of STENet. Integrated into the VVC reference software VTM-15.0, RFS, PFE, and JISE are coordinated within a novel Space-Time Enhancement Window (STEW) under Random Access (RA) configuration. The proposed method could achieve -7.34%/-17.21%/-16.65% PSNR-based BD-rate on average for three components under RA configuration.

How does the pointer magically move by 18 bytes when passed as a function argument??? Obviously the data I read in StoreStringObjectIfNecessary() is wrong, it's not reading from the address I passed!

Abstract: We present rest-frame optical data of the z~4 sub-millimeter galaxy GN20 obtained with JWST/NIRSpec in integral field spectroscopy (IFS) mode. The H$\alpha$ emission is asymmetric and clumpy and extends over a projected distance of more than 15 kpc. To first order, the large-scale ionised gas kinematics are consistent with a turbulent ($\sigma\sim90$ km/s), rotating disc ($v_{\rm rot}\sim500$ km/s), congruent with previous studies of its molecular and ionised gas kinematics. However, we also find clear evidence for non-circular motions in the H$\alpha$ kinematics. We discuss their possible connection with various scenarios, such as external perturbations, accretion or radial flows. In the centre of GN20, we find broad line emission (FWHM $\sim1000-2000$ km/s) in the H$\alpha$ [N II] complex, suggestive of fast, AGN-driven winds or, alternatively, of the broad-line region of an active black hole. Elevated values of [N II]$\lambda6583$/H$\alpha>0.4$ and EW(H$\alpha)>6$ \r{A}, throughout large parts of GN20 suggest that feedback from the active black hole is able to photo-ionise the interstellar medium. Our data corroborates that GN20 offers a unique opportunity to observe key processes in the evolution of the most massive present-day galaxies acting in concert, over 12 billion years ago.

Had a wonderful #cycling loop with some unplanned detours and some wind. But nothing that would mitigate the fun.
I just need to somehow fix my GPS on the handlebar again.
Close to 37km pure joy and lots of nice people. I usually ring the bell 10-20m ahead so that they hear that I'm still far away and can move away in a comfortable speed. When passing, I shout a quick "thanks…

It's funny cause it hits the right targets (Big Tech) but the way that GDPR has become mostly a lever to do a replacement-punishment is kinda weird.
Sure, you now have a stick to beat MetaMicrosoftGoogle's money bags with but is it really about privacy? About an affirmative use that's based on an actual vision for how privacy in connected societies should work? Or is it just "I can't get you for what I feel you do wrong so I'll try to frame it as a privacy issu…

First time plastic welding since shop class at RPI in like 2011.
Definitely not my prettiest work but it looks like it'll hold, and should be way better than the epoxy I used before (this is polypropylene so annoyingly low surface energy for adhesives).

Yellow plastic axle from a toy with black filler material around a crack
Cheap hot air rework station on the floor next to a plastic axle in a clamp
Inside of the shopping cart frame showing a couple of not-that-pretty weld beads
Outside of the cart showing more ugly weld beads

Good morning from Harlem
#Photography #GoodMorning #Sunrise #NYC

Looking through an arched window two hours after sunrise the sky is full of dense gray-blue clouds with an avalanche of smaller clouds tumbling in on the lower left. The sun is well above the buildings on the left, creating a dramatic red and blue lens flare. Pointed roofs of Harlem brownstones are silhouetted across the street, and a taller apartment building can be seen in the distance. The green leaves of trees are entering frame on the bottom left and right.

A Brompton folding bicycle in the dark leaning on some door frame, visible from the side. The frame's main tube, some of the spokes, a small part of the saddle pouch and a line on a frame bag are reflecting light from the view point.

Additionally two very bright battery lights are on: A vertical, very bright white one on the handlebar, and a red, less visible one lighting up a fence post near the rear of the bicycle.

During our morning walk I saw this Melolontha (Maikäfer) on the street.
I took him up and brought it to the next patch of grass.
It's the second one I see this year. It's causes a bit mixed feelings. I'm happy that I find them and watch them closely.
But it also makes me sad because when I was a child, I saw them ways more often.
