My plans to hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing were derailed by two days of rain and high winds, so we made a plan B: the Tama lakes track, which has somewhat less exposure but still gets up over 1400m. We’re lucky we didn’t try Tongariro given how tough the conditions were at Tama lakes – driving snow and winds on the ridge. But we were rewarded with good views and improving weather on the return trip. #hiking

Good morning! First snow around, a day of workshop ahead, #commuting by train again.
Yesterday I had to go by car - I admit that I found it quite annoying to be forced to concentrate on the traffic. But I also attended a #meetup which brought a good insight.

Cold front arrives late tonight and the wind was certainly keen to hasten its arrival. Spitting rain at times, but happily any serious downpour never arrived.
Ran a quiet, pensive 7.5 km on the HS track. Heart ❤️ and lungs 🫁 felt great, but legs 🦵 were less willing. In all, the 4/1 run/walk intervals are helping. I look forward to being further along, but in the interim I can feel progress.
7.51 km in 59:30 for an average pace of 7:55/km.

The exported statistics from my run: 604 active calories burned and a distance of 7.51 kilometers.

After a coworker told someone to just deactivate IPv6 ("it only makes problems, noone needs that, it should be scrubbed completely"), we got into a heated discussion over a distance of several desks and space dividers.
Coworkers without IT-background pulled up chairs, brought snacks 🍿 , played Godzilla sounds from their phones.
They probably didn't understand most of the technical terms we shouted at each other, but they liked to watch.

A manhattan street corner at night. It's fairly dark (what's up w/ the lack of lights??), but along the border of the sidewalk are some metal bollards that are rectangles on one side, and 5 sides on the other (one sloped side that you can lean on) on the other. They're spaced about 3ft apart, and they're probably 15" wide. One bollard basically divides the sidewalk in half.

Another angle of the bollards, this time taken FROM the street corner towards the end of the block. The bollards extend the entire length of the block, at least 30 metal bollards visible but you can't really see how many more go down due to distance and people walking on the sidewalk. The vertical side of the bollards face out towards the street, and then 45deg angled side faces towards the building.

Another shot taken from the street corner, this time facing the street and crosswalk. One bollard sits in the middle of the curb ramp top landing, which is absolutely an ADA violation. The ramp tactile mat also faces out towards the middle of the intersection rather than facing the crosswalks, but again - fuck disabled people, amirite?

But at least the bollards are nice!

For several reasons I didn't do mountains this weekend. But I enjoyed a nice cozy loop in the vicinity to the #kirchsee.
At this spot I made a quick stop and thought: #silentsunday! Not even wind. Just a lake, view, mountains in the distance and me and my bike.

After a consideration of time spent in each HR zone over previous runs, it was clear that I was overdoing the pace, even with 4/1 min run/walk intervals. I ~could~ do that pace, but I ~should~ dial it back a bit & build fitness. Anaerobic all the time wasn’t helping.
Cold tonight, just below freezing and 25 mph (40 kph) winds gusting to 50 mph (80.5 kph).

New Banksy dropped in London.

This video essay about the look of Sinners (which was shot on 70mm IMAX and Ultra Panavision) brought up something I hadn't realised until now: the large format gives you a wide field of view with the look of a telephoto lens! What that means is that you get shallow depth of field like in closeup shots with the framing of a wider angle lens.
Personal observation: there's also very little barrel lens distortion that usually comes with wide shots on 35mm.

I don't post my runs very often, but this one was pretty nice. 20k on the Vliehors, the largest sand plain in Europe. I was a little late, so I spent most of the time running in the sunset.

Irked because my watch showed 7.5 km (not that I was looking at it desperately or anything…) 😉
An afternoon meeting prevented my running in daylight on the greenway, so I headed over to one of the high schools to use their track. (My favorite track at the middle school is still all torn apart for some sort of culvert work. 😤)
One end is all pine trees and the fragrant smell each lap was lovely.
4/1 minute run/walk intervals for 7.46 km in 57:43, average pace of 7:44/km.

It wasn’t the best day for photos with lots of low cloud but it was really lovely out on the Bogong High Plains today. Spotted a nankeen kestrel and a gang gang cockatoo. A handful of hikers and 3 other runners out there, otherwise had the place to myself. #trailrunning #bogonghighplains

I managed to get out and I can confirm snow and ice on forest roads.

Cold and windy, but my gluttony over the holidays has insulated me well. I would trade some of it for fitness, which I suppose is what’s happening, albeit much slower and more arduously than I might like.
Ran 4/1 minute run/walk intervals for what turned out to be 6.5 km. Pace was 8:03/km.

Obviously it was quite foggy and cold!
On location I was already pretty sure that these would be monochromes. but I struggled to really see motives at first. Luckily I went there just to take photos, not hiking.

I saw this when I was walking back from a location scouting. When I was back at the car, I turned around - already ready to drive away when I noticed this gnarly tree in the field.
The fog was just light enough to create an interesting mood I think.
