Dinner at last. Cut down two large dead trees today as they were at risk falling uncontrollable. Was a bit of effort to lower a fence and make sure they fall into the intended direction. Lots of ropes, pulleys and chainsaws involved. #Uckermark

A while ago the media reported that most of the long-distance "suburban" trains between #Wrocław and #Poznań will be discontinued, and instead one will have to change trains midway. Irrespective of whether it's actually going to happen, let's consider it.
As you can probably tell by now, I'm not a stranger to changing trains. In fact, there are some direct connections that I do criticize. For example:
• Poznań — Szczecin — Świnoujście, where arriving at Szczecin Główny and turning back to leave the city is a waste of time. It's better to change trains at Szczecin Dąbie.
• Poznań — Krzyż — Kostrzyn, where instead of using a single railbus, you can use a larger EMU for the Poznań — Krzyż segment, and a smaller DMU for Krzyż — Kostrzyn (in fact, only recently the "direct" Poznań — Kostrzyn train involved just that, but it was supposed to be temporary).
However, good matches are the key. Say:
1. Max 10 minutes (when there are no delays) from one train to the other.
2. "Door-to-door" transfer — without having to carry all your luggage across platforms.
3. Reliable connection — if one train is delayed, the other train waits for it (or there are so many alternatives that it doesn't have to).
Can such a thing happen on Poznań — Wrocław route? I have my doubts.
I've been using these trains for years, and I can say this: there is no effort to match train from/to Poznań with other trains in Wrocław. Sometimes the trains depart 10 minutes before the first train from Poznań arrives, sometimes I need to transfer in 10 minutes, and sometimes I have to wait over an hour. And the same in the other direction.
Perhaps things would actually improve if the route is split. Perhaps people would actually care. Maybe even the trains would be fitted better to the timetable in Wrocław. But I find it hard to believe.
EDIT: One final thought — since there is no real reason to split these connections (except for profiteering), why make travellers' lives harder?

I was thinking on a dog walk about how most games with procedurally generated content like Minecraft get pretty repetitive at some point if you zoom out far enough, and large-scale structures that have structural constraints like rivers are very hard to generate piecemeal. So I wanted to come up with an algorithm that could generate globally-consistent structures piece-by-piece, with consistency even if pieces were generated out-of-order, while maintaining only a fixed amount of context no matter how far from the origin you went. This demo is *almost* that, except the amount of context scales logarithmically with the distance-from-origin, which I find a very acceptable compromise. In the demo, there's a single infinitely-long path that eventually touches every cell of the infinite 2D grid (okay, computer limitations mean it's not really infinite, but mathematically it could be). You can get different path structures from different random seeds, although the generation trick does constrain things a lot relative to the set of all possible such paths (notice that in each 5x5 region it touches every cell before leaving; that's not in general necessary).

Back from a very nice MTB ride with my wife.

I replaced my ancient phone with a Fairphone 5 and decided to do the ultimate comparison test: how accurate is the GPS when I'm riding my bike? Answer: on a map the tracks are v close but the F5 is consistently better, fewer wobbles. Errors in location mean errors in distance mean errors in speed: this image shows the new speed readings are much more steady. (NB: all speeds above 25 km/h are downhill.)

Well, the good news is that it’s over. Run/walk staying in HR zone 2 and I think I was walking more than running. My fitness is 💩 right now. The humidity about killed me, even at 0730. I should have gone out earlier.
I’m at my in-laws place in Tennessee for the holiday weekend, of which this beautiful neighborhood has so few mature trees. As such, the sun gleefully poured out its angry menace upon me the entire time and I suffered. I am meant for cold weather.
