no one is home so i'm cranking it up and ... uh oh ... that sounds BAD. do i need new speakers? sob! i've had these fishers since 1986. I don't think they were anything special back then, but they have grown on me. and oh no, new speakers are expensive. 😭
oh wait the balance settings all screwed up here ⚙️ just a sec 🛠️ and 🔊 ok everything is fine. phew.
my stereo is ok — just ok — but i don't care because all i do is play scratchy old LPs anyway.
I tend to post about the downsides of AI.
Here are two articles by people I highly respect which show a very positive point of view related to #AI:

Some of our internal builds have been building with Xcode 26 betas since WWDC, but yesterday evening I went ahead and switched over everything else that isn't on a release branch, so we now have 50 targets building with beta 4.
The most common build issue we've run into in our code is declaring the size of a C array using `const int`, which we now declare as an `enum` as a stronger compile-time guarantee of its constant value:
- const int OFXMLIDLength = 11;
enum {…

This is very good from Mike Masnick, although I’d prefer a different headline. Like, it’s not in your self-interest as a tech person to embrace fascism. One of many choice quotes:
“So here’s your choice: you can embrace the chaotic, messy, sometimes frustrating democratic system that has produced more innovation than any other system in human history. Or you can bet your company’s future on a dictator who eagerly promises to make everything simple and efficient mainly by ignoring the nu…

Okay, time to continue bashing. Perhaps this one project is just that bad, but Conan sounds like a complete antithesis of what a package manager is all about.
Well, this package insists to build its dependencies via Conan. Except it insists on really old versions that don't work with my glibc. So I need to start swapping dependencies.
Except it turns out Conan doesn't care much about resolving dependencies. So I actually need to start adjust versions of the dependencies of packages that it wants to build. And then it starts rebuilding other stuff and again everything fails because of incompatible versions.
And when I finally manage to find a working set, the actual project fails over protobuf version. After a long WTF-ing, I finally realize that it's complaining, because it somehow managed to mix the version of protobuf built by Conan and the external protobuf installed by Conda.
So yeah, great job. A package manager that doesn't really resolve dependencies but instead forces a dependency hell on you, and on top of that ends up mixing system packages with its own packages.

Rayons is such a great musician. As I am reading a novel and listening to the soundtrack of the anime adaptation, I am getting murdered by feels. She nailed the soundtrack, she nailed the mood of the novels, everything is perfect. I know that wishing for more recognition for her is a bit off-tone given that she did the new era of Japan ceremony music too, but I feel like she deserves more public eye

I made some progress on the Beat Bike!
The magnet mounted on the wheel passes a reed switch which is sensed by the control box (with a Raspberry Pi Pico) and then triggers the drum machine to step through the programmed sequence.
Still a lot of work to do, mostly mounting everything onto the bike, and some more code to write, but the proof of concept is all good.

Debian in 2025 is really relaxing. When I think back with horror to how I struggled with Debian in 1999 after switching from the well-functioning Red Hat Linux to Debian to get all my hardware to work halfway, and how easily everything works out of the box today without much fiddling, even with Debian Stable - a remarkable advance. 😎

This is a very good article regardless, but it makes a point widely ignored in the age of GenAI:
"While our results point to real growth in students’ intellectual abilities and dispositions, they do not capture everything philosophers mean by “intellectual virtue.” Intellectual virtue is not just a matter of possessing certain abilities but of using those abilities well: at the right times, for the right reasons, and in the right ways.

We learned how to search instead of memorizing everything. And it’s the same with AI today - there’s no need to know everything by heart when AI can handle that for us.
AI is here to stay, and even if it evolves or gets replaced by something better, the transformation never stops. It’s perfectly fine to not have all the answers in your head because we can focus on more important things.

A predictable scenario tomorrow is that Trump will repeat Putin’s “offer” which is unacceptable for Ukraine as everybody knows beforehand, but what is then the next step? Diplomats from the EU are no doubt frantically preparing next steps. The worst thing that can happen is that Trump starts distancing himself from Ukraine and Europe with regard to this war. That is simply too early, Europe is not ready for that, it will be interesting to see how everything develops…

Survived a week long ‘holiday’ with the blended family. The chaos completely drained me. Got back late Saturday night and was wiped out yesterday so didn’t get around to unpacking. Now I’m wiped out on Monday morning with the house turned upside down with holiday stuff, sat at my desk trying to work. Except I can’t work because the house is a shit tip. I need to get everything back in order to enable my brain to function. So I’ll creep away from my desk and get it sorted.

There’s no excuse for not having protected backups of everything critical. That was true 30 years ago, it is true today. Back then a bigger piece of the risk was hardware, less malware. Today it is unlikely for a disk failure to take your data because we all learned that RAID was worthwhile. But RAID is not a backup and backups today need to be resistant to intentional malicious deletion.
If the US starts participating in striking Iran the danger for further escalation is great. Because why would Iran in that case not attack oil fields, US bases in the Gulf states? Close the strait of Hormuz? It could then also try to unite everything that is extreme/radical in the muslim world against the US. What is missing is a scenario for de-escalation, also because Netanyahu is not interested in that is my impression.

I feel like computers are getting more like cars, or... how I view cars.
I do not need/want to spend a ton of money to get everything computerized car with ever sensor and camera and screen there is because I just don't think I need it or it's worth it for how much I drive.
I get that some people want that, and should probably have it, but I've got like 35 years of driving experience and I think I do okay.

Hiroshi Mori's Saikawa&Moe series is so funny because both characters somewhat know what the other feels but the older guy is like "nope, I will play ignorant until the day I die, and I'll smoke as much as possible so that cannot be in a long time" and the younger girl is all "welp, I will be spiteful and jealous and I will definitely do everything in my power to tease you because I know of your weakness against watermelons"

Some thoughts:
- While the "mini" part of minirack might be debatable for this build, the footprint of my Proxmox cluster has become miniscule when compared to the size of three full-sized ATX builds.
- The Minisforum MS-A2s are very warm bois. Keeping the cables clear from behind the server nodes will pay off tons later as the hot air is unobstructed.
- Putting those massive power bricks into the bottom of the minirack is not going to work. I'm not sure exactl…

I feel like people have forgotten what "analog" means. They're living in an analog — digital dichotomy, where everything that's electrical is "digital", and everything else is "analog", entirely ignoring the whole lot of analog electronic devices, or rather dumping them all in the category of "digital".
Perhaps we're lacking a good term for all the non-electrical devices.

With regard to Ukraine the next step is very simple. Russia must stop attacking and advancing in Ukraine.
After that talks can start and other things are possible. The fact that Russia doesn't want to start with a cease-fire tells you everything you need to know. Putin can't live with a strong, prosperous and succesful Ukraine.

Did a quick test fit of one of the Minisforum MS-A2s and ran some of the cabling. I think this should turn out pretty clean and everything fits better than expected which is a good thing. The PSUs will go in the bottom 2U "compartment" without issue which I didn't run.

As Merz said it is all very simple, everything starts with a cease-fire for some time along current frontlines, Ukraine would support that. For Putin it is not attractive, if the war stops, problems at home for him will begin and Ukraine will quickly improve economically, with support of the EU.

AV1 might take a ton of time to encode, but the results are awesome. I do need to take a look at the VMs though as I'm seeing a ~33% increase in encode times when compared to the previous nodes I was using. Either way, the minirack is still quiet and taking everything that's been thrown its way.
